Jason Spears, the 12-year-old student who was re-cently murdered,

apparently received a bulletthat was not intended for him.I’ve made a commitment towrite positive and uplifting ar-ticles about our students so Iwant to share what students andstaff at Lincoln ElementarySchool and Arrowview MiddleSchool thought of him.

Mr. Walt Vidan had this toshare: As middle school teach-ers who are trying to educate200-plus students every day, wehave to work hard to treat eachstudent individually. Each onehas hopes, dreams, and desires.Jason, not only had all these at-tributes, but also was special. He was a bit reserved but popu-lar with his fellow students. Hewas a good-looking young manwho was well liked.

This is what Ms. Renita Mar-shall wants you to know: Jasonwas in my fourth-grade class-room. He was a beautiful kid

with such a gentle heart. Jasonand I were very close. Wewould walk on the playgroundtogether and he’d tell me abouthis love for his family, and hishopes for the future. He spent a lot of time thinkingand reflecting on life. For athen 9-year-old, I encouragedhim to use that as his tool to beresilient in the classroom. Hewas a simple kid, with aspira-tions of having a fulfilling life.He loved to draw, and was suc-cessful at activities in the class-room that allowed him to beinnovative. He brought aunique value to my classroomthat was unmatched by anyother student.

Counselors Kimberly Telphyand Andrea Calderon werethere to take care of studentswho were deeply hurt and emo-tional. As part of a healingprocess, many of our sixth-grade students express theirfeelings by writing and creatinga card for Jason’s family.Students wrote, “He was agood friend to all of us,” “Jasonwas a good friend who alwayshelped others,” “Good friendand good classmate.”

Students even wrote and cre-ated their own quote. “You willnever be forgotten, we pledgeto you today a hollowed placewithin our hearts is whereyou’ll always stay.” And fi-nally, one student wrote toJason’s mother, “Sorry for yourloss, your son was a good friendand a good student in class andhe could not tell a lie.”

Jason loved sports and reallyliked playing basketball duringhis lunchtime. Many studentssaid they miss him playing ball.Jason expressed that he wantedto become an engineer when hegrows up.

Ms. Teri Weatherholtz wantsus to know that Jason came intoher classroom as a shy and quiet5-year-old. She was privilegedto spend a year teaching andlearning from this smart, kind, charismatic boy. When he lefther class, he didn’t leave herheart.

“Whenever he would see mehe would greet me with a bighug.” We, (Jason’s teachers)were asked what we would re-member most about Jason, weall agreed, his smile. His smilecould brighten the darkest day.

The terrorist attacks in Brusselsremind us once again of the threatto our own nation and citizens.Radical Islamists are determinedto use violence to create a world-wide caliphate in which sharia lawwould prevail. Our challenge is tofight these extremists effectivelywithout assuming that all Muslimsshare that goal.We must begin by refusing entryto any foreigner who cannot besubjected to a routine background

check, making it more difficult forjihadists to come here. Our gov-ernment must also take seriouslythose who speak and preach thenecessity of violent jihad, recog-nizing that they may followthrough on their beliefs or inspirethose around them to violent acts.We must step up the war to de-stroy the Islamic State. Jihadistsmust be shown that their dream ofa modern-day caliphate was an il-lusion, not reality, and that vio-

lence will be in vain. This is not a time for despair, buta time for common-sense actionunhampered by political correct-ness.

Donald Trump has perfected theart of baiting the media by beingbold, brash and cunning, and themedia have taken the bait. This hasgiven him all the free publicity hewants and has allowed him to be-come the Republican front-runner.

Lest we forget: John McCaincriticized him on immigration andTrump’s response was to say Mc-Cain is not a war hero because he

was taken prisoner. While McCainwas “luxuriating” at the HanoiHilton, Trump was running aroundin designer suits and racking upmillions of dollars.

Fox’s Megyn Kelly questionedTrump’s Republican credentials, and his response was too disgust-ing to print here. What might he doto another country if a leader sayssomething to displease King Don-

ald?

