    Its complicated but fascinating

a family history that Andy Weiss

will share with us at our general

    meeting on Saturday, March 9.

    The characters include Lester

Johnson, his great uncle who won

the Bull of the Woods logging title

in 1929; and his great granddad

    Heinrich Weiss, who was on

    Redmonds rst City Council.

Weiss arrived in 1888 from Suhl,

Bavaria (then a kingdom and nowpart of Germany) after walking

away from army duty. Legend has

it he threw his rie in a latrine and

headed to Redmond to nd his

    uncle Friedrich Weiss, who came

here in about 1872, says Andy.

I hope to go beyond a boringchronology of the family, he

adds, and bring to life what was

    happening in Redmond and the

    local culture during their lives.

Word of a bunker at The Meadows, a Redmond subdivision built

in the 1970s, inspired us to do some gurative digging around. Retired

Police Lieutenant Jim Taylorrecalls visiting the property on his rst day

on the job in 1971and being told it was the summer estate of former

Governor Albert Rosellini. The local police even held a key to keep an eye

on the gated grounds.A search of property records establishes an E.E. Spaulding as the

longtime owner of Redwood Manorcomplete with a pool, tennis court

and 40-foot putting greenduring the time before the property was sold

for the subdivision. Moreover, several newspaper photos from the 1950s

show the couple hosting charity events at the property. So, weve still got

    some mysteries to solve:

Were the Spauldings well known and active in Redmond? Did Governor Rosellini later buy or borrow the property?

Who built the bunker and why? Was it fear of Soviet bombing?

    rhSnEwS

If you can help solve any of these mysteries, please contact Miguel

    Llanos at [email protected] or425.802.3806.

Redmonds Education Hill was once known as Poverty Hill (since it was

the last neighborhood to get water and power!) and before that it was a thick

foresall ocurred in the the last 100 years. Below we share images of that

transition we use in a new display panel on our logging and farming heritage.

Funded by 4Culture, the panel and four others in a Centennial series will be

used with exhibits around town over time. 3

Judith Simpson I have lived in Redmond since 1974 (and only one stoplight!)

First on Education Hill close to the schools and Little League eld. While my three

sons were growing up, I was involved with their activitiesScouts, PTA, etc. I

have continued to be involved in the community, serving on various boards and

commissions. In 1986, my husband and I purchased an acre that was part of the

75 acre Sanders Farm on the Redmond-Woodinville Road and had a home built

there. I enjoy sharing information with other members of the community and helping

them nd places to be involved. As a member of Evergreen Healthcare Community

Advisors, Friends of Emerald Heights, and volunteer with Redmond Police

Department I have a good cross section of the community and available information.

I look forward to continuing these activities with the Redmond Historical Society.

Kris SwansonIm a native Washingtonian and UW grad. I moved to Redmond

(Spiritbrook) 39 years ago and have lived here long enough to have enjoyed boat

races on the slough. We were a growing community and in need of parks. I servedon the park board for seven years. In that time we developed several parks and I

was very involved with a bond issue that resulted in funding for the Public Safety

Building, Senior Center and more park land. With fellow Redmondites I fought

the proposal for a shopping center on current Microsoft property. I am now using

the Senior Center I helped acquire years ago. Retired now, I am still in love with

Redmond and am proud of my town and our wonderful Senior Center. I am looking

forward to helping the Redmond Historical Society grow and prosper.

Addie Kindrick, a Redmond restaurant legend, passed away on February 2,

2013, at the age of 99. My guess is that everyone living in and around Redmond

from the 40s, 50s and early 60s had a bite to eat in one of Addies cafs, says

Judy Aries Lang. Good cook, good food and a sweetheart of a gal.

Addie saw tragedies early on in life. Her father died when she was ve. All

ve of her siblings died before their prime. Her husband Floyd Kindrick lost an

arm in a rail accident also, but Addie persevered. She and Floyd moved from

Eastern Washington to Redmond in 1937 when they purchased 2.5 acres of land

    on the Old Redmond Road.

    In 1942, Addie bought

    a cheese shop on Leary

    Way that she had been

    managing, and turned

    it into the Addi-Bon. For

    the next 13 years, she

got up at 4:00 a.m. every

    morning except Sunday,

    and worked until 7:00 p.m.

    as cook and pie-maker.

In 1955, she soldthe Addi-Bon and bought the Redmond Hotel Caf on Leary Way. She sold the

caf in 1961, and the retired Kindricks traveled until Addie got restless and bought

a hamburger place at East Lake Sammamish Parkway and Redmond-Fall City

Road. That became Adis Caf, which the Kindricks ran until 1968 when Addie

suffered a major stroke and could no longer work. Floyd passed away in 1974.

English and history teacher to hundreds of children at Redmond Junior

High, Paul Bark passed away on January 18, 2013, at the age of 91. He was

my ninth grade homeroom teacher and tennis coach, recalls Judy Aries Lang.

Adds Society President Chris Himes: Most of my children had Paul as a

teacher. He was a vital member of the Redmond community and will be missed.

A public memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2013, from 12:00

noon to 3:00 p.m. at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Auditorium.

Isabel Jones, museum director at the Tolt Historical Society, donated images of

B Lumber Industries, a mill that used to operate in the Redmond area.

Tony Emmanuel for donating several Redmond maps from years gone by as

well as a vintage Valley Supply Co. cap. I purchased hardware from the original

owners in the 50s and 60s when they were in the Sammamish River Valley

between Thenos Dairy and Hollywood, he says. As I recall, they moved to

downtown Redmond in the 60s, in the block south of Keybank near an original

    Pay-n-Pak store.
