Abstract

This paper presents a design of an Automatic Attendance System for students with parent notification sent via GSM

and also storage with database using software. This project uses RFID technology to make a note of every student entering into

the classroom and also to calculate the time resides in the class. In this proposed system, every student is allotted with an RFID

tag. The process of attendance can be done by placing the card near the RFID reader. This paper discusses about what is RFID

technology and attendance system using RFID with an example project. RFID means Radio Frequency identification. It is

wireless identification technique. It is used for smart system that can be used to identify, monitor secure and do object inventory

by the use of radio frequency. It has two components i.e. RFID tag and RFID reader. RFID technology can track movement of

objects through a network of radio-enabled scanning devices over a distance of several meters. A device called RFID tag, or

simply a tag, is a key component of the technology. While entering the class room the students have to mark their attendance

using their RFID cards. RFID reader is the device capable of reading and retrieving information stored inside the RFID tags.

Already the database of the students stored in Arduino with Database. Then the RFID reader transfers the information to

Arduino, it connects with software &database. If the student absents in that class after 10 minutes the SMS send to the parents (It

avoids missing influence). And also, the number of absentees and their Register number store in database, it can easily identify

using software. Using PIR sensor the total present of students can identify. By this project some incidents can easily inform to

their parents.

1. Introduction

Nowadays, in most institution professors take attendance by calling out names or passing a sheet of paper.

So sometimes this process causes errors and also takes more time. For this reason, college needs to create a system to

monitor student’s attendance and report it to their parents automatically. So this project uses RFID technology to

make a note of every student entering into the classroom and also to calculate the time resides in the class. In this

proposed system, every student is allotted with an RFID tag. The process of attendance can be done by placing the

card near the RFID reader.

The system is used to maintain a record of attendance about the pupil. This can be transferred to the parents by GSM

network systems and backend storage. This paper can also help to avoid human involvement in keeping the

attendance record. RFID and GSM based attendance monitoring system aims at removing all these problems and

drawbacks. Thus, reduction of the manpower held in the organization. This machine ensures accurate access control

and record keeping. The attendance system is basically an embedded one. Embedded stands for hardware controlled

by software. Therefore, the system functionality is not only records the student attendance, but also sends alert SMS

to their parents.

2. METHODOLOGY

2.1Arduino UNO board

Arduino is an open source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and

software (called sketch) for IOT or Embedded development. It is intended for artists, designers, hobbyists and

anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments.

Arduino Uno is a board based on ATmega328 microcontroller. It consists of 14 digital input/output pins,

six analogue inputs, a USB connection for programming the on-board microcontroller, power jack, an ICSP header

and a reset button. It is operated with a 16MHz crystal oscillator and contains everything needed to support the

microcontroller. It is very easy to use as the user simply needs to connect it to a computer with a USB cable or

power it with an AC-to-DC adaptor or battery to get started.

3.RFID SYSTEM

RFID Principle

RFID Tag

RFID Reader

3.1 RFID Principle:

RFID: First use of RFID device in 2nd world war-Brittan used RFID like technology for identify- friend or

Foe. That technology uses radio frequency waves to transfer data between a reader and a movable item to identify,

categorized, track. RFID working based on the electromagnetic inductive coupling (i.e.) Transfer of energy from one

circuit to another through a shared magnetic field powers microchip. An unpowered tag is powered intermittently

from a distance by a reader device that broadcast energy to it.

Fig 1: RFID Principle

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is the combination of radio frequency and microchip technologies to create a

smart system that can be used to identify, monitor, secure and do object inventory. At their simplest, RFID systems

use tiny chips called tags that contain and transmit some piece of identifying information to an RFID reader.

3.2 RFID Reader:

The reader also called as interrogator, sends and receives RF data to and from the tag via antenna as RFID

reader contains a copper winding in it, this winding act as an antenna. A typical reader is a device that has one or

more antennas that emit radio waves and receive signals back from the tag. To retrieve the data stored on an RFID

tag, a reader is needed. RFID is used to read or write information on a tag and passing that information to a system

for storage and processing. The RFID Reader emits a low-power radio wave field which is used to power up the tag

so as to pass on any information that is contained on the chip. There are many different versions of RFID that

operate at different radio frequencies.

Fig 2.KHZ RFID Reader

Three primary frequency bands have been allocated for RFID use: • Low Frequency (125/134 KHz) – Most

commonly used for access control and asset tracking. • Mid-Frequency (13.56 MHz) – Used where medium data

rate and read ranges are required. • Ultra High-Frequency (850 MHz to 950 MHz and 2.4 GHz to 2.5 GHz) – offer

the longest read.

3.4 RFID TAG:

RFID Tag is an IC chip that has unique hexadecimal or electronic product code (EPC) contained in it. Here

UNIQUE refers that each and every code word of the tag is independent of other code word. RFID tags are

classified into two types:

• Active RFID Tags are battery powered. i.e. They do not require any external source, they have their own in-built

battery. It can transmit high frequencies so it can be detectable to a longer range.

• Passive RFID Tags do not contain a battery i.e. they don’t have any battery source built in them. Passive tag

contains 13-digit number tag in-built in it. passive tags can transmit information over shorter distances (typically 10

feet or less) than active tags.

Software

The software for this project is written in Arduino programming language. The Arduino UNO is

programmed using Arduino IDE software. Atmega328 on Arduino UNO comes with a boot loader that allows you

to upload new code to itwithout the use of external hardware programmer. It communicates using STK500 protocol.

You can also bypass the boot loader and program the microcontroller through in-circuit serial programming (ICSP)

header, but with boot loader the programming is quick and easy.

Fig 4: Block Diagram

This system consists of automatic attendance system for both students and professor. While entering the class room

both the student and professor have to mark their attendance using their RFID cards. This attendance will be

forwarded to a central computer after processing it through the microcontroller where it will be stored. If a student is

absent in the class then notification will be sent to his/her parents. This system consists of a tag affixed on identity

card to communicate wirelessly with a reader, in order to retrieve the tag ‘s identity. RFID is used to take the

attendance of the student. Student information is stored in the RFID tag and this information is read by the RFID

reader. The Arduino takes input from the RFID reader, processes it and sends it to the professor through wifi module

& GSM for storing the attendance and for sending SMS through the GSM module. Here, we can also use the

microcontroller easily but we are using Arduino. This one is cost effective.

GSM(Global System for Mobile communications) is used to send SMS to student ‘s parents about their

absence in class. GSM SIM 900A is an open, digital cellular technology used for transmitting mobile voice and data

services. GSM operates in the 900MHz and 1.8GHz bands. GSM supports data transfer speeds of up to 9.6 kbps,

allowing the transmission of basic data services such as SMS. This system consists of wifi module RFID Reader,

GSM SIM 300 module, working of the system is discussed below. When students scan the RFID tags to RFID

reader, data will be sent to reader through arduino and it will be send massage. Reader student details and

information is stored in the database. After matching, wifi module sends notification, it will be displayed on

monitor. After 10 minutes, those students are absent, GSM sends the message to parents and professor.

5. CONCLUSION

The proposed system can provide a new, accurate, and less cumbersome way of taking student

attendance in school and shift the paradigm of student‘s lecture attendance monitoring in classroom. A low-cost

RFID Based Attendance System prototype has been successfully developed. The prototype of the system can

provide several benefits over the conventional method of taking attendance. This system will help in automatic

storage of attendance and parents will be notified in case of absence. In this system using the arduino ensures fast

operation, cost effectiveness and low power consumption.