The fervent hope is that his sup-porters will see him for the egotis-tical manipulator that he is. Oh,and no, I’m not going to vote forDonald Trump.

No to King Donald

Self-consumed commercial hus-tler Donald Trump has playedupon conservative anger againstthe corrosive liberal DemocratParty establishment by running forpresident in the 2016 election, which handed the Democrats theopportunity to create the perfectstorm against him and the Repub-

lican Party.

And the liberal Democrat cartelof government, news media andeducation are doing it. This is notpolitics as usual. It is in fact alooming calamity (an event thatcauses great harm and suffering)for America.

Unacceptable! Particularly inthis era of domestic and nationalsecurity peril. Vote for survival.

Response to Joy A. Schrader RegardingCity wide elections

The argument against city coun-cil people being elected by thewhole city vs their separate wardis really quite simple.

To run a city wide campaigncosts significantly more moneyand time than just running a wardcampaign. This greatly lowers thepool of potential candidates.

Many, qualified people would notrun as they would neither have thetime nor the money , and certainlywould not have as much of achance of being winning.

Many years ago Colton had allof its Council people elected bythe city at large. What we consis-tently had was all of them living

within a few miles of each other. This led to disenfranchising of alarge portion of the city as theydidn't know their council personand didn't feel they knew them.

Words to Think About: Easter Thoughts

By G. W. Abersold Ph.D.

On Sunday, March 27th,millions of Christiansthroughout the world cel-

ebrated Easter.Easter is the day when Christianscelebrate the most fundamental ofall Christian holidays-the resurrec-tion of Jesus. In fact, St. Paul, thefounder of Christianity, said in I

Corinthians 15:14, “If Christ benot risen, then is our faith vain.”No one knows exactly whenJesus was born, but Easter can becalculated because of Passover.Jesus and his disciples were cele-brating Passover, which precededthe Crucifixion and Resurrectionon Easter Sunday.Another pivotal point is, the res-urrection occurred on Sundayrather than the Jewish Sabbath.Sunday is the first day of the week, when the Gospels say Jesus rose. This means every Sunday is thecommemorative day for Christianswhen they should be reminded ofthis most important belief. Andyet, in most churches, it is seldommentioned except on Easter Sun-day.There is little or no empiricalproof of the resurrection. The tes-timony of the Gospels is the pri-mary source of proof. The problemis, the earliest of the Gospels-

Mark-was written 50 years afterthe event. The other three Gospelswere written much later. Was the resurrection of Jesus aphysical or spiritual one? MostChristians today accept it as spiri-tual. It is difficult to reconcile aphysical resurrection with a beliefin spiritual immortality. The reality of Jesus’ post-cruci-fixion aliveness is the impact onthe disciples. Something changedthem from a timid group of cow-ards into a group of men andwomen who were described as“turning the world upside down.”They literally toppled the RomanEmpire and took control of it withEmperor Constantine. The second pivotal belief ex-pressed in Easter is the affirmationof immortality. Again, the ApostlePaul graphically describes thishope: “O death, where is thy sting?O grave, where is thy victory?” (ICorinthians 15:55) The hope of the

Christian is that death is not theend of human existence. Eternallife is ahead. Most people know Albert Ein-stein for his Theory of Relativity.Lesser known is his belief and ad-vocacy of the “indestructibility ofmatter.” Matter will change ap-pearance but never lose its molec-ular essence-from ice to water tosteam. It doesn’t seem reasonablethat our Creator would make thephysical indestructible and thenallow the spiritual to be destroyed,or as Teilhard Chardin, the greatRoman Catholic theologian hassaid, “It is utterly absurd to believethat the human spirit is so poorlydevised that it would contradict itshighest aspiration.”Easter brings out thousands ofpeople to church who have not at-tended for some time. Easter eggs, baby chicks, Easter lilies andbrightly colored clothes all reflectthe new life of spring or Oester, as

