Reminder - Drop off and pick up at back of school Parents who are dropping off or picking up their children before or after school are reminded to do this in the areas outside of the bus, taxi, disability parking, and no stopping zones at the front of the school. Suggested safe areas are the grassy tree-ed area outside the Ag Shed in Lake Street or near the shelter in McKenzie Park in Pitt Street, where there is a footpath to the school. The other alternative is at the back gate of the school on Alexandra Parade. The safety of our students is paramount.

Deputy Principal’s News Hello RRHC Community

It has been a hot and busy week at RRHC with the continuation of the HSC examinations. The Year 12 Formal will be held next Friday night at the Workers Club and we wish them all a happy night.

Our School Captains and Vice Captains speeches will occur next Tuesday morning providing the opportunity for all students to hear why they should be School Captains, voting will also occur on Tuesday.

Our top ten Vivo point earners were presented with prizes on Wednesday. Students earn Vivo points for outstanding effort and application both in class and in school wide events. Congratulations to the rewarded students, and over the coming weeks more rewards will be shared to worthy students. Remember to ask your teachers for Vivos if you deserve them. A special thank you to all our sponsors who kindly donate prizes for the students.

Uniform We have been very impressed with the effort that most of the students have made to wear the correct uniform. It makes a difference to the feel of the school when everyone shows that they can follow expectations.

There are a variety of good reasons why wearing uniform is important: Safety, safety, safety. We are a large school with many students. It is easy to spot anyone out of

uniform, particularly useful for identifying anyone who has not signed in as a visitor. It is also important to wear uniform on excursions for supervision purposes.

The school community including P&C and SRC set the uniform expectations. The NSW DEC Core Rules: Student Discipline in NSW Government Schools states that all students

are expected to maintain a neat appearance, including adhering to the requirements of the school’s uniform or dress code policy.

Wearing the uniform is an immediate and visible indicator that you are part of our school culture. On the odd occasions when your uniform is unavailable it is important to bring a note from home and get a uniform pass from the Deputies. Students out of uniform may be required to use one of the loan uniforms in the library.

Arriving late or need to leave early? All students arriving late or needing to leave school early must have a note from home which they must take to the office. Students leaving early must be picked up by a parent and will not be given permission to walk home.

“It’s not about what it is, it’s about what it can become.” (Dr. Seuss)

Have a happy and safe weekend

Regards Luke Woodward Deputy Principal

HSC Business Studies

Confucius once said, "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand" and this ideology is extremely valid when studying the world of business. This term our HSC Business Studies students are studying Operations. As part of their studies, students travelled to Timezone Coolangatta this week to see Operations Management in action. Students were given two hours of play time to experience Timezone; to see the different games, the layout of the store, the prizes available and what the customer experience is like. Following game time, the students were given a tour of the business by the Operations Manager who explained key aspects of the business including the strategic role of operations, transformation processes and operations strategies. As a bonus, two students who asked the best question on tour (as voted by the Operations Manager) were awarded with a game of Gold Coast Monopoly which was only released this week and features Timezone as one of the squares of the game board. It was an extremely enjoyable and educational excursion which will continue to help bring the theory we learn this term to life as we apply it to what we have seen and learnt at Timezone. A very big thank you to Stephen and the entire team at Timezone Coolangatta for making this possible. Liz Perry Business Studies Teacher

Is There a Doctor in the House?

We all have ambitions to become one thing or another; at Richmond River we have sixteen young aspiring students looking to have a career in the Health and Medical industry. These students attended the annual “Do you want to be a Health Professional” day, organised by Connect Northern Rivers and held at The Centre for Rural Health in Lismore.

The day began with students listening to a panel of specialists in the areas of, Medicine, Occupational Therapy, Medical Imaging, Osteopathy, Speech Pathology, Radiation Therapy, Pharmacy, Nutrition and Dietetics. The panel gave in-depth descriptions of what’s required, covering the good, the bad and the ugly, to gain work in these fields. Students then had an opportunity to ask questions.

The afternoon was broken into sections of practical activities. The students’ favourite was suturing. Students were shown how to put stitches in using the equipment used in a hospital, on wet suit material, they’re not up to stitching a person yet!

RRHC students represented the school with pride and displayed how fantastic they will be in the work force when they leave education.

RRHC would like to thank Connect Northern Rivers, the staff at the Centre for Rural Health, and all presenters who volunteered to speak to the students.

We look forward to next year. Scott Harrison Transition Adviser

All My Own Work All My Own Work will be running for Year 10 on Monday November 19. All My Own Work is a NESA program that informs Year 10 students of their responsibilities concerning submitting only work that they have completed themselves and educates them as to what equates to cheating in assessments. It is a requirement of NESA that all students complete the course before they are able to be entered into their Year 11 courses. Sarah Helliwell NESA Contact/VET Coordinator

The Rivers Secondary College - Richmond River High Campus uses STYMIE to support

student wellbeing and to support direct action against bullying in our school. The program educates bystanders about their responsibilities and provides an online, independent reporting method, ensuring complete anonymity for students making notifications; creating a sense of safety in ‘the crowd’. The use of Stymie will help change the ‘culture of acceptance’ of bullying behaviours. Students can access Stymie by going to www.stymie.com.au and www.facebook.com/stymieau
