leading private practitioners. As in recent years, all the winners were selected by a joint team composed of TopLegal’s journalists and researchers assisted by a panel of experts of 11 legal and tax in-house specialists drawn from Italian industry and finance. In all, thirty-five prizes were awarded during the evening’s ceremony which was divided into two parts. In the first, prizes were awarded for the individual and deal categories; the second part of the evening was devoted to legal excellence relating to specific practice areas.
The HighlightsAmong the stand-out individual wins, famed rainmaker Francesco Gianni of Gianni Origoni Grippo Cappelli was crowned Lawyer of the Year. The award was Gianni’s fourth: previous wins were in 2008, 2009 and 2013. Co-managing partners Marcello Giustiniani and Stefano Simontacchi of BonelliErede were named Managing Part-ners of the Year. There was also one joint winner which split the jury for the category Emerging Lawyer of the Year (under 35) won by Federico Amoroso of Chiomenti and Vanessa Sobrero of d’Urso Gatti Pavesi Bianchi. Veronica Pinotti of McDermott Will & Emery clinched the award for Italy’s Female Lawyer of the Year. The TopLegal Award for Excellence, which recognizes the contribution of a senior stateman to the legal industry, went to Vittorio Grimaldi, founding partner of Grimaldi. Among the distinguished teams, Gattai Minoli Agostinelli was named Law Firm of Year. The first award instituted for the Notarial Firm of the Year was assigned to Turin-based Ganelli Insabella. The biggest winner of the evening was Gianni Origoni Grippo Cappelli which won a total of three awards, including best law firm in the Competition & EU Law and Banking & Finance categories as well as Lawyer of the Year for its founding partner. Heavyweight rivals Chiomenti won two prizes including for Public Law (contracts, concessions and public services) in addition to the Emerging Lawyer of the Year. Last year, TopLegal introduced an award for the Italian Desk of the Year to take ac-count of the increasing number of transactions completed by law firms without a pres-ence in Italy. This year, the category was split into two to take account of the unique contribution made by independent and international firms to advising Italian clients abroad. The London-based team at Skadden was recognized as the leading inter-national firm while Luxembourg-based Bonn Steichen won in the independent firm category. In the main transactional categories, Pedersoli won the Corporate prize for M&A, while White & Case was honoured for Equity Capital Markets for the second year running. The Banking & Finance team of the year hailed from Gianni Origoni Grippo Cappelli. Clifford Chance earned the accolade for Debt Capital Markets. Finally, Orrick secured an unexpected win after receiving a special prize for its con-tribution to redefining Italian employment law.
