STEP 1: CREATE A RESUME

A resume is a great way to showcase the time you dedicate each year into your other responsibilities & commitments beyond the school day.

To start building a resume in Naviance, complete the following steps:

1. Click on the “About Me Home” tab, then on the blue “Resume” link.

2. You can add new entries in a variety of categories by clicking on the pink plus sign. A drop down menu will appear with all the potential categories.

3. Fill in as many of the resume categories that you can to this point. Stick with activities and experiences you’ve had since the beginning of 9th grade until the present.

4. Continue adding to your resume throughout the rest of your sophomore, junior & senior years. When you start your college applications, you will already have a completed resume!

STEP 2: EXPLORE YOUR INTERESTS: LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF, IDENTIFY POSSIBLE CAREERS, DO YOUR RESEARCH.THE INITIAL STEP OF CAREER PLANNING INVOLVES GETTING TO KNOW YOURSELF BY EXPLORING YOUR VALUES, INTERESTS AND SKILLS.

TAKE ACTION!

o Fill out the “Game Plan” to map out your next steps in your post-secondary search (click on the “About Me Home” tab then scroll down the page to “Game Plan” to begin).

o Answer the questions in the Game Plan survey to the best of your ability to this point. It’s okay if you haven’t thought about the answers to these questions yet – that’s why we’re going through them today!

o Ask us questions if you aren’t sure what they are asking you!

o Click on “Save Changes & I’m Finished” when you’ve completely filled in your answers.

If this activity brings up questions for you and you would like to discuss it with your counselor, please make an individual appointment by either stopping into the counseling office or sending your counselor an e-mail.

STEP 3: GAIN EXPERIENCE AND BE PREPARED College/training is typically very expensive and time-consuming: know what you are getting yourself into by…

❖Thoroughly researching possible careers: Naviance, College Websites, College Board/ACT

❖ Completing a job shadow experience

❖ Attending your PIP meeting with your parents & counselor during junior year.

❖ Reading through the College Planning Guide (available in Naviance and on the counseling website)

❖ Planning your testing schedule (PSAT/SAT/ACT/ASVAB)

❖ Interviewing an adult who holds the position which interests you

❖ Considering an internship during your senior year

❖ Volunteer your time at a related organization

❖ Take the lead on a large project to demonstrate your work ethic, motivation and initiative.

Most importantly: be realistic and confident about your goals and talents. Making tough decisions and standing by your choices are essential life-skills that will aid you both in an out of the workplace!

Put forth your best “you”:

- Choose appropriate coursework connected to your goals

- Develop habits that will be appreciated by future employers

- Dress and behave appropriately wherever you go

- Push yourself to accept and seek out opportunities that may seem scary at first

- Have faith in your own ability to steer the course of your life
