From Fr. JC Maximilian’s Desk “Sacraments of Healing: Anointing of the Sick”

Recently my niece, Sydney, had to have surgery (she is fine). The day before she was speaking with my mother and Mom asked her if she had told Fr. Paul, Sydney’s pastor, and gotten a blessing. Sydney called Fr. Paul and he told her to stop by the parish office and he would be happy to bless her. So Sydney, after going to the

gym and picking up her daughter, stopped to see Fr. Paul. As he was anointing her, Sydney asked, “Am I getting a sacrament?” Fr. Paul told her she was indeed receiving the Anointing of the Sick. Sydney said, “But I thought that was only for people who are dying?” Sydney is not alone in her misunderstanding of the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. Due to an unfortunate translation of the Latin title, many people think of it as “Last Rites.” While among the prayers of the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, there are some for those for whom death is imminent, the sacrament is for anyone who is suffering a serious illness or injury. “By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. And indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1499). Illness and suffering has been a trial for human beings since the Fall. When we are ill we experience our powerlessness, our limitations, our finitude, and when seriously ill, we might even glimpse our eventual death. Often when we are sick we can feel isolated and alone. But we are never alone. During his public ministry, Jesus healed many people of their illnesses and sufferings. He allowed the sick to touch him, and he touched them. “Christ invites his disciples to follow him by taking up their cross in their turn. By following him they acquire a new outlook on illness and the sick. Jesus associates them with his own life of poverty and service. He makes them share in his ministry of compassion and healing” (CCC #1506). “The apostolic Church has its own rite for the sick, attested to by St. James: ‘Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders [presbyters] of the Church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.’ Tradition has recognized in this rite one of the seven sacraments” (CCC #1510). The sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is for anyone who is seriously ill, which the Church defines as anyone who begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age. Because one of the effects of Anointing is the forgiveness of sins, only a priest may administer the sacrament. During the rite of Anointing, the sick person is given the opportunity to receive the sacrament of Penance, then Scripture is read. The oil is then prayed over, and then the priest anoints the sick person on their forehead and the palms of their hands, saying, “Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up.” One interesting note, is since a priest has his palms anointed with Chrism at his ordination, when he receives the Anointing of the Sick, the back of his hands are anointed, not his palms. There are several effects of the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. The first grace of this sacrament is one of strengthening, peace and courage to overcome the difficulties that go with the condition of serious illness or the frailty of old age, which is a special gift of the Holy Spirit. By the grace of this sacrament the sick person receives the strength and the gift of uniting themself more closely to Christ’s Passion. The sick person, by freely and willingly receiving the sacrament, contribute to the good of God’s people. Finally, the Anointing of the Sick completes our conformity to the death and Resurrection of Christ, just as Baptism began it.

Resurrection Parish Religious Education Program KIDS SPORTS IN OUR CULTURE

I remember playing sports growing up. Every day after school my friends and I would be in someone’s backyard playing football or baseball. Or, we would be in someone’s driveway playing basketball. Or, we would be in the street playing street hockey (or occasionally stick ball). Sometimes we would play cops and robbers, games or anything we could think of. It was something my friends and I looked forward to everyday. Often, games from recess would be continued after school when we came together. Sports were leisure and recreation. It was important for me to get energy out after sitting down all day in school and before I had to sit down to do homework (I probably would have done much better at a Montessori school – hands on learning without having to sit down and no homework). Today, however, most kids are in extra-curricular activities organized, time consuming and, in the case of sports, often win-at-all-cost. Spontaneity and creativity are lost. Fun and leisure are replaced with discipline, rigidity and high intensity. Even worse, backyards and neighborhoods are often empty. Parents no longer hear the sound of kids playing in the neighborhood. This cultural change has far reaching ramifications that not only impact us now, but future generations. Organized extra-curricular activities such as sports, has become a “god” to many. There is an addictive appeal to winning (and doing anything in one’s power to win). The true beauty and value of sports has been lost. With a win-at-all-cost mentality sports no longer builds character and virtue as it could. Sports now builds competitiveness, vainglory, pride and more that can be classified as vice rather than virtue. The process is overtaken by the results. When you focus on the process, kids learn basic fundamentals, proper techniques and systems. They also learn hard work, effort, respect for opponents and referees, discipline and sacrifice that can be applied to other areas of their life. In short, kids learn virtue with a properly focused sports program. However, even if a coach and team focus on the process, the values can be easily lost if it is viewed as more than leisure and entertainment. G.K. Chesterton once said, “When sports and entertainment become an industry in a

