St. John Bosco: ordained in Turin, Italy; served as chaplain in a hospice for working girls; opened Oratory of St. Francis de Sales for boys; later founded the Salesian Order dedicated to education and mission work.
The Presentation of the Lord: in accordance with Law of Moses, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple to make required offering forty days after his birth.
St. Blasé; martyred for refusing to renounce his Catholic faith; priests usually bless throats on this day because, reportedly a physician, healed many ailments of the throat.
St. Ansgar: missionary to Denmark and Sweden; bishop of Hamburg; was a great preacher and administrator; known as the “Apostle of the North”; patron of Denmark, Germany, Iceland.
THE CHOSEN REMNANT • Zephaniah is one of the least-known of the Old Testament prophets. He
speaks in today’s first reading of impending judgment. But the Lord will leave a “remnant” in Israel.
This image of a remnant, or remainder, was to become vital to both Judaism and Christianity.
• Paul’s letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep concern for the Christians there. They are too self-
confident, he says, too sure of themselves. He admonishes them to remember that Christ has given
them all they have. • Today’s Gospel comprises the opening of Jesus’ “Great Sermon.” As God
gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside to teach them the new
law. Each of these Beatitudes contrasts the humiliation of the present with the glory of the future:
poverty vs. the riches of God’s kingdom, hunger for holiness vs. fulfillment
in the Spirit, persecution vs. the reign of God. Jesus is here speaking to
God’s chosen “remnant.”
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — You humble of the land, seek justice and humility, and the Lord will be your protection (Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13). Psalm — Blessed are the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs! (Psalm 146). Second Reading — God chose the weak of the world, those who count for nothing, so that whoever boasts should boast in the Lord (1 Corinthians 1:26-31). Gospel — Jesus taught from the mountain: Blessed are the poor in spirit (Matthew 5:1-12a).

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
Please pray for our catechumens: Brianna Downs,
and Josh Smith; and our candidates: Lisa Pearl and
Jason Roth as they continue their journey in our RCIA
program here at Our Lady of Peace Parish.
A candidate is someone who has been previously baptized in another Christian faith. At the Easter Vigil, candidates make a profession of faith, are confirmed, and receive the Eucharist.
Catechumens are those individuals who have never been officially initiated into a church community prior to their entrance into the Catholic Church. At the Easter Vigil, catechumens celebrate all three Sacraments of Christian Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Another way we state this is to say that catechumens are seeking full communion with the Church.

Schola Cantorum Franciscana Choir Saturday 5:00pm Mass - February 11
The Schola Cantorum Franciscana, under the
direction of Professor Nicholas Will, is an elite
25-voice liturgical choir comprised of students of
Franciscan University of Steubenville as well as
members of the wider community. As an
integral part of the university’s Sacred Music
Program, the Schola performs the best of the
Church’s musical patrimony primarily within its
intended liturgical context. While the group’s
repertoire spans the breadth of the Catholic-
Christian musical tradition, its specialization lies
in music of the Renaissance, Baroque, and
Twentieth Century. Schola sings for a monthly
Missa Cantata (Extraordinary Form) at the
Franciscan University’s Christ the King Chapel as
well as numerous concerts and liturgies each
semester both on campus and throughout the
tri-state region. Music of the Mass will include
chant and English and American choral works.
