CANADIAN DREDGE AND DOCK FINDING AID Canadian Drege and Dock was formed in Welland, Ontario to pursue the digging and dredging of the fourth Welland Canal. From its inception in 1915 throught to 1930 this was its sole concern. The completion of the canal in 1930 saw the company with a large fleet of dredges and tugs along with a shipyard to service and build them, located in Kingston. The company began to cast about for other dredging work and busied itself with harbour dredging contracts and related construction such as breakwaters and wharves. Business was fairly consistent throughout the Depression up to the outbreak of war. At this point the government approached the company shipyard for the construction of tugs and badly needed harbour craft; specifically Kingston was to build the Glen class of tugs for the use of the R.C.N.

After the war the company continued with miscellaneous dredging work until the Seaway development began in earnest in 1954. For the five years the fleet was kept at maximum capacity dreding channels, canals, and locks; the Kingston yard was kept busy servicing the sorely taxed fleet. However the halcyon days of the Seaway were not to last. Dredge work fell on hard times as new environmental acts emplaced during the 1960s hamstrung the industry. The company attempted to address the problem through diversification - building wharves, placing pipelines, and towing and salvage but business gradually dwindled. In 1972 the shipyard at Kingston was sold.
