J esus’ companionship is embedded in these words: “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you…” These words also assured the disciples of Jesus’ presence in their ministry, strengthened their hearts, and gave

them the confidence to preach the Good News. Jesus’ love intensifies this “companionship.” He said to his disciples: “… whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.” This love of Jesus makes us closer to the Father, it makes us intimate with the Son, and it will make the Advocate (Holy Spirit) be with us always. But what is this love that Jesus wants us to possess? St. Augustine described love like this: “Love has hands to help others; it has feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of others…” That proactive description of love by St. Augustine affirms that God’s language is love. A love that is always creative, building up, forgiving, and confirming. Read this story with the eyes of your heart: There was a boy who was always asking questions. His name was Emmanuel. One day, he asked the question: “What language does God speak?” No one could answer him. Eventually, he set out for distant lands to find the answer. For a long time he had no success. One night he came into a village called Bethlehem, and as there was no room in the local inn, he went outside the village in search for a shelter for the night. He came to a cave and found out, that too, was occupied by a couple and a child. He was about to leave when the young mother spoke, “Welcome, Emmanuel, we have been waiting for you.” He was amazed that the woman knew his name. He was even more amazed when she went on to say, “For a long time, you have been searching the world over to find out what language God speaks. Well, now your journey is over. Tonight you can see with your own eyes what language God speaks. He speaks the language of LOVE - that is expressed in honesty, compassion, respect, hope, and life.” How about you? What language do you speak: LOVE or HATE? Do your hands, your feet, your ears and your eyes do the wonders of Jesus’ love? Your answers are in your hearts.
