I chose to study this close intimate symbiotic relationship to explore applications between architecture and the programs residing within. The result is a building which consists of a continuous concrete ribbon weaving in and out of the existing building, sculpting new spaces and volumes. This methodology connects and facilitates interaction between the two existing programs of research gallery and theater. With this fluid motion, the ribbon starts to sculpt out an internal atrium space, essentially joining the two main masses and their programs together into one cohesive building where users will be able to easily circulate between. Frame[work] is a community dedicated to the designing and manufacturing innovative and affordable prosthetics for children. Through our mission, we hope to introduce, educate, and engage the public to the up and rising maker culture especially predominant in the Dogpatch district of San Francisco. Frame[work] aims to show that we are all designers and are capable of creating things that can effect and improve the lives of not only ourselves but also the lives of others. Formal and spatial strategies aim to actively connect the building to its surrounding context through extending park pathways, framing views, opening up spaces, and concentrating communal and maker activity in key program beams and enlarged circulation areas.

In addition to designing buildings for studio projects, I’ve also had opportunities to design a few products for both studio and classes outside of studio. The headphone stand was a interesting project to work on as this was designed for one of my history classes surrounding the topic of desert modernism. I decided to design and fabricate a headphone stand inspired by googie styled architecture with its futuristic curves being one of its most distinctive features. The swing chair was a project designed for a studio class. The name swing chair originates from the fact that the red seating area is adjustable and rolls along bearings installed within the handles so that the user may sit facing either direction without having to spin the chair around, or if the user wanted to swing like they would in a hammock they could.