the early pagans called it. Chris-tians will gather and sing, “Christthe Lord is Risen Today,” and af-firm again the aliveness of thespirit of Jesus and their belief ineternal life.Eugene O’Neill in his classicnovel, “Lazarus Laughed,” de-scribes Lazarus-of Mary andMartha fame-in Athens, Greece.Emperor-to-be Caligula is leadinga procession where everyone butLazarus is bowing. The arroganceof Lazarus irritates Caligula. Hethreatens to kill Lazarus for refus-ing to bow. Lazarus responds, “Oh,Caligula, don’t you know death isdead?” He had been there anddone that and he had no fear of it.To the Christian, death is but thetransformation from this life to thenext. It is appropriate for Christians tosing the “Hallelujah Chorus” onEaster Sunday.Amen. Selah. So be it.

Wilson Brothers played key role in best recordedmusic derived from San Bernardino

By Harvey M. Kahn

Eddie and Al Wilson de-veloped their singingtalents at an early age.

The brothers began singinggospel music together in theirpre-teens in their Meridian, Mis-sissippi church until they movedto San Bernardino. They werefairly successful at the commer-cial pop level by recording anumber of catchy songs with theJewels and the Rollers. By1964, Eddie and Al went theirseparate ways musically. Al was hired by England'sJohnny Harris to sing lead vo-cals in his rock/jazz fusiongroup the Statesmen. Eddiewent back to singing gospel andformed his own group called

Eddie Wilson and the Integra-tions. Eddie Wilson then per-formed for the next 20 yearswith the Mighty Kings of Har-mony of San Bernardino. At the same time Al Wilsonwas working his way up the top-40 charts, Eddie Wilson pre-ferred the gospel end of thebusiness. Al was flying to NewYork and Europe while Eddieand the five members of theMighty Kings of Harmonydrove the distance of Interstate-10 to sing in churches through-out the south. "There wasn't atime when it wasn't rainingwhen we drove through Texas,"said Eddie Wilson. In a conversation from hishome in Rialto, Eddie Wilson,79, did not seem interested in

becoming an internationallyknown performer like hisbrother. He was proud of hisbrother's worldly achievementsand likewise was proud of hisown. Both brothers and anothersinging brother, Teddy Wilsonnever abandoned SanBernardino as their home. "I was a gospel singer and Alwas a good gospel singer at onetime. Al was just a naturalsinger who could sing anystyle," said Eddie Wilson, thelast living member of the Wil-son brothers. "Al became moredevoted to pop music." As popsingers, the Wilson's appearedon the television dance shows ofDick Clark, Wink Martindale, and Sam Riddle. While undercontract to Liberty Records, they toured with stars likeBobby Vee, Jan & Dean, Bren-ton Wood, and Del Shannon. Asthe Rollers, they were booked in1964 with surf groups like DickDale and the Del Tones at theformer Swing Auditorium inSan Bernardino."Everyone came to the SwingAuditorium back then," recalledWilson. Full scope MediCal, health conditions for LGBTQdetainees highlight health conference

By Anthony Victoria

Immigration organizers andhealth advocates emphasizedthe importance of mental and

physical health stability in immi-grant communities during a healthconference at Pitzer College onMarch 26.The second-year UndocuHealthConference put together by theInland Empire Immigrant YouthCoalition (IEIYC) featured work-

shops and discussions about im-portant topics such as Full ScopeMediCal for All Children (SenateBill 75) and the conditions of im-migrant detainees in U.S. Immi-gration and Customs Enforcement(ICE) detention centers.“For us [the immigrant commu-nity], this is a conversation,” saidInland Coalition for ImmigrantJustice (ICIJ) director Javier Her-nandez. “We are systematicallyexcluded from health. We need to

take in this information and con-tinue to fight for health for all.”

