The groundwork for the group of textile creators in this exhibit began around 2006 with the 4th International Biennial of Textile Art and Design organized in Costa Rica by the Organization of Women in Textile Art, the Costa Rican-North American Cultural Center
and the Spanish Cultural Center in Costa Rica.
In organizing the event, the Costa Rican team realized how critical it was for Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese textile artists to join forces to promote their culture and development, recovering their values, making connections, sharing experiences, systematizing information and making their productions visible to their agents and, indirectly, society, by participating in cultural heritage, educational and textile creation circles. In 2006, then, with the guidance of the European Textile Network and taking advantage of the visit of Ibero-American textile artists and curators to Costa Rica, they
formed the Ibero-American Textile Network.
The first encounter of the Ibero-American Textile Network was held in Costa Rica in 2010. In an effort to impact Costa Rican cultural circles, a series of lectures and eight exhibits in Limon and Cartago as well as San José were held, attracting 23,824 visitors.One of the international visitors was Beatrijs Sterk, General Secretary of the European Textile Netork. Impressed by the quality and diversity of Costa Rican textiles and aware of the need to support this effort,she, in conjunction with Virginija Vitkiene, organizer of the Kaunas Biennial 2011, have made Costa Rica one of the guests of honor at the 20th anniversary celebration of the European Textile Network to be held in Kaunas, Lithuania,
during the last quarter of 2011.

For the 8th KAUNAS BIENNIAL TEXTILE 11 and the 16th European Textile Network Conference to be held in September 2011 in Lithuania, 17 Costa Rican textile artists have been invited to participate in one of the main exhibit rooms of the M.K. Ciurlionis
National Art Museum.
Thus, Costa Rica returns to the international scene of aesthetic textile practices with an artistic production brimming with creative, almost magical, solutions, generating ideas and interests in an effort to achieve a visual oneness utilizing fibers and their potential uses to promote dialogue on the textiles themselves and their potential for best reflecting
the artist’s intention.
Rewind-Play-Forward, the central theme of this grand exhibit, is a practice derived from magnetic tape recordings, which have been replaced by modern audio technologies.
For the Costa Rican participants, chosen from other Costa Rican and international textile events, the steps of Rewind-Play-Forward make up the creative process triggering the magical emergence of textile objects that act as a remembrance of local and personal creative impressions and feelings. This is a sample of the vision of a group of textile artists serving as ambassadors for Costa Rica, seeking a universal voice through their
personal textile processes.

involved in the exhibition’s installation process.
