A Study on Evaluation of Effectiveness of an In-service Training (Inset) Course about the

Use of Instructional Technologies and Material Develo!ent

This STUD" aimed to evaluate the effectiveness an INSET course titled “Instructional

Technologies and Material Development” which was provided to 60 primar school in Tra!"on

province in Tur#e$ %ith the #$%&'EM STATEMET which sought to find& '( the e)pectations

of teachers from an effective INSET course on I*T+ ,( The change of teachers- self.perceptions

a!out their master s#ills in instructional technologies and material development during an

INSET course+ and /( the impact of an INSET course which is designed according to teachers-

e)pectations on their perceptions and s#ills$

The MET%D%'%*" used ! the researcher used a com!ination of 1uantitative and

1ualitative approaches to determine the attitudes and perceptions of primar school teachers

a!out INSET course which the attended$ 2egarding the collection of data+ the course was

given to teachers for two wee#s ! su!3ect specialists who wor# at 4aith 4acult of Education at

5aradeni Technical niversit used a semi.structured pre.1uestionnaire at the !eginning of the

INSET with open.ended and close.ended 1uestions 1uantitative and 1ualitative 1uestions to

determine the teachers- attitudes towards instructional technologies and in.service courses

a!out the use of instructional technologies and material development for teaching and learning

purposes and teachers- perceptions a!out the in.service course and their e)pectations from the

course$ There was also a 72E.E89:9TI;N of data then after pre.evaluation *ontent and

method was designed in 7929::E: with teachers- e)pectations$ 9t the end of the course 7ost.

1uestionnaire was given to participants$

In analy,ing the data+ a *;NST9NT *;M7929TI8E MET<;D was emploed$

=uantitative data was anal"ed through using the 1ualitative data analsis methods ,, were

considered for analsis data was logged into SS7S program and comparisons were made

using dependent t.test$ Means was evaluated and from perception 1uestionnaire > dependent

t.test values were calculated in turn at a  ? 0$0@ and 0$0' meaningfulness levels Apre.test and

post.test($

The C%C'USI% of the stud in meaningful differences 1uantitative findings in

primar teachers perceptions a!out the INSET course ma !e related to needs assessment

which is carried out !efore the course ! providing learning ! doing environments rather than

3ust listening to theoretical presentations %ith regards to determining teachers e)pectations

and their readiness !efore an INSET it has a great impact on practice Aapplication( of an

effective INSET course$

$E.'ECTI%/

Numerous INSET course has !een emploed ! different school institutions to fellow

teachers or trainers$ %hile researching for relevant literature a!out INSET I o!served that there

were no as far as I have read instance that an institution that will conduct an INSET as#ed

!eforehand the e)pectations of the participants so to !etter help them engage$ Their perception

a!out INSET that it was 3ust a!out theories and concept which !ore them changed$ <ence

the were more cooperative !ecause the needs and e)pectations that the wrote in the surve

were met$$

9s for this I reali"ed that it is a !rilliant idea to consider the e)pectations of the

participants !efore engaging in proper lectures$ 9!out the content that the perceived to learn I

agree that it will !e more !eneficial for !oth if the contents of INSET will !e tailored !ased on

what the need so to ma)imi"e more the intention of the course$

A C%$$E'ATI%A' STUD" &ET0EE TE TEACE$S1 #E$%$MACE E2A'UATI%

AD STUDETS1 ACADEMIC #E$.%$MACE A3A$ET SC%%'+ S" 4555

The stud aimed to verif the relationship !etween the teachers- performance evaluation

and students- academic performance specificall it is directed towards #nowing the profile of

!oth respondents so that the significant relationship ma !e esta!lished$

The pro!lems that the researcher sought were '( %hat is the teachers- profile in terms

of & performance rating age se) highest educational attainment+ length if serviceB ,( %hat is

the students- profile !ased on the academic averageB /( Is there a significant relationship

!etween the students- academic performance an teachers- performance when grouped

according to& teachers- performance evaluation age length of serviceB

The researcher used a descriptive method then the records were anal"ed and

interpreted to ena!le the researcher find a solution to the pro!lems presented$ In gathering of

data evaluative tools were used to secure valid and su!stantial I formation$ *orrelational

techni1ue was used to o!tain pro)imit of the research and statistical analsis was used to

measure the magnitude of the relationship of the two$ The $esondents were Na"areth-s

students A''6C& '/ preschool+ 6, elementar+ /F6 high school ( and teachers A + ,, preschool

and grade school+ ', high school($ The Instruments used were Teacher-s ;ver.all 7erformance

9ppraisal which was divided into two components+ 60G competence 0G character traits and

attitudes$ Students- Hearl 9verage . grades ever 1uarter divided into four with weight of /0G

for the previous and CG for the current Aclass standing and master test($ Collection of data

was used to verif the claim of the stud and ascertain facts on student.teacher relationship in

terms of performance gathered related documents data ta#en was from the school$ The

9cademic *oordinators and 7rincipal used a performance appraisal form to assess teachers-

competenc and performance !ased on Na"areth School-s criteria earl average of the

students were also collected which was ta#en from the registrar-s office Arandom sampling($ The

su!3ects included& English Mathematics Science and 4ilipino$

To appreciate the magnitude of data gathered and collated the percentage used t.test

was used to test the difference in the teachers- performance rating when grouped according to

varia!les A!etween means( correlation coefficient was used to chec# the relationship of

Teachers- attitude Test Scores and Student Diagnostic and 9cademic 9verage$ SD > o!tained

! a particular group of students that indicated the distri!ution of individual scores in relation to

the mean$ 9nd how close or far apart the students test scores in relation to the mean$

<omogenous Aver close or similar scores( or heterogeneous Aver different or far(

9!out the conclusion there is a correlational relationship !etween the Teachers-

7erformance Evaluation and students- academic performance thus ma#ing the teacher an

Important factor in the development of the student$ Students- academic performance has an

appro)imate homogeneit in terms of earl average there! re3ecting the assumption made$

the 1ualit and the 1uantit of learning the received depends on the input given ! the teacher$

Teachers who are older are !etter and more effective more fle)i!le have a good grasp of the

su!3ect capa!le of predicting students- responses in a given situation$ 9ll null hpothesis were

re3ected$

$E.'ECTI%

In this stud I gained insights that with some evidence the performance of a teacher

reall has factors affecting it li#e the length of service and age$ <owever I disagree that these

two are valid$ %h !ecause I have seen and #nown some teachers who have ac1uired '0.'@

ears !ut stopped themselves from improving thus ma#ing teachers who have shorter

e)perience !etter$ Much to sa the ounger ones are more intense in teaching more energetic

more innovative$$ Though in e)perience #nowing the students- personalit and improvisation

techni1ues I agree that the teachers who have longer e)perience and older are far !etter I

!elieve in some areas ounger are !etter$ :i#e emploing new techni1ues and strategies

stories news related to topics the ounger ones can easil adapt$

7ertaining to some recommendations that the researcher included I agree that teachers

must develop their s#ills with the guidance of the principal and the must have continuous

training so to hone the teaching s#ills and deliver$ 9lso learn more strategies that will help the

teachers$

;ne more thing is that I thin# teachers should undergo !asic counselling and child

pscholog to understand more how a teacher should deal with their students$
