In an atmosphere of high emotion at theend of 2008, the two friends assembledat the Eugene Goossens Hall in Sydneyto record much-loved songs of hope, faith and glory, as if in defiance of theglum mood of the times brought on bythe world economic crisis. The sessions were intense and we werevery, very inspired,’ says David Hobson, whose most recent albums The Promiseand A Little Closer have topped the ARIAcharts. ‘This is the album Teddy and Ihave always wanted to make, butbecause of our busy concert andoperatic schedules, it’s taken us literallyyears to find the time.’Right from the first rehearsal, it was clearthat something special was going on.

“We started the session with David andTeddy singing ‘Amazing Grace’ but wedidn’t realise that the studio doors hadbeen left open,” says ABC Classics’Martin Buzacott, the album’s ExecutiveProducer. “When I went out to shut them,I found a passing tradesman standing inthe airlock, spellbound, with tearsstreaming down his face. We knew fromthat moment that this was going to be noordinary album.”

Both artists brought with them their wish-listsof favourite songs, and the result is an albumof music that uplifts the spirit and showcasesthe uncanny beauty of these twomagnificent voices united as one.“It’s an album of great tunes,” says Hobson, whose own suggestions for duets includedthe Welsh classic ‘All Through the Night’and Albert Malotte’s immortal setting of ‘TheLord’s Prayer’. Rhodes nominated the stirringanthem ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’ andan unusual version of ‘Little Drummer Boy’ –as popularised in a duet featuring theimplausible combination of Bing Crosbyand David Bowie.“In most cases we were faithful to theoriginals, but on a couple of tracks we wentfor these kinds of more modern versions,’says Hobson. ‘For instance, we ended uprecording ‘Go Tell It On the Mountain’ in anarrangement inspired by James Taylor!”Hobson’s choices of solo repertoire includedseveral pieces that featured in his headliningconcerts at the Sydney Opera House, which occurred in between the albumsessions. “People often ask me to sing ‘TheHoly City’ and ‘Gounod’s Ave Maria’,” hesays, “so I couldn’t leave them out.”One of the stand-out tracks is Hobson’shaunting take on the American spiritual ‘(IAm a) Poor Wayfaring Stranger’, whichBuzacott remembers encountering on aDusty Springfield television show. “I was achild at the time, and it was the only time Iever heard it, but the beauty of that versionnever left me.” Hobson tracked down thatperformance on YouTube, and arrangerJessica Wells set about recreating itespecially for him to sing on the album.

“David recorded it late at night, and ourproducer Virginia Read, vocal coachSharolyn Kimmorley, and I just sat theresilently in the Control Room with the taperolling, as time stood still,’ Buzacott says.Rhodes too wanted to stretch himselfvocally, taking on repertoire that isnormally associated with very differenttypes of singers. His version of LeonardCohen’s ‘Hallelujah’, accompanied byharp and strings, might be the debut-recording of this most popular song ofmodern times in a performance by abass-baritone, while its chorus capturesRhodes’ falsetto head-voice for the firsttime on disc. But the emotion of the sessions wascaptured most poignantly on the titletrack, the great Richard Rodgers classic‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, which wasrecorded just an hour after Rhodeslearned of the death of his friend andcolleague, the conductor RichardHickox, with whom he’d been workingjust days earlier.“Teddy decided to deal with his grief insong, so he put on the headphones andbegan the opening verse,” recallsBuzacott. “Those first words, ‘When youwalk through a storm, hold your head uphigh, and don’t be afraid of the dark’,had us all in tears. We knewimmediately that they had to become thevery first thing that we hear on thealbum.” Throughout the recording process, conductor Guy Noble proved asympathetic accompanist in charge ofSinfonia Australis. With arranger Wellsalso in attendance, the sessionsproceeded with a sense of discoveryand constant musical evolution, ideasbeing traded back and forth with eachnew take.“We were so ‘in the moment’ and I thinkthat spontaneity and freshness and sheerjoy of singing has been captured on thealbum,” says Hobson, who now sets outwith Rhodes on a national tour in March, performing some of the same repertoirealongside opera classics.“None of us who was involved in it willever forget the experience of recordingthis album, and we hope that audiencesaround the country will be as inspired bythese great songs as we were.”
