Dear church family and friends,
One of our greatest desires is to see God.
We all want to experience Him, to know that
He is real and to know that Someone hears,
cares, and responds back to us. As Augustine
once said about God, “Our hearts are restless
until they rest in Thee.”
My current sermon series, “Looking for God”, speaks to how
we can see and hear from God. The first way is answered
prayer. We get a clear sense of “yes”, “no”, or “wait” in
response to our prayers. Take a moment to reflect on
answered prayers.
A second way is unexpected signs of God’s love. This is
experienced when we receive encouragement at just the
right time. It could be a phone call, text or Facebook
message, e-mail, spoken word, hug, or an act of kindness.
Packed into a small act or gesture is the boundless
love of God that touches our hearts far beyond our
imagination. One such act can change the whole direction of
our day. How have you have experienced God in this way?
Also, how might God use us to show His love to someone
else who needs it? It may take you only a few moments or
minutes, but the effects are immeasurable. Make a list of three
or four people you could encourage (and help them to see
God).
Next week, we will look at how God supplies power to do
His work. The final message will be about how we see God
through His timing.
God sightings...may God grant us eyes to see and ears to
hear Him.
Love, Pastor Mike

WEDNESDAY NIGHT ACTIVITIES
This Wednesday, August 26th: Dinner will begin at 6; Bible
Study for children at 6:45; Annual Meeting at 7; Sanctuary
Choir rehearsal at 7:50. We will begin our 6 week studies on
September 2 for adults at 6:45. Plan to join us and invite a
friend!
The studies offered this session for adults:
“Praying for Your Adult Children”
Taught by Terry Winters. Concerns for our children continue
long after children move out. Parents cannot protect children
from life. The best thing to do is to intentionally, consistently
release them into God’s loving care. This is a great time to
pray with and for one another.
“Spiritual Gifts”
Taught by Mark Clark. This important subject is greatly
misunderstood. Gain a deeper Biblical understanding to help
you see your part and how that coordinates with others in
God’s greater plan.
Exodus: “Liberated for Life in Covenant with God.”
Taught by Pastor Mike. “Exodus” is for everyone, the story of
all of us. It is the journey away from things that weigh us
down, hold us captive, and into freedom and forgiveness as
we follow God. He walks with us and supplies our need as we
face each obstacle along the way.
WAR ROOM We are reserving tickets to see the new movie, War Room,
for Sunday, August 30. If you are interested in tickets for
yourself, friends, family, neighbors, please sign up and
pay by Wednesday, August 26. The cost is $7.50 per
person which includes your ticket, drink and popcorn. You
will need to be at the theater by 6:20 pm on Sunday.
This is an awesome outreach opportunity for all of us! Buy an
extra ticket and invite someone to come with you!
Below is a brief synopsis of the movie and you can view the
movie trailer at www.warroomthemovie.com. Blessings, Leigh
“War Room” follows Tony and Elizabeth Jordan, a middle-
class couple who appear to have it all — good jobs, a
daughter and their dream home. In reality, the Jordan
marriage has become a war zone and their daughter is
collateral damage. With the help of Miss Clara, an older, wiser
woman, Elizabeth discovers she can start fighting for her
family instead of against them.
Love and Sympathy We express our deepest love and sympathy to Irene Black at
the loss of her grandson, Anthony Lobiondo on Saturday.
Please keep his family and all of his friends in your prayers.

From Leigh
YOUTH: WOW! What an awesome start to the new year. We had 13 youth for dinner and Bible study last night. I
was pleased at the new junior youth who joined us and with the senior youth who invited friends to join. Looking
forward to a great year of learning and growing together in Christ. I am especially thankful for the leadership and
friendship of Mark Collins. Continue to pray for this important ministry of WBC.
WAR ROOM—Next Sunday, the youth will meet at 5 pm. We will go to Taco Bell for dinner and then to see the
movie, War Room. You will need $7.50 for the movie. If possible, let Leigh know in advance if you plan to attend.
ROCKIN’ THE SMOKIES, SEPTEMBER 5:
The cost for the trip is $45 (please give this to Leigh by ASAP). You will also need money for meals (lunch and dinner at Dolly-
wood; lunch on Sunday). We will leave at 6:30 am on the 5th and should return before dinner on the 6th. Wear comfortable
clothes and shoes for the park. On Sunday, we will have a time of worship, do some hiking, and possibly go to the outlet
stores (if we have time). Be sure to pack your Bible and toiletry items. I will have permission slips available this week for every-
one to fill out.
I was recently asked to join a group called the Southwest Virginia Long Term Recovery Coalition. Basically, it is a group of people from our area who are interested and able to help residents who were affected by the snow, ice, flood event this past winter. Over 400 families suffered damage to their homes. Some of those people have insurance or other means of paying for repairs, many more don’t.
My role is Volunteer Coordinator. I was asked to serve in this capacity because of my role as leader for the WBC mission trips. A lot of people know of the impact our trips have had on the our church, our community, and the areas we have served. So, I was asked and I said “yes”.
Our first group of volunteers arrived Sunday evening! The group is led by Pastor Karl Jones, United Church of Christ, Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania. This group will work on three homes this week to repair and replace roofs that were damaged in the storm. Karl and team will join us at WBC for dinner on Wednesday evening.
Team Rubicon will arrive in October to tarp homes with damaged roofs until they can be repaired next Spring.
It has been a tremendous amount of work to get something like this started...forming an executive committee, by-laws, training, grant writing, etc. But, we have made great progress. I am working with some amazing people who have a passion for helping those in need. If you are interested in knowing more, please stop by and see me or give me a call. There are plenty of opportunities!
I am praying for all of you this week. Pray for each other, too.
Blessings, Leigh

COLLEGE ADDRESSES
Parents, please let us know the mailing address of your college
student so that our church family can keep in touch with them
throughout the school year! Call or email the church office.
INVITATION: The sanctuary choir is always seeking new members—no audition required! We rehearse on Wednesdays at 7:50 pm. Prayerfully consider joining our “merry band of musicians” for wonderful fellowship and service.
Also consider joining us for the annual Christmas Cantata. We will begin working on that music very soon. The date of the program is December 6.
Quilting Ladies Trip
The bus pulled out last Tuesday at 9 am heading for Historic
Jonesborough, TN. There were 17 of us total. Despite the rainy
weather, we enjoyed a day of shopping, food, fun and fellowship. It
was an honor to be included in their special day. If you’re looking for
a place to serve, have fun, build wonderful relationships, and create
beautiful quilts—this is the place to be on Mondays! Contact Grace
Allio for more information. Blessings, Leigh
