Comparison of Active vs. Passive Tags
Feature Active Tag Passive Tag
Frequency 420-450 Mhz, 63.57 Mhz (Versus) 125Khz, 13.56Mhz, 920-930Mhz, 2.4-5.8Ghz
Typical usage Position tracking, location-based computing, “Aware” systems that canreact to specified physical signals and stimuli
Object identification, process automation,Retail
Typical environment Hospitals and healthcare facilities, Warehouses & Freight managementfacilities, Defense and high-security installations
Retail sales, Warehouse and freightmanagement, Logistics, Manufacturing &Supply chain management, Agriculture
Range 1 - 100 m 2 - 50 cm
Cost Medium, Re-usable for long-term cost recovery Low, but non-reusable tags

Phase Shift Keying
One frequencyChange the phase on the transition between
a 0 to 1 or 1 to 0Faster data rate than FSKNoise immunity
Slightly more difficult to build a reader than FSK

Multiple Tags?
What happens when multiple tags arein range of the transceiver?
All the tags will be excited at the sametime.Makes it very difficult to distinguishbetween the tags.

Collision Avoidance
Similar to network collision avoidanceProbabilistic
Tags return at random times
DeterministicReader searches for specific tags

The optical nature of barcode requires labels to be "seen" by lasers. That line-of-sightbetween
label and reader is often difficult, impractical, or even impossible to achieve in industrialenvironments. In order to function properly, a barcode reader must have clean, clear optics, the label must be clean and free of abrasion, and the reader and label must be properly
oriented with respect to each other. RFID technology enables tag reading from a greater distance, even in harsh environments.
In addition, the information imprinted on a barcode is fixed and cannot be changed. RFIDtags,
on the other hand, have electronic memory similar to what is in your computer or digitalcamera
to store information about the inventory or equipment. This information can be dynamicallyupdated.
The Advantages of RFID over barcode technology:- No line of sight requirement.- The tag can stand a harsh environment.
- Long read range- Portable database Multiple tag read/write.
