On the eve of the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation it is an opportune time to explore this movement's impact both on our faith and our life together as a Lutheran church in Escondido. We will dive into the topic through the June 10th presentation (9-12 pm) when Pastor Bill and I give an historical overview of the Reformation, and look at the challenges and opportunities that face the larger Christian church today. I will also present a series of newsletter articles addressing key points of our faith and how we might apply them in our daily living.

This month, we begin with a fundamental idea that shapes not only every sermon, but the way we read the Bible: law and gospel. If you have ever read the first books of the Bible, particularly Leviticus and Numbers, you will notice that God gives a lot of laws! Everything from how you dress, to how you grieve, to what you eat is regulated through 613 Jewish laws or commandments. Thankfully, as Christians, we do not have to follow every one of these laws to be right with God. Jesus even says in Matthew 5:17 that he is the fulfillment of the law—so our faith does not tend to be as law-oriented as observant Jews. Instead we as Christians, and particularly, as Lutherans emphasize the "Good News" of Jesus Christ, the Gospel.

For Martin Luther, the right reading of the Gospel of Jesus was imperative to having faith. Hearing God's Word of grace, of the unconditional love of God for each of us, breaks the bondage of our sins and frees us to believe in Christ. You might think of "sin" as selfishness, which essentially turns us away from God and ultimately, life itself. Only God's love through Christ can turn us back towards God, the true purpose of the Gospel.

This idea makes perfect sense to anyone who has followed a 12-step program where one is asked to turn towards a higher-power in order to help move beyond self-oriented destructive patterns. There is real power in God's love, and it is in such power that one can begin to address the laws and relationships we have broken or ignored. Importantly, the gospel does not remove the realities of our trespasses on other people and on God. Rather, the gospel literally joins us with Christ as he is crucified and resurrected. Once we find ourselves caught in this unfathomable love, we can in faith truly appreciate our current circumstances of being convicted by the "law" and at the same time transformed by the "gospel." This allows us to deal rightly with people—to ask forgiveness and to freely forgive, including ourselves.

Therefore, we need a steady diet of both law and gospel in sermons and in life. As simultaneously both sinner and saint we still need laws to deal rightly with people and to remind us who saved us in the first place. We therefore need to listen to the Bible when it reminds us "to love our neighbor" or "honor our parents." We still need to hear the Law. At the same time, we must hear the Gospel of God's love for us. This is true freedom for we are not simply captive to sin, but are in faith free to love our God and to love each other.

God Bless, Pastor Daren

There are several fun things to talk about this month…

First, the Prayer House Ringers enjoyed another successful Spring Ring last month. It was

great fun to par#cipate with over 100 other hand bell ringers from Southern California! Thank

you to all of you who a(ended the a)ernoon concert. I believe House of Prayer had the

largest group of supporters there, again. You rock!

I also want to commend the 4 new hand bell ringers that joined us this year. Lisa, Tabitha,

Chris, and Henry, thank you for being so brave and trus#ng as you entered a new realm of

music! You are awesome!

Next, this month we are con#nuing our tradi#on of having a summer men’s choir. Men,

please join us for one rehearsal on Wednesday, June 14 at 7:00 PM. We will be singing in

services on Sunday, June 18. No musical experience is necessary. All men of HOP are

welcome to join us, and bring a friend if you’d like. We always have a good #me!

Ladies, mark your calendars … your turn will be August 23 & 27.

Summer is an opportunity for people within our congrega#on to share their individual

or small group musical gi)s during our worship services. There is room on the

schedule for anyone interested in par#cipa#ng. Please let me know as soon as

possible if you are interested.

I am looking forward to a fun VBS on June 21-23. Music prac#ce has already begun, and it is

fantas#c! This “Camp Out” will be spirit filled and joyous! (And I love smores!!)

Finally, I would like to again say THANK YOU to all the ringers and singers who volunteer

so much #me to make our worship experience a beau#ful one! Please enjoy your

summer #me off and come back fresh in the fall. For anyone who has been

considering joining the hand bells or the choir, please watch the Tidings for our

schedule in the fall. There is plenty of room and we love having new members!

Blessings!

Carol

The Great Reformation of the Church; Then and Now June 10 at House of Prayer

On Saturday June 10 (9AM to Noon) we at House of Prayer Lutheran Church will offer a lively presentation about the reformation of the church; then and now. Celebrating 500 years of reform, learn how the church has changed and how it continues to change. Learn about the Lutheran contribution to the whole Christian Church and our hope for the future.

