Example: Linear Thermal ExpansionA cylindrical drinking glass is placed inside another cylindrical glass. The two just fit, because the outer radius (0.035 m) of the inside glass is equal to the inner radius of the outside glass. The glass inside is then filled with cold water at 5 °C, while the outside glass is heated to 45 °C by running hot water over it. Find the separation between the two glasses.
Solution:
Given: r01=r02=r0=0.035m Tf1=5 °C, Tf2=45 °C, from Table 12.1 =8.5x10-6 C°-1
Method: inner glass contracts while other glass expands