The decision to expand MediCalto all children regardless of citi-zenship status resulted in a $40million distribution of statemonies to fund the program in thenext fiscal year, with $132 millionintended to be allocated in follow-ing years. When implementationof the expansion takes place inMay, an estimated 170,000 un-

documented children will be eli-gible for health coverage underthe state-sponsored program.Maribel Nunez of the CaliforniaPartnership referred to recent dataand health studies that demon-strate a lack of coverage amongthe immigrant community. Ac-cording to a study done by theUCLA Center for Health PolicyResearch, up to 1.5 million un-documented immigrants will re-main uninsured by 2019. About122,000 of those who are unin-sured reside in the Inland Empire. Nonetheless Nunez said about28,000 undocumented youthunder the age of 19 will benefitfrom the implementation of fullscope MediCal coverage. She ishoping the continuing efforts ofthe California Partnership, theIEIYC, and other immigrantrights advocates will urge stateleaders to expand coverage to un-documented adults.“We appreciate Senator Lara’sleadership, but he did not talk tothe community advocates,” shesaid. “We’re trying to work withhim more closely to push for-ward.”An organizer’s ethnographic re-search displays incarceration ratesamong Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,Transexual, and Queer (LGBTQ)immigrants.According to Jesus Barrios, health educator with the HispanicAids Forum and founder of theIEIYC, in the 20 interviews he

has conducted in the last tenmonths, approximately 85 percentrequested mental health services,HIV care, and attention for otherailments. Barrios said he hopes his re-search will help transform healthpractices in the immigrant com-munity and “fill the gaps.”“The advocacy needs to con-tinue,” said Barrios. “Publichealth has an important role, whether directly or indirectly. Un-documented people are barredfrom receiving health benefits. How can we work together tomake sure people in detention ac-cess at full capacity?”Conference keynote speakerImelda Plascencia of the LatinoCoalition For A Healthy Califor-nia encouraged preventative careas a means to not only resolvesystemic problems in immigrantcommunities, but also sustainhealthy behaviors on a day-to-daybasis.“A lot of issues we are facing aresystemic. It’s been constructed forus to not have access to healthyfood and environment. It’s veryeasy to disregard undocumentedpeople’s lives,” she said. “But weare a part of the fabrication ofwhat California is. Immigrantstake care of the state in unseenways. This Health for All move-ment is our way of saying, wetake care of California. Californiashould be taking care of us.”

Cesar Chavez (born CésarEstrada Chávez, March31, 1927 – April 23,

1993) was an American farmworker, labor leader and civilrights activist, who, with DoloresHuerta, co-founded the NationalFarm Workers Association (laterthe United Farm Workers union,UFW).A Mexican American, Chavezbecame the best known LatinoAmerican civil rights activist, andwas strongly promoted by theAmerican labor movement, which was eager to enroll His-panic members. His public-rela-tions approach to unionism andaggressive but nonviolent tacticsmade the farm workers' strugglea moral cause with nationwidesupport. By the late 1970s, histactics had forced growers to rec-ognize the UFW as the bargainingagent for 50,000 field workers inCalifornia and Florida. However,by the mid-1980s membership inthe UFW had dwindled to around15,000.During his lifetime, ColegioCesar Chavez was one of the fewinstitutions named in his honor, but after his death he became amajor historical icon for theLatino community, with manyschools, streets, and parks beingnamed after him. He has since be-come an icon for organized labor

and leftist politics, symbolizingsupport for workers and for His-panic empowerment based ongrass roots organizing. He is alsofamous for popularizing the slo-gan "Sí, se puede" (Spanish for"Yes, one can" or, roughly, "Yes,it can be done"), which wasadopted as the 2008 campaignslogan of Barack Obama. Hissupporters say his work led to nu-

merous improvements for unionlaborers. Although the UFW fal-tered a few years after Chavezdied in 1993, he became an iconic"folk saint" in the pantheon ofMexican Americans. His birth-day, March 31, has become CesarChavez Day, a state holiday inCalifornia, Colorado, and Texas
