Catholic Charities News
The economic impact of the pandemic has in-creased the number of homeless families. Cath-olic Charities provides transitional housing, job skills and budgeting training to people in Mon-mouth county, who have lost their homes. For assistance call 732-922-0400.
Thoughts for July, 2020 Marge Loenser
Happy Birthday United States of America!! Its your 244th birthday! You won the revolution against England; with-stood the horrors of civil war--brothers killing brothers; you freed the slaves! You came through depressions, dust bowls, world wars, plagues, fighting wars in Korea, Vietnam and Iraq. With great sorrow you endured the invasion and thousands of deaths on 9/11, and now you face this Coronavirus pandemic, and so much civil unrest and ri-oting! You keep strong and pray as anarchist groups take advantage of civil injustices and set cities ablaze leaving the disadvantaged worse off than they were. We watch in horror as some politicians stand silent while cities are taken over, properties destroyed and lawless groups try to rewrite history by destroying statues from our past history. Yet we hold fast and know that this democracy can go on if we speak out again against tyranny, and vote out politicians that support such behavior for their own selfish gains and worse ignore or try to rewrite our consti-tution--that brilliant document inspired by great men who were inspired by God Himself!
Lord we lift up our heroes, those that fight against injustice, those that fight for life, for justice for all, for truth and mostly those that fight to bring You, God, back to our schools, all our meeting places--our country. We pray the Rosary each day as Mother Mary instructed and hope only in the Lord, trust only in the Lord!
July celebrates St. Thomas, Saint Maria Goretti, St. Benedict, St. Kateri Tekakwitha, and St. Mary Magdalene to name a few. Great saints all. I personally love St. Kateri, the Lily of the Mohawks, and was privileged to go to her shrine in upstate New York. You might just want to read about her life. I believe she died at age 33.
My dear sisters and brothers, the need to pray is so obvious. Please join me in lifting up victims of this pandemic. We pray for a vaccine. We lift up the elderly locked away from family, the many businesses that struggle to survive and not go under. The critical care workers, all nurses aides and doctors that work tirelessly for victims. Lets not forget those with chronic illness and their caretakers. We pray especially for those suffering with depression. So many turning to drugs and alcohol for relief. Lord send workers into the fields, there is so much be harvested. Remember even a phone call to a shut-in is like giving a cold drink of water to those little ones of Jesus.
“God bless America, land that I love, stand beside her and guide her through the night with the light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans, white with foam . God bless America, my home sweet home, God bless America, my home sweet home!”
We would like to thank all those who have
attended Mass the past few weeks, who
wore a mask and adhered to the social
distancing requirements. We wish to
remind those who are afraid to come to
Mass because of health issues, that the
dispensation from Sunday and Holy Day
obligation will remain in effect until
September 7, 2020.

This weekend, July 4th and 5th, there will be a Special Collection for St. Mark’s Social Concerns Ministry. This
happens each year around this time. Please read the letter below outlining some of the people the Social Con-
cern’s Ministry was able to help because of the generous donations received from the Parishioners at St. Mark’s
Church.
Social Concerns and the Pandemic
Through the generous donations of our parishioners, St. Mark’s Social Concern’s Ministry was well positioned to
provide immediate support to all the emergency appeals made during the pandemic crisis. No one was turned
away. Many found themselves on the verge of homelessness after unexpected job losses. And with the flood of
unemployment applications, expected support payments were delayed for many weeks and in some cases
months. Most people contacting us during this period were desperate for food and shelter. In addition, some
also had unique challenges.
One young couple was at risk of losing their 18-month-old son to DYFS if they couldn’t maintain a roof over their
heads. Another client was struggling with serious health and physical limitations while facing eviction from the
motel they had been staying at. In another case we were able to help a couple in the process of being evicted by
the police late one Saturday evening. So many sad stories!
Fortunately, with Monsignor Flynn’s support and encouragement we were able to help temporarily stabilize the
lives of these and other people in need. We also helped them figure out their longer-term solutions. In some
cases, they were able to secure additional help from family members, while others were able to find new
jobs. We stayed in touch with these people until we were sure they were relatively secure with food and shel-
ter. Keeping communication channels open with our clients seemed to make a big difference during these most
difficult times.
Shelter was secured in nearby motels and Inns. Food was made available from various food pantries in the area
and certain restaurants that distributed free food and, in some cases, complete meals with donations received
from various organizations including our Social Concerns Ministry.
We would especially like to thank Peter Abitanto, without whom, we would not have been able to help as many people in need, as we did. Due to the pandemic, Peter was the only one who was able to meet with them, se-curing their shelter and making sure they had food. Social Concerns is very thankful to have him as a member as well as our Treasurer. Thank you, Peter.
You should all feel good that your donations are making a difference in so many people’s lives. Thank you all for your past support. And your help again with this year’s Social Concerns collection would be most appreciated and put to good use.

July 5,2020—Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 145:1-2, 8-9, 10-11, 13-14
R. (cf. 1) I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
I will extol you, O my God and King,
and I will bless your name forever and ever.
Every day will I bless you,
and I will praise your name forever and ever.
R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
The LORD is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and of great kindness.
The LORD is good to all
and compassionate toward all his works.
R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD,
and let your faithful ones bless you.
Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom
and speak of your might.
R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
The LORD is faithful in all his words
and holy in all his works.
The LORD lifts up all who are falling
and raises up all who are bowed down.
R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
READING 1 ZEC 9:9-10
Thus says the LORD:
Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion,
shout for joy, O daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king shall come to you;
a just savior is he,
meek, and riding on an ass,
on a colt, the foal of an ass.
He shall banish the chariot from Ephraim,
and the horse from Jerusalem;
the warrior’s bow shall be banished,
and he shall proclaim peace to the nations.
His dominion shall be from sea to sea,
and from the River to the ends of the earth.

READING 2 ROM 8:9, 11-13
Brothers and sisters: You are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you. Consequently, brothers and sisters, we are not debtors to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
ALLELUIA CF. MT 11:25
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth;
you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL MT 11:25-30
At that time Jesus exclaimed: “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.” “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am meek and humble of heart;
and you will find rest for yourselves.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

An Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
