An effort to transform the political institutions and the justifications for political authority in society, accompanied by formal or informal mass mobilization and non-institutionalized actions that undermine authorities

Jack Goldstone – political scientist

… involve inquiry into consciousness, values, ideas, and

ideals as they seek to describe how experience shape our

understanding of the world.

A hallmark of humanistic study is that research is approached differently than in the natural and social sciences, where data and hard evidence are required to draw conclusions. Because the human experience cannot be adequately captured by facts and figures alone, humanities research employs methods that are historical, interpretive and analytical in nature.

Humanities researchers

Extracts from Stanford’s Humanities Center website :

Humanities research often involves an individual professor researching in a library in order to write a book.

A scholar might publish research in-progress in an on-line journal to solicit feedback from others in her field.

Whether written for a small academic community or for a broad public audience, humanities research maintains the common purpose of contributing to an on-going dialogue in an area of study. Unlike scientists, humanists are interested in raising questions, rather then providing absolute answers.

Humanities research … often requires alternative methods of investigation. A research project may involve several professors from different universities sharing information in an on-line forum. A professor may collaborate with a colleague in another area of study to gain alternative perspectives on a topic.

Humanities culture:

•Writing books is more prestigious

•Fear that others will steal your ideas/arguments

•Rely on formal (traditional) publication systems

•Paying to publish open access? No money - and no vanity publishing, thanks!

•Uninterested in the dissemination imperative inherent in the university mission

•Tradition of sharing one’s ideas only inside a closed circle of peers – for the sake of the argument rather than the common good

WHY?

Books have traditionally been the stairs leading to tenure, promotion, higher salaries and reduced teaching loads.

Traditional publishers “help” protect copyright. Prestigious publishers are held to be guarantors of quality content.

No sense of potential audiences or interest in cross-disciplinary projects leading to societal impact.

Because faculty rewards and funding are exclusively tied to publication in the traditional journal and monograph vehicles.Humanities have less funding than the sciences.

•Billions of dollars are spent on scientific research every year; only a fraction of that on humanities-based scholarship. “•Paying for publication? Vanity publishing!

Some key conclusions of the study:

• Gold OA is unlikely to play much of a role in HSS disciplines, Green OA is much more feasible

•Readers want access to the Version of Record (VoR) for papers, rather than the Author’s Accepted Manuscript (AAM), and because Green OA compliance is so haphazard. Papers are scattered, hard to find, and because of low compliance, often unavailable, which makes subscriptions necessary.