country, that country will collapse.” Well, it’s safe to say sports and entertainment are an industry in the United States of America. The collapse Chesterton was talking about is an internal, moral decay that makes people lazy and susceptible to foreign occupation or internal collapse among other things. If a coach and team were to focus on the results rather than the process, then the values that sports can generate to a community are completely lost. Sports, in fact, become more harmful to that community. When one becomes ultra-competitive, he/she will carry that over to other areas of their life. They will be the person nobody wants to work with, the spouse nobody wants to remain with, the father/mother nobody wants to talk to. The win-at-all-cost mentality would permeate every discussion and decision-making conversation that takes place at work or at home. This type of person can ruin businesses and families. A doctor recently told me that future professional athletes will be younger and retire earlier because of soft tissue injuries that occur with intense game play happening in most sports today. He said that soft tissue injuries are occurring at an alarming rate today. According to this doctor the reason for this is competitive sports, especially the competitive, all-out play of sports found in travel teams and tournaments. The ironic piece is the more you win, the more you crave winning. Winning doesn’t take away the addiction to be successful. Howie Roseman said at the Eagles Super Bowl parade in 2018, “This is just the start. We are going to win another.” Winning doesn’t satisfy our deepest longings.

So, how do we change a culture that is thirsting for success, but will never quench that thirst? Change our mind-sets about what priorities are most important. Faith, family, intellectual life than sports and social life should be the proper order. This can only happen in each family. Parents need to make faith and family life more important than sports and entertainment. When thy do, our culture will change for the better.

Liturgical Adaptation In light of the cold and flu season, and considering the concern over communicable diseases, we encourage you not to come to Mass if you are not feeling well or showing signs of the flu. Communion from the Cup has been omitted from Mass until Spring to help alleviate the possibility of transferring illness. Additionally, to diminish the possibility of catching and/or transmitting colds and flu, we encourage you not to hold hands during the Our Father and suggest we share the Sign of Peace with one another with meaningful eye contact, a smile, and a bow of your head to one another. From the Pastor’s Desk

Next weekend is Pledge Sunday for the Annual Catholic Appeal throughout the Diocese of Trenton. Each year the Bishop seeks the support of all the members of the diocese to further the work of our ministries. Each of us has a vital

part in all we do in Christ’s name, and each of us can share in all we do with a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Our single Act of Faith propels the works of love that build up our Church. You make that happen with a generous gift to the ACA.

This year, Resurrection Parish’s share of the goal is $60,000. As the people of the Diocese of Trenton, you have an opportunity to help others see Christ working in our midst. I ask you to take a moment and truly reflect on any help you can give. We truly need everyone to participate. This year we again are striving to reach our goal of $7 million. I am always grateful and moved by the level of support you give to our parish. I thank you for this support, and may God continue to bless you and your family.

Respect Life As a pro-life people, our hearts ache for the millions of babies lost to abortion. However, little is heard about the tremendous emotional pain, regret and crippling remorse that many women and men experience following an abortion. These parents are also victims of a culture of death. They suffer a traumatic wound, with consequences that can last a lifetime. As a pro-life people, our hearts ache for them, too. Rachel’s Vineyard is a weekend retreat that offers these wounded parents an opportunity to walk with Christ through the complex circumstances that led to abortion, as well as the devastating aftermath. Rachel's Vineyard also provides a

blessed opportunity for parents to begin processing their grief, and to memorialize their children. There is no judgment. There is just an atmosphere of fellowship, compassion, and healing. If an abortion is impacting you, remember that God loves you, just as much as He loves your child. If you would like to experience a weekend of God's love and mercy for yourself, please contact Judy Warenkiewicz at 732-536-6871. All inquiries are strictly confidential. The next Rachel’s Vineyard retreats are: February 28, 2020 – March 1, 2020 and August 28, 2020 –August 30, 2020.