The program will be presented by the Rev. Dr. Daren Erisman, our senior pastor and noted church scholar and the Rev. Dr. William Dopp, retired pastor, author and expert on the church in the developing world.

Nearly 500 years ago the great reformer, Martin Luther, tacked his 95 Thesis on the door of the Castle Church at Wittenberg, Germany: the reformation began. Explore the events leading up to Luther’s reforms and discover the changing church of today. Learn how the church has been reformed in the past and how it continues to be changed, particularly in the developing world.

The program, The Great Reformation of the Church, Then and Now is open to all. Invite a friend.

Call to register at : (760) 745-3738. A suggested donation for materials is $5.00 and may be paid at the door.

There are also sign up sheets in the Narthex

COUNCIL NEWS – JUNE 2017

Our May council meeting on the 16th went well. As usual we started with a devotion, approval of previous minutes and the treasurer’s report. Over all we are where we should be budget-wise and have not yet had to tap the Endowment General Fund but will likely do so sometime in June. Kudos to you all for the financial support!!!

The new directory is now starting to become a reality. We will be using most of the Dan Engelbrecht snapped pictures as a starting point. It is looking like we will have a directory that will be in a format that looks like a Sunday bulletin. This will work well and we can have “no photo available” placeholders for pictures not yet submitted. We will be contacting everyone regarding information that should or should not be listed and for desired portraits. Since this will be electronic and kept on an office computer it will most certainly be up to date most of the time and can be printed on demand. We shall see how this works. Some folks don’t mind the professional photographers but if you are like me you can do without the hard sell to buy their products.

There may be a Holy Land group trip in the upcoming year or so, maybe around January 2018. It is envisioned to be around $3600/person and be for about 12 days. Please let pastor Daren know if you are interested.

We are considering having an adult confirmation class. That was the avenue where I was confirmed at about age 46. Seems like decades ago though, and I cherish that it was made available to me. Please let Pastor Daren know if you are interested in that as well.

From the Youth and Christian Ed some upcoming events:

6,21-23 VBS

6/27 Universal Studios Harry Potter World (HS/Coll)

6/28-7/2 Western States gathering (HS)

7/16-22 Confirmation Camp at Luther Glen (MS)

Have a blessed month! Mike Kendall

SYNOD ASSEMBLY MAY 2017

The 30th annual Pacifica Synod assembly was held on the 11th thru 13th of May in Mission Valley. There were over

300 voting members present. Cheri and I were the two lay persons representing House of Prayer. Of course, Pastor

Daren was present also. It really was like one of our own council meetings and we conducted a lot of business. The

Synod had mandatory changes to its constitution based on directives from the 2016 ELCA churchwide assembly and

we voted to adopt these. We also voted in a slate of personnel to fill Synod council positions, voted for the Synod

annual budget, voted for 2% pay raises for the Synod staff and sadly voted for a resolution exempting the Hawaiian

conference from a requirement to hold the Synod assembly for the foreseeable future. We also attended two

services, one of which was at a United Methodist Church just off Texas St. The sanctuary there was acoustically

amazing as well as aesthetically most interesting. We listened to a variety of speakers, most had some sort of plea

for ‘cause’ support either for fundraising or volunteer time. Many were directed toward hunger. There is a church

on 3rd Avenue in downtown San Diego doing a great outreach service feeding people. They go by the acronym

TACO. We heard several personal testimonies, many of which were related to LGBT issues. Another story revolved

around wounded warrior outreach in Kaneohe – stat: ZERO suicides in the last 6 years, amazing. Yet another story

related one church’s picking up stakes and moving 6 miles down the road to be part of a tri-faith initiative where a

mosque, a synagogue and a Christian church will locate to a common campus on the site of a former Jewish only

member golf course. Sometimes you wonder about some decisions. The Christian church is losing about 100

families resulting from the decision to move, representing probably about a third of their congregation. Interesting.

I personally attended two workshops - one dealing with “non-profit” organizational issues and the other dealing with

facility issues. Like a good Lutheran I ate several times and drank loads of coffee and I prayed a lot. Met many new

friends and ran across a few old friends. It was a great experience. I would encourage anyone who has not done so

to give it a whirl. Next year it will be held up in Palm Desert at a very large church and will only be a two-day affair

vice three.

