The modern taxation system is America is one that is never far from criticism. Forclassical liberal economists, the modern government policies on taxation are oneof the key causes of the economic downturn the country has seen over the pastten years. The increasing of tax brackets usually effects the hardest workingAmericans, and is is they who who suffer financially in the long run. For thinkerslike Rick Kelo, it is their duty to educate the population on the unjust tax laws thatare in place today with informative and persuasive articles, that can leave thecitizens more informed than before.

For Richard Arthur Kelo – Lessons from History, Morals for Today is a maxim which helikes to keep in mind when writing his articles. He was schooled in economics andfinance, and his line of thought follows in the tradition of classical liberal economicssuch as those theorized by the Austrian and Monetarist schools of thought. RickKelo’s articles remain unique in contemporary analysis and criticism of moderngovernmental policy, with his ability to simplify great economic theory of the pastand apply them to modern contexts. In doing so, he is able to expose the fault linesin the economy, and highlight the negative impact the current taxation system ishaving on our nation.

The thinkers Rick Kelo admires as having developed the most profound andrelevant economic theories are Ludwig von Mises, John Locke and BenjaminFranklin. The latter was famously quoted as once saying that ‘It would be a hardgovernment that should tax its people one-tenth part of their income’. It is asentiment Rick Kelo very much agrees with. BY imposing higher taxes onbusinesses and individuals, the government is hampering the economy, and notallowing it to thrive as it should. High taxation is also a dangerous swing towardssocialist economics, which as Rick Kelo points out in his articles has led todisastrous effects on economies in the past.
