Comparison Bar Code and RFID Printers
Parameter Bar Code RFID
Tracking Capability
Barcodes can track different product types or
categories uniquely.
RFID can track each item uniquely.
Ease of reading
Bar code which requires direct line of sight
(one at a time).
RFID tags can be easily read or scanned and
it can be done more quickly (upto 40 tags at a
time).
Ease of setup
Barcode needs just the printer and the label. RFID tags involves computerized or
programmed chips to be generated as tags.
Range Barcode scanner has to be in close proximity
of the tag.
RFID tags can be scanned from a longer
range compared to Bar code tags but RFID
tag collision can occur. (two different tags
responding at a same time).
Reusability Bar code labels are easily prone to damage
and hence the ruggedness or reusability is
limited.
RFID is reusable, the information can be
reprogrammed as well.
Orientation
Dependence
Bar codes are highly sensitive to aspect
radio for readability to a bar code scanner.
RFID tags can be the size of postal stamps.
The ratio between a tag’s dimension in length
and width is not a significant factor for the
reader.
Evaluation of Bar Code and RFID Printers
Parameter Bar Code RFID
Speed The reading speed of the barcode is slower
as compared to RFID.
RFID tags can be read at a faster rate than
barcodes; as approximately 40 RFID tags can
be read at the same time.
Cost Effectiveness Bar code is very cost effective since it can be
printed on any piece of paper.
RFID has higher setup costs and recurring
costs.
Marginal Label Cost $0.01 - $0.05 per label (approx). $0.05-$1.00 per tag (approx).
Marginal Device Cost $900 - $1500 per device
Recommended: Zebra QLn420

$1500 - $2000 per device
Recommended: Zebra ZD500R

Evaluation of Bar Code and RFID Printers (Contd.)
OUR ANALYSIS
RFID is suited only when:
• Track lot of inventory items where each item has to be tracked at the individual level.
• Movement of inventory on a daily basis is very high.
• Inventory items usually come in packages or in groups where individual reading or line of
sight of each item is not possible.
• The value of each item justifies the recurring cost and setup costs.
