Overview:
Richland School District Two has for many years been a proponent of allowing different options
and choices for our students and families. Following the creation of the first magnet program in the dis-
trict, The Learning Collaborative (TLC) at Dent Middle School in 1992, the district now has more magnet
offerings than we have total schools. Beginning in the fall of 2014, Richland Two will have 37 different
magnet or choice options including the Richland Two Charter High School. Magnets in Richland Two are
specific or specialized programs across the district that are by definition designed to draw students to a
specific location. In Richland Two magnet programs are designed to serve a wide variety of student inter-
ests. Some magnet programs use certain criteria for selection and others utilize random selection. Rich-
land Two not only allows for families and students to participate in magnets but also Expanded Choice.
Expanded Choice is the program that allows for families to apply and send their children to a school other
than their zoned school. This program began in 1999 and continues to be very popular across the district.
The purpose of this report is to give you a “snapshot” of each magnet and the district wide ex-
panded choice program In this snapshot, we give you a brief description of the program, enrollment data,
year started, last time a full evaluation was conducted, applicant numbers, demographic data, and num-
ber of non-zoned students. This report will be used to assist in the analysis of our magnet and program
offerings moving forward.

The Expanded Choice program offers parents and students residing in Richland Two the opportunity to request permis-
sion to attend a school other than their residentially assigned school. Parents may apply electronically each January for
placement that will take effect the following school year. Parents whose children participate in any of the district's
Choice or magnet programs must provide transportation for their children to and from school. The inability of a student
to meet the attendance expectations of the Choice school will lead to Choice being revoked. In that case, the student
must then return to the zoned school.

The Academy for Civic Engagement at Lonnie B. Nelson Elementary will prepare children to become con-
tributing members of our democratic society and responsible citizens of our community and our world.
The students build partnerships with local government and local businesses as they learn to become re-
sponsible citizens. The Academy for Civic Engagement encourages active citizenship by giving students
opportunities to translate civic education into community engagement.

The Center for Achievement is designed to work with students who learn differently. We strive to take struggling stu-
dents and produce satisfaction and achievement rather than frustration and failure. We have openings for the stu-
dent that has the ability to do well but is not working to his/her full potential. Students are not required to have
been identified as having a learning disability, they just need to be struggling in at least one area. We are not a lottery
based program. Students have to qualify for our program by having some weakness in one of the academic areas.

The Center for Inquiry is a Richland Two magnet school for kindergartners through fifth graders. As a Professional De-
velopment School, it unites our district with the University of South Carolina to create a unique learning environment
in a small school setting. The Center for Inquiry's teachers remain with the same group of students for two years, to
minimize time lost in transitions between grades and to build strong learning communities. A key feature is the
school's focus on "inquiry based" instruction. The classes emphasize hands-on learning experiences, high-interest
studies, and integrated curriculum. The approach is innovative and students are held to high standards.

Conder’s instructional program focuses on Common Core State Standards through scientific researched based instruction and arts infu-
sion. Students are actively involved in the learning process. Core academic subjects are the primary areas of focus across the curricu-
lum. Writing and technology are integrated through out the instructional program. We are proud of our outstanding art and music programs, as
well as our two state-of-the-art computer labs. Our school offers a variety of school-wide programs and activities designed to enhance student

Forest Lake Technology Magnet School, a NASA Explorer School, provides a challenging curriculum that encourages students to inquire about
their world. Teachers plan collaboratively to develop units of study that integrate 21st century technologies, emphasize digital and information
literacy, apply critical thinking skills, and engage in the use of problem solving strategies. Teachers and students use classroom Tech Zones, Net-

Making a commitment to CAP means giving your child the opportunity to obtain the tools and skills necessary to
regain the appropriate placement in our educational system. CAP is a two-year program designed for 7th graders
who are a least one grade level behind. The program offers and intense course of study to provide students the
opportunity to enter high school as sophomores on schedule for graduation. During the intensive two year pro-
gram of study, students will complete 7th-, 8th-, and 9th- grade requirements, enabling them to enter high school
as sophomores.

In separated classes for the school day, boys and girls experience a rich educational opportunity where defining the unique genius of each
child is the goal. Parents play a vital role in this magnet program. The TWO Academies began in August 2004 with 6th grade. In 2005 it add-
ed 7th grade. Eighth grade was added in 2006 – 2007. The TWO Academies is currently located in the “D” hallway at Dent Middle
School. The lead teacher’s office is also on this hallway. TWO is a magnet program where students apply for admission. The admission pro-

BioHealth science involves the study and application of principles of natural sciences as they relate to living organisms in the area of medicine. This dynamic
field offers a wide variety of professions such as medical doctors, dentists, physical therapists, nurse practitioners, biomedical engineers, veterinarians, genetic
engineers and pharmacists. Students in the four-year institute will participate in a rigorous and comprehensive program that will include Honors and AP sci-

The Scholars Academy is a four-year Honors/AP magnet program designed for students with a commitment to academic excellence, motiva-
tion to learn and a drive to understand the interpersonal and intrapersonal dynamics of our global society through a human ecology lens.
This magnet provides an enriched personalized course of study with a focus on the Humanities in an effort to prepare students to be well-
rounded candidates for the most selective colleges and universities. Scholars Academy graduates become citizens, scholars, and practition-
ers who use research and interdisciplinary perspectives to work with others as team members and leaders to anticipate, analyze, and ad-
dress contemporary societal problems. Graduates pursue studies in a wide variety of fields including health, business, technology, design,
policy, law, public service, and research.

The Richland Two Charter High School is an independent high school only connected to Richland School District Two
by the charter. Classes are offered through the internet. We have partnered with Richland School District Two to pro-
vide your classes via the Virtual High School already established within the district. Students have access to our full-
time English teacher, math tutor, and lab specialist. Core classes will be tailored to your learning style with help from
our highly certified teachers and staff to meet your learning needs. If that is how you learn best, then you can com-
