by “skilled/instructed” (electrical) persons only. Refer to the IET Wiring Regulations forguidance on the selection and use of RCCBs to meet the requirements for new and existing installations. The references below are based on BS 7671: 2008 incorporating Amendment No 3: 2015.

Doepke RCCBs manufactured to the above standard are designed to protect persons against the hazards associatedwith indirect contact where exposed conductive parts of the installation are connected to a suitable earth electrode- see Regulation 411.

Doepke RCCBs with a trip rating not exceeding 30 mA, meet the requirements of Regulation 415 based on thesupplementary bonding requirements. Using RCCBs as an additional means of protection does not negate the useof basic protection methods required under regulation 411.

Doepke RCCBs with a trip rating not exceeding 300 mA meet the requirements of Regulation 532, however withinthe Regulations there are specific requirements where 300mA trip rating may not be appropriate - for exampleoverhead heating see clause 422.3.9Types of RCCB required by the IET Wiring RegulationsIn addition to standard RCCBs (Type AC) Doepke manufacture a wide range of devices with specific functions fordifferent applications. SELECTION & APPLICATIONOperating and Installation Instructions for Residual Current Circuit Breakers DFS2, DFS4

Any position. By clipping onto DIN EN 50022 rails.

Take all phase conductors and the neutral conductor (N) through the switch. The direction of the flow of energy canbe either way, i.e. the mains or the load can be connected to the upper or lower row of terminals. To ensure that thebuilt-in testing system operates properlywhen 4-pole RCCBs are used in 2-poleapplications, use the terminals as perwiring diagram. Aluminium conductorsmust be scraped and greased justbefore they are connected up to theterminals.

Testing of the entire protective systemwhen putting into operation must beperformed according to thespecifications of the valid nationalinstallation regulations. Test quarterly bypressing the test button T for stationaryequipment and once every working dayfor mobile equipment. Please note that the above fuses provide no overload protection. At the design stage check that the downstreamoverload protection does not exceed the total rated current of the RCCB.

Doepke RCCBs are calibrated for operation between +40°C to -5°C. For operation down to -25°C the maximum valuesof earth fault loop impedance defined in Table 41.5 must be reduced by 20 %.

DFS2 (230V 50Hz) and DFS4 (400V 50Hz) Test circuits will operate down to approximately 50% of the nominalvoltage. For operation on a 110V supply order a 110V unit.

DFS2 and DFS4 are calibrated to operate on 50 Hz supplies, for any other frequency order a special Doepke RCCBcalibrated for the nominal supply frequency.

Doepke residual current circuit breakers have been carefully tested at several stages of production and have left thefactory in perfect condition with regard to safety. To ensure safe operation, please observe the following instructionsand warnings.1.2.3.4.

5.

Installation may only be performed by an authorized electrician, who is acquainted with the relevantnational installation regulations.Residual current circuit breakers without additional protective housings may be stored and operated indry, low dust areas only. Corrosive atmospheres must also be avoided.Users must be reminded, that all devices should be periodically tested, using the test button T.Trips caused by leakage current due to surge voltage cannot be completely ruled out even with surgecurrent proof RCCBs. In cases where an interruption in power supply could constitute a hazard topersons or animals or cause serious damage to property, the earth leakage system should compriseselective RCCBs with increased surge current strength and over voltage protection. In special cases thesystem should be monitored with an auxiliary contact on the RCCBs and a suitable signaling device. If the device is opened the warranty becomes void!

Doepke Residual Current Circuit Breakers Type AKV

Type A KV RCCBs are designed to withstand supply transients upto 3kA, to reduce nuisance tripping associated with some loadcharacteristics, such as EV chargers, lighting and SPDs.

TypeAKV

Type AKV devices must not trip whensubjected to an 8/20µs 3kA transient orshort duration leakage currents flowing for<10ms associated with capacitor charging,EV and machines. AKV devices still meetthe tripping requirements for General/Non-delay RCCBs to EN61008-1, required foradditional protection (30mA) and fireprotection (300mA).

Type F RCCBs dectect AC, A and mixedfrequency leakage currents (F) as definedin . They also incorporate 3kA transientresistance and 10mS short time delay, toreduce nuisance tripping associated withthis type of load. These devices must not be used withloads/inverters that can producesmooth DC leakage currents -

Verify if you need Type F or Type B and the required sensitivity for the equipment.

Residual Current Circuit Breakers Type AEV

Type A EV RCCBs are designed specifically for individual EVchargers, where the model and make of the vehicle being chargedis unknown. The EV RCCB will trip if the smooth dc residualcurrent exceeds 6mA.

TypeAEV

Type A EV RCCBs in addition to providingnormal residual current protection, also protectupstream RCCBs (Type A) from the effects ofsmooth DC residual currents >6mA. Type ARCCBs cannot detect smooth DC and must notbe subjected to levels above 6mA - see WiringRegulation 722.531.2.101.

The upstream RCCB can be Type A or Type A KV depending on the inrush current ofthe vehicle charger. The smooth DC current flowing through theup stream RCCB is equal to the sum of all thechargers connected down stream.Type B RCCB required upstream.

Many electrical installations now contain products whichincorporate power electronics, such as inverters for PVinstallations, speed control in HVAC, some running machines,UPS, medical equipment etc. This type of equipment canproduce, in addition to standard 50Hz earth leakage currents, pure DC and high frequency AC leakage currents which wouldnot be detected by a standard AC or A type RCCB.

‘B’ type RCCBs in addition to normal AC, can detect highfrequency AC and pure DC earth leakage currents.

Reducing the risk of fire and/or electrocution through automaticdisconnection of the electrical supply (Reg 411), relies on theselection and installation of the correct type of RCCB.

The IEE Wiring Regs. make specific reference to ‘B’ type RCCBs

RCCBs - Practical Applications Guide

Understanding the different types of RCCB and the characteristics that may be

specified by equipment manufacturers, reduces the risk of installing inappropriate and

unsafe protection. In addition it also helps during risk assessment for existing

installations, to identify potential dangerous situations and installations.

The table below gives some generic examples based on the installed technology used

and the associated RCCB. It is imperative that the Equipment Manufacturer’s

Installation Instructions are checked, with regard to advice relating to the minimum

sensitivity and the Type of RCCB that can be used safely with their equipment.
