The Students had to review what proper nouns were and why we had to capitalize them. We also went over what the definition of a proper noun was.

I used the shutter tool that enabled me to only display one sentence at a time

What is a proper noun?

A name, place, product. Can you think of any others?

After the discussion I called on students to highlight the proper nouns in the sentences using the Promethean pen tool.

Find the proper noun in these sentences and highlight it using the pen.

I live in Provo, Utah.

My best friend is Tommy.

Mom’s birthday is in July.

Provo, Utah

Jill

April.

Next, I made sentences for students that did not have the proper nouns capitalized, so the students used the pencil and eraser tool to correctthe proper nouns.

I finished the lesson by having the students write me a story about themselves, using names of people, places, and any other proper nouns they could think of. I graded them on the ability to capitalize all of their proper nouns.

In my lesson, both the teacher and the students were able to use the board while being engaged in active and passive learning, because they had to give me a thumbs up if they agreed with another student’s answer.

I feel like technology was helpful in this situation, allowing students to see and edit writing together and it did not hinder their learning, as they were expected to write proper nouns by themselves later in the lesson.

I really liked how my lesson went. In terms of the technology, I had no complaint. All of it worked and operated exactly as it should have.

I could have managed the class better than I did. At times I could notice that not every child was involved in my lesson. They use the Promethean Board every day, so I think I should have done a little more to keep all of their attention on my lesson.
