Imfolozi 2012 was a wonderfully exciting and challenging experience for everyone in our group (Lauren, Ayesha, Tasneem, Gretchin, Abigail, Ashlynn and Sonia) and our mother-away-from-home, Ms Chambers. We also had two of the best bush-daddies (our guides) ever, Zondi and Mandla M, who entertained us with riddles, interesting stories and info about the bush. After reaching our first camp we enjoyed an exfoliating mud bath in the literally crocodile infested water, and then trundled off to the bush loo armed with fistfuls of leaves, slightly panicked expressions and our soon to be best friend Dug. Instead of the peaceful night under the beau-tiful African sky we had dreamed of, we were treated to the biggest thunderstorm we had ever experienced. It bucketed down solidly for four hours by which time both our packs and ourselves were wet, some of us miserable and others exhilarated by the power of nature.

Then came the dreaded night watch. For those of you who don’t, night watch consists of solo vigil where you are the sole protector of your campsite and if you mess up everyone dies. Although your heart pounds every time you hear the deep grunt of an elephant, you need to remind yourself that it was probably just Sonia snoring...again! After that night’s rain, the next four days were beautifully sunny and we could fully appreciate the animals (rhino, giraffe, hippo, crocs, ele-phant, impala, nyala, kudu, wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, birds and reptiles a plenty), the im-possibly green landscape, yoga on the beach, ice-skating in the mud, freaky looking dung beetles and Sonia brandishing the guides’ rifle at us. This was just a bite size of all our amazing ex-periences. To find out more you will have to wait until next year.

It was a huge eye-opener for the girls of the RGHS Afri-Twin committee to be inside the township and they were quite inspired to see how committed the learners and teachers were. The committee met with the SRC from Mfuleni and had fun discussing similarities and differ-ences of the schools. They also met with Mfuleni’s debating club and we staged an impromptu debate in the library with RGHS supporting the motion that prisoners should lose their right to vote. The day was a lot of fun, connections between the schools were strengthened, and we’re looking forward to do-ing more with Mfuleni.

Earth Children On Sunday the 28th of October girls from the Earth chil-dren society teamed up with the Sacs Interact Society and attended TEARS in Fishhoek. They formed teams and helped to paint the kennels different colours to contribute to a more vibrant environment which helps with the end proc-ess for the adoptees to attend a “happy” place. They also assisted with walking the dogs. It was a successful day and the beginning of many joined projects with Sacs’ interact and hopefully the first of many visits to Tears. We would like to give Jaime Gray (the head of the animal portfolio in Earth Children) a special mention as she organised the visit and the transport. In future we would like to extend this visit to the rest of the school so that everyone can join in on these experiences. Jodi Walker D4

When I asked one of my friends how she felt after modelling in the opening night of Rocking the Run-way Fashion Show held on Fri, 12 Oct 2012 at Canal Walk, she responded rather enthusiastically: “Like I was born to do this. I really wish I could do it again!” and then she smiled the biggest smile I had ever seen. The atmosphere backstage was much the same. Models were bursting with excitement when they got the chance to try on their outfits, sponsored by various clothing stores in Canal Walk. Although this was the first time that Rustenburg had taken part in an event such as this, I think we gave the audience a fantastic night with our very own girls singing and dancing and providing the entertainment to the large crowd surrounding the entire perimeter of the show. The whole event was planned, marketed and choreographed by Rustenburg girls as part of a life skills programme.

It is always sad when something that has caused such excitement and joy amongst friends and family comes to an end, espe-cially an event as special as this. I don’t think that Rocking the Runway is an event that will easily be forgotten – girls are still commending one another in the school corridors and laughing at the funny moments of the evening. Huge thanks to Planet Productions and Canal Walk for allowing us to be a part of this special occasion and to all the girls and teachers involved who made the night an unbelievable success because Rustenburg Girls most definitely Rocked that Runway! Heaven Would Be Our Library!

Captivating, 4- Brilliant read! , 5- Amazing!

The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chobosky, tells the story of Charlie, an introvert who, in his freshman year at high school, is accepted into the circle of the popular crowd by Sam and Patrick. His life changes instantly as he welcomes new and different characters into his previously iso-lated existence. Written in diary form, this book offers a unique insight into the life of a stereotypical introvert. When reading a book that has achieved critical acclaim and major international suc-cess, it is important to read impartially as these accolades often raise expectations that are not always met and lead to disap-pointment. That was my frame of mind when I started to read The Perks of Being a Wall-flower. I expected it to be similar to The Di-ary of a Wimpy Kid, a book which I really didn’t enjoy. I will be honest and say that this book was a real surprise. I didn’t expect to enjoy it but

as the story progressed I found myself thor-oughly absorbed because of the personal manner in which it was narrated… in fact I ended up in deep trouble with one of my teachers for reading it during her class. Charlie is an unusual character but by reading his diary entries I became involved in his story and developed a strange under-standing of him. Stephen Chobosky‘s story really is one of a kind as it deals with so many of the problems that teenagers are often plagued with. I would recommend this book to older read-ers, grade ten and older, because in order to interpret the message of the book properly you need to be able to form mature judge-ments. Kiana recently participated in the main draw (22 players) of the International Tennis Federa-tion tournament which was held in Stellen-bosch. The tournament started on Monday 22 October. She played and lost a tough match in windy conditions against a player form Great Britain. Kiana made it through to the quarter finals of

the doubles tournament. Kiana has also quali-fied for two tournaments: the WP Under-18 Masters Top Eight and Boland Women's Mas-ters Top Eight. Congratulations to Kiana who won the WP Masters Top Eight Under-18 competition this past weekend (27-28 October).
