7:00pm MASS , FOLLOWED BY NOVENA Novena. A novena is a series of prayers that are said for nine straight days, usually as a prayer of petition but sometimes as a prayer of thanksgiving. The nine days recall the nine days that the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary spent in prayer between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday. While the word novena comes from the Latin novem, meaning "nine," the term has also come to be used generically to refer to any lengthy series of prayers.
6:00-7:00PM ADORATION
Blessed Sacrament is exposed and adored by the faithful. Adoration is a sign of devotion to and worship of Jesus Christ, who is present Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, in the Blessed Host. Eucharistic adoration, meditation are more than merely looking at the Blessed Host, but are believed to be a continuation of what was celebrated in the Eucharist.
6:00pm CONFESSION That reconciling of man to God is the purpose of Confession. When we sin, we deprive ourselves of God’s grace. And by doing so, we make it even easier to sin some more. The only way out of this downward cycle is to acknowledge our sins, to repent of them, and to ask God’s forgiveness. Then, in the Sacrament of Confession, grace can be restored to our souls, and we can once again resist sin. Three things are required of a penitent in order to receive the sacrament worthily: must be contrite—or, in other words, sorry for his sins. must confess those sins fully, in kind and in number. must be willing to do penance, make amends for sins. ---- Father Joseph will be available for confession 6-6:45pm
6:00pm ROSARY Rosary is a Scripture-based prayer. It begins with the Apostles' Creed, which summarizes
the great mysteries of the Catholic faith. The Our Father, which introduces each mystery, is from the
Gospels. The first part of the Hail Mary is the angel's words announcing Christ's birth and Elizabeth's
greeting to Mary. St. Pius V officially added the second part of the Hail Mary. The Mysteries of the Rosary
center on events of Christ's life. Five sets of Mysteries: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and the Luminous. The
repetition in Rosary is meant to lead one into restful and contemplative prayer related to each Mystery.
The gentle repetition of words helps us to enter into the silence of our hearts, where Christ's spirit dwells.
6:45pm SOLEMN BENEDICTION Blessed Sacrament exposed upon altar in a monstrance, surrounded with
lights. At the end, priest, his shoulders enveloped in a humeral veil, takes monstrance into hands and with
it makes the sign of the cross (hence the name Benediction) in silence over the kneeling congregation.
Sacrament of Baptism Parents should contact Father Joseph to make arrangements for the celebration of this sacrament. A preparation session is required for first-time parents. Sacrament of Reconciliation and Penance Celebrated on Saturdays from 4:00-4:45pm; Wednesdays from 6:00-6:45pm. Also make an appointment by calling the rectory. Sacrament of Marriage Engaged couples should contact Father Joseph at least six months prior to the desired wedding date. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick Individual reception of the sacrament can be arranged by contacting Father Joseph. Anyone who is anticipating surgery is encouraged to request this sacrament prior to entering the hospital.

OBSTACLES
The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today’s
scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy
to the Israelites, who are “hard of face and obstinate of heart” (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how
he has been given a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform
many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that “[he] was amazed at their lack of faith”
(Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often
we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to
Saint Paul encourage us today: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power
is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — They shall know that a prophet has been among them (Ezekiel 2:2-5). Psalm — Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy (Psalm 123). Second Reading — I am content with weaknesses and hardships for the sake of Christ (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). Gospel — The people said: “Where did this man get all this? Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary?” (Mark 6:1-6).
The PRESENT is the only time you have to merit Heaven and escape Hell. The PAST you cannot recall, and of the FUTURE, you are not sure. Be sure to use the present well and decide daily whether you wish to be in Heaven or in Hell. ------ Baltimore Catechism No. 4, #421

Treasures from our Tradition
“Nuns of the Battlefield,” were religious sisters
from several communities who served as nurses
in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only
instituted female nurses a decade before in the
Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to
wounded soldiers was extraordinary. Medical
and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were
appalling, and sisters were nearly all teachers.
Few had any medical training beyond what
they had learned as youngsters in the family.
Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply
entrenched in America that sisters could not
wear their habits in public. These sisters were the
first, and people on both the Union and
Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their
bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant
soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from
twenty-one communities went to war, serving in
wretched conditions. They were tough and
single-minded, efficient and fearless.
After the war, sisters could appear in public
everywhere in the reunited nation, and often
received the praise and gratitude of grateful
soldiers and family members on behalf of their
sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the “Nuns
of the Battlefield” stands in Washington at M
Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription
reads: “They comforted the dying, nursed the
wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave
in His name a drink of water to the thirsty.”
