President, Rotary International

Issue No. 7Governor's Monthly Letter JANUARY 2011

January is the month the Romans associated with their two headed Go Janus, one head looking backward to the

year that has just passed, and the other looking forward to the year ahead.

We are racing ahead in our year of activity in bringing new members into the Family of Rotary.

I once had an interaction with a past Rotary International Officer, who had spent his entire professional career in

Public Relations. I asked him the definition of 'PR', he said, "Do good deeds, and tell people you have done them."

Rotary has successfully performed good deeds for nearly 100 years, but we have hidden our light under a bushel for

far too long. We want to reach the hearts and souls of millions of prospective members who are not yet Rotarians,

simply because no one has ever asked them. We want to change the figure of 1.2 million. We want to win the

competition for membership growth. We must do good deeds and tell everyone about what we have done. We must

make the Rotary Wheel the brand image of Service, Friendship and Hope in the minds of the Future Generations.

Rotarians are able to make changes that will shape the course, not only of the months, but of the years and decades

that lie ahead. This is our privilege. It is our duty as Rotarians - as caring members of society who are in the fortunate

position of being asked to help those living in conditions that are barely humane. We are all volunteers serving in the

World's largest voluntary organisation. None of us was compelled to become a Rotarian. Each of us chose and was

TEST TIME!

We are at the halfway point in this Rotary year, and now is the time to test the strengths and weaknesses of our clubs. Perhaps

a strange idea for some Rotarians, but how else will we learn how the activities and programs of our respective clubs match

up to those of other clubs in our districts - and around the world? Therefore, I encourage all Rotarians - not only the club

officers - to become involved in evaluating their clubs during the month of January.

The Presidential Citation program for 2010-11 has been designed as a score sheet for all the Avenues of Service. It also is a

checklist for many of the activities and programs conducted by most clubs. Club presidents are required to complete the

score sheets and submit them to their district governors by 31 March 2011 for their clubs to be eligible for the Presidential

Citation awards. The scores should be shared with all club members either as written reports or as presentations at club

meetings.

Starting work on the Presidential Citation test in January will provide an opportunity to correct any discovered deficiencies in

R I District 3150

chosen to become a member. Every year, every day each of us chooses to continue the task we have begun, and continue to put 'Service above Self'. It is

not always the easy path but I know that it is the right one.

Think about the power of Rotary. Once you give a thought, it will be very easy for you to ask your friends to join Rotary, join the Rotarians who share

Rotary with others. I urge you to become a soldier in 'Building Communities and Bridging Continents, and propel our District 3150 forward.

So, there is a lot to be done in the next six months. Do not waste a moment of that most precious commodity - 'TIME'.

club activities before the submission deadline of 31 March. It also will cause the club leaders to notice that a new Presidential Citation with Distinction award

is available this year for clubs with a good balance of activities in all Avenues of Service.

This year I am recommending that all clubs review their practices and procedures to see if they are truly best practices or merely traditional practices. Annual

evaluations of our clubs are certainly best practices, and more Rotarians than usual need to be involved in the evaluations for their clubs. The Presidential

Citation score sheets are a good place to start the process. How else will we know if our clubs really are becoming Bigger, Better, and Bolder?

R.I. DISTRICT 3150 CONFERENCE – AANANDAM – DISTRIBUTION OF 2550 SCHOOL BENCHES

RIGHT TO LEARNEducation is priceless - this holds especially truein third world countries. It gives theunderpriviledged an avenue of escape - itempowers them, making them realize their inherentpotential and allows them to go on and bevaluable members of society. In India, there aremillions of children who attend school, schoolswhich can be described as nothing less thandilapidated holes in the walls. Seedy classrooms, dusty floors and broken furniture are just someof the conditions these children have to face onan everyday basis. Settings less than conducivefor a wholesome education wouldn't you say.Rotary District 3150 saw the urgency in addressingthis issue and set about funding valuableinfrastructure. They provided a number ofbenches and desks to schools in a number ofvillages, and are in the process of donating more.At a cost of as little as US $ 50 a bench can beprovided to a school (seating 3 children, 15benches are needed to furnish a classroom). Asmall price indeed when you compare it to theextent it will go in educating scores of children.R.I. A STITCH IN TIME BUILDS LIVES

You have seen the beautiful Indian saris, their rich weaves andintricate designs. Still richer are the traditions that go into theirmaking. Picture this. Hundreds of talented women from the villagesstitching and sewing; putting their heart and soul into their work sothat someone somewhere will have something nice to wear. Nowspare a thought for their motivations. Many of these people haveno alternate source of income. They do what they do because theylove doing it but also because it is the only way they know how tosupport their families and send their children to school. Withoutthe tools of their trade, they are helpless, unable to eke out a living. We don’t have to sit back and watch. We can help. Rotary District3150 regularly chips in with contributions towards their cause. Andwe’re doing it again, on Sunday, the 19th December. Rotary Dist.3150 with your help of course, will give young and old womenfrom the villages of Andhra Pradesh cause to cheer.Rotary District 3150 with the support of Rotary Foundation andDist Governor Steven C. NATIONAL IMMUNISATION DAYS

IN THE MONTH OF JANUARYIn Rotary, January is the halfway point of our service. It is also atime for us to look at both the past and the future. It is the time ofyear to take stock to review the goals that we have set for our-selves and to evaluate how well we have fulfilled those expecta-tions. It is time to look honestly at our progress and our challengesand to consider the steps we will need to take to complete ourplanned services successfully. I am sure there is much you can beproud of achieving in the last six months. In my travels, I havealready seen how much Rotarians can accomplish, when they aredetermined to do so. A Starving Child, A Weeping Mother - Rotarycan be there An imperfect eye - Rotary can be there to help seebetter. A limb that cannot help you move - Rotary can be there tohelp you move. Rotary is the sanctity of Fellowship. Rotary is theLove of Brotherhood. Rotary is the warmth of Trust. Rotary is aVision. We build not only with concrete, but Lives and Futures. Theworld of Rotary is part of our world, a small part of this world inwhich everyone else lives. As real as Rotary is, thank goodness, there is still a mist and wisp of fancy around the edges. Just enoughmist to let us see in a different dimension. The World of Rotary hasenough fancy to make us Unique.
