Rhinoceros Character Descriptions Character (In order of appearance) Descriptions Grocer Simple character that can be flexible in its portrayal. Generally a helpful and kind character. Grocer’s Wife Obviously married to the Grocer, she helps run the Grocery Store and is generally caring, though a little opinionated perhaps. Another simple character with flexibility in the portrayal of them. Housewife One of the most overly dramatic characters in the play. She is incredibly emotional for 90% of her time on stage and adores her cat. Jean Has a high opinion of himself, which to maintain his status, often points out his best friend’s faults. However, there is a part of him that is genuinely trying to help his friend, Berenger. He is extremely hypocritical and often tries to use his logic to skew a conversation. Berenger The central character to the entire play with only approximately three pages excluding him on stage. Berenger begins the play as a drunkard using alcohol as an escape to his view of the world. He is lazy and finds little worth in life. Though he falls for his co worker, Daisy, which influences him to get sober. He’s incredibly honest and sees no reason to be anyone other than oneself. Berenger is the only character to see the absurdity of those around him. A very likeable character. Waitress Simple character with flexibility of portrayal. She works in the café where the Café Proprietor bosses her around excessively. Logician Speaking almost exclusively in developing or explaining theories or hypotheses, the Logician is both logical and idiotic simultaneously. He develops tangents from several variables in a theory but rarely comes to a conclusion or point. Café Proprietor Has his priorities with himself and his business first. Is harsh on his employees. Old Gentleman Following the Logician religiously, the Old Gentleman attempts to improve his general knowledge by discussing and listening to the Logician’s theories. A generally kind and slow character. Daisy The ultimate girl next door. She has kind and good intentions, but can be ultimately

  • selfish. Her love for Berenger is not as strong or obvious as his for her. A very likeable character for the most part.

    Botard Very arrogant and argumentative. A former teacher and an atheist, Botard never believes he can be wrong. He works at the office along with Berenger.

    Dudard A successful lawyer working at the office also. A generally likable character.

    Mr. Papillion The head of the office, Mr. Papillion is sensible, wise, and calmly brings any chaos to order.

    Mrs. Boeuf Generally well presented and polite character. Mrs. Boeufs husband, who she is deeply in love with and connected to, works at the office.