Peace out!

Mike Kendall

9

The 30th Annual Pacifica Synod Assembly Thank you for sending me to be one of House of Prayers delegates to the Pacifica Synod Assembly.

Besides all the things that Mike touched on in his article we each chose two workshops to attend.

One of my workshops was titled “Balance in Life: Living with Gratitude, Generosity and Grace” led

by Reverend Bob Mooney from Messiah Lutheran Church in Yorba Linda.

The following is one of the exercises. We were given the words of 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, and as we

read these verses out loud, we replaced the word ‘love’ or the word that referenced ‘love’ with our

name. Place your name on the lines and read through the following verses:

“ ________ is patient, ________ is kind. ________ does not envy, ________ does not

boast, ________ is not proud. ________ is not rude, ________ is not self-seeking,

________ is not easily angered, ________ keeps no record of wrongs. ________ does not

delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. ________ always protects, ________ always

trusts, ________ always hopes, ________ always perseveres.”

I know for myself I have a lot of work to do! Reading the verses with our name in the place of

‘love’ reminds us of what God wants for us to have a balanced life.

My other workshop was titled “Human Trafficking in Southern California.” This was led by Susan

Johnson. She founded the Alabaster Jar Project while at The Church of Rancho Bernardo to

advocate for trafficking victims, lobby for anti-trafficking laws and provide sheltering and

resource facilities all of which are funded by private donors. She shared a wealth of information.

Here are some ways to find more about this project:

AlabasterJarProject.org

AbolishHumanTrafficking.com

PolarisProject.org

TraffickingResourceCenter.org

Again, thank you for the opportunity to attend the Synod Assembly. It was an experience that I

hope you will consider undertaking in the future. And remember – to have a balanced life – love

God, love others, love ourselves.

Blessings,

Cheri Kendall

Amazon Smile is FINALLY available to House of Prayer.

I believe most of us have an Amazon account. You can purchase anything on Amazon and sometimes a lot cheaper than the store.

If you have an Amazon Account all you have to do is login to Amazon Smile and choose your charity as

House of Prayer, Escondido. You MUST put Escondido since there are a lot of House of Prayers.

The difference is that when customers shop on AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com), the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases to the charitable organizations selected by customers.

You can check your account at any time to see how much has been donated. All donated monies will be going to the HOP Youth.

At this time there is NOT a mobile app for Amazon Smile. Just login to Amazon Smile on your browser.

It’s easy and our HOP Youth will benefit also!!

SCRIP

is another great program that our HOP Youth benefit from.

1 Do you go to the grocery store?

2. Do you buy gas for your car?

3. Do you shop at department stores...drug stores...etc?

4. Do you go out to eat? Restaurant'sC.fast food?

5. Do you go to the movies?

There is so much more you can purchase through the SCRIP program. You can buy gift cards in different monetary amounts and use them anytime!!

A lot of people purchase SCRIP at Christmas time, but SCRIP is good ALL YEAR long.

SCRIP is ordered first thing Monday morning and is most times here by Wednesday mornings.

There are forms in front of Carol’s office and in the Narthex. If you’ve never tried it before, now is the time. You will be amazed how simple it is. Buy them as gifts, or use them for yourself.

A percentage of what you order goes to our HOP Youth.

Hey...buy Amazon Cards and then use them on Amazon Smile!! Everyone benefits!!

If you have any questions, call Darla in the church office or Kitty Wiebe our HOP Youth Leader.

BASKET WEAVING

We had a wonderful basket weaving class taught by

MJ Petersen. Everyone who participated learned to make a beautiful basket.

There were so man people interested in taking this class, and since the class

size has to be limited , MJ has gladly agreed to teach another class in August. Many people have already told her they were interested so when it’s time to sign up, be

sure to do so right away.

A devoted dog (voiced by Josh Gad) goes on a quest to discover his purpose in life over the course of several reincarnations and the many owners to whom he belonged. Along the way, he ponders such existential questions as "Why does food taste better in the trash?" and

"What is the meaning of life?"

Going through several names throughout his time, including Toby, Bailey and Buddy, he arrives at the answers to some of his questions via his interactions with the humans he loves, and the lessons about love that he teaches them.
