Last week we began our NAIDOC celebrations where our junior students were lucky enough to undertake a variety of workshops led by local elders and experts in Aboriginal culture. The workshops included bush tucker cooking classes, performance classes, weaving and a tour of cultural sights. We then finalised our NAIDOC celebrations with an assembly on Wednesday where we were lucky enough to have a Welcome to Country performed by Uncle Lewis Walker who then followed up with a performance on the didge. Uncle Norm Sheehan from SCU talked to the school about Songlines, then the assembly concluded with an amazing performance by the Rivers College Aboriginal Performance Ensemble, a group consisting of Richmond River, Kadina and Lismore High students. On Thursday we celebrated academic achievement of our junior students with the Junior Awards Assembly. It was terrific to have so many students being acknowledged for the success that they are making with their academic progress and application. I am proud of our students for their involvement at both events. Last Tuesday we launched the anti-bullying platform, STYMIE. The online notification system provides students with the opportunity to anonymously report an instance of bullying or anti -social behaviour that they have witnessed. Reports are emailed directly to school staff who will follow it up. STYMIE has proven to be a very powerful program already and we have been able to address a number of issues and support the students concerned. I encourage you to log on to stymie.com.au and have a look. The Year 8 Personal Interest Projects (PIPs) have been marked this week. The quality of the projects is amazing and Year 8 are to be congratulated. There will be a showcase of the projects in Week 7 as a part of our belated Education Week celebrations Our P and C meeting is this coming Monday. I hope you can join us. Project Based Learning with a NAIDOC theme Last week, Richmond River High Campus celebrated NAIDOC week and the culture, knowledge and skills that come with this wonderful opportunity for apprecia-tion, paying of respects and of course learning. In or-der to make the most of this opportunity, Year 7 and 8 have been taking part in a new initiative that has only been introduced to RRHC in 2016; Project Based Learning. On Tuesday, the Year 8 cohort and then Thursday, the Year 7 cohort, were presented with a series of op-tions all with a NAIDOC theme to investigate with the Project Based Learning framework to guide them. These NAIDOC based options include: Sites with significance: an excursion to a num-

ber of sites of significance within the local area which was hosted by Uncle Roy Gordon, a local Aboriginal elder and tour guide.

Aboriginal Art and Skills: an opportunity for stu-

dents to practice traditional skills in weaving and tool making with local artist and expert, Aunty Kylie Caldwell.

Traditions and Ceremonies: an occasion for stu-

dents to incorporate their knowledge of cultural traditions and ceremonies such as Dreaming stories into a modern contemporary perfor-mance.

Wild Kitchen: an amazing experience where stu-

dents tasted native Australian foods such as Kangaroo, Mountain Pepper and Lemon Myrtle and applying these flavours in a contemporary context such as pancakes. YUM!!

Success stories: a scenario where students

were able to look at Indigenous stories of suc-cess, to identify the barriers that we overcome and what strategies can be used to do this all the while celebrating local dialects and traditions from our local region.

There were a range of fantastic products created from these learning experiences which collectively demon-strate the amazing skills and knowledge of the stu-

dents here at RRHC. An enormous thank you to the experts that contrib-uted to the activities who were Uncle Roy Gordon for his expertise in local sites of significance, Aunty Kylie Caldwell for her wisdom and talents in weav-ing, Gus Donaghy from Cooking with Fire for his supply of those delicious Australian native foods, Uncle Louis for his brilliant Welcome to Country, Didge playing abilities, artistic talents and inspira-tional aura and, of course, all the teachers that were involved for their amazing effort and contributions. All the Year 11 Snow Bunnies after 5 fantastic days on the snow. What great representatives of our school!!

The NAIDOC Assembly was a very positive way to finish our NAIDOC celebrations at RRHC. The Assem-bly hosted by Jack Brady Corowa and Barry Butler started with a memorable “Welcome to Country” by Un-cle Lewis Walker, Bundjalung Elder, in Indigenous language. The Keynote Address given by Dr Norm Sheehan, Gnibi College, SCU, reflected on this year’s theme for NAIDOC “Songlines”. Mrs Sonya Laverty addressed the Assembly about the success of the Widjabal Wiyabal Dreaming initiative of The Rivers Col-lege, and the positive impact it is having. Well done to The Rivers ATSI Performing Arts Ensemble who performed “Middle Earth”. The RRHC staff band “Grug” did a great rendition of “Solid Rock”. A very reflec-tive and affirming Assembly, thank you to Mrs Paula Moverley and Mr Tyrone Connors, along with all the other staff, community members and students for making it such a memorable Assembly.

Leo’s Change-Over Dinner On Monday the 1st of August some RRHC Leo’s mem-bers attended the Official Change Over-Dinner where the previous presidency role of Leo’s was handed over to the president for this year. It was handed from Jessica Martin to Chloe Mills, unfortunately due to the snow trip Jess couldn’t attend. Congratulations to our Leo’s leaders, Chloe Mills – President, Sveva Bennett – Vice President, Eve Robinson – Secretary and Nick Eggler – Treasurer. There were many inspiring speeches; we also swore an oath to the community and to the Leo’s group. The char-ter, gong and gavel were also officially handed over. To make the evening even more memorable Chloe received the Jack Mason Memorial Award from the Lion’s group. On a remarkable note, this September will mark the 10th year of the Leo’s group at RRHC, thank you to everyone who has been involved with the Leo’s Club. Eve Robin-son, Year 9.
