rewarding your startup employees...on a budget
TRANSCRIPT
Startups though, like in many other situations, face unique challenges when it comes to rewarding their employees.
Write a Personal Note - $1-5
• Find some fancy paper, a nice looking envelope, and write a note by hand
• Writing by hand shows effort and a personal touch that will be appreciated
• Give it meaning, not just a “Thank you”
Give a Personal Gift - $25-50
• Show you know who they are as a person
• Can be related to their activities outside of the office or something to help at work
• Will help strengthen your relationship and prove you’re more than just a Founder
Give a Creative Gift - $25-50
• Give something unique or memorable to really personalize their accomplishment
• Keep it small so they can store it on their desk or somewhere at home
• Will stir a unique emotional response that will be a powerful reminder of achievement
Start Employee of the Month - $0-25
• Put your employees on a pedestal
• Might not be necessarily unique, but has worked for decades
• Couple it with a badge, plaque, or trophy to make the memory last
Give a Mention of Write-Up - $0
• Share accomplishments with your customers
• Include recognition of your employees in your newsletter, blog, and social media accounts
• Give personality to your company at the same time by showing you’re not just a business, but actual people
Throw a Party - $50-100
• Recognize your employees and reward everyone else at the same time
• Spend a few bucks on a cake, drinks, and food to lighten the mood around the startup
• Encourage congratulations and motivate others to step their game up
Go with a Gift Card - $15-25
• Might be regarded as lazy but will still be appreciated by your employees
• Make sure the gift card or certificate is applicable to the lifestyle of the customer receiving it
• Don’t be too frugal on the amount
Startup employees are hard-workers. No doubt about it.
You don’t have to break the bank to let your employees know you care about their top-notch performance though.
Just be personal and meaningful, and you
can keep your top-performers happy.
