Warden’s Word!

lovely scenery of the Outer Hebrides, drinking tea, walking, reading, knit-ting, shopping, and all manner of other recreational activities. I decided that I wanted to spend the two weeks learn-

ing something new – to lay down a few new neural pathways in my aging brain, as it were.

This is a part of my commitment to lifelong learning, a value espoused by all institutions of higher learning. We try to impress upon our students that their university education is the begin-ning and not the end, of learning. What they are acquiring in the time that they spend with us are the tools for learn-ing – axioms and fundamental knowl-edge, methodologies for rigorous and disciplined enquiry, the language and structure of academic discourse, and a capacity to consider new informa-tion thoughtfully and critically. We also hope that students leave with an interest in knowing more about the world in which they live and a passion to understand more about the human condition.

Indeed, our (relatively) new programs in the Faculty of Theology are an excellent example of this philosophy made explicit. These programs were

By Janet Hoskins, Warden & Vice Chancellor

designed around the concept of lifelong learning. They assume that students who come to study Theology at St John’s College do so with prior experience which can be applied to and incorporated into their new studies. From my observation of those who have gone through these programs to date, this is precisely what has taken place. Students from a wide diversity of backgrounds have come together to form an incredibly rich learning environment in which they learn from each other, as well as from their instructors.

All of our students have been fortunate to have been a part of the learning community that is St John’s College. St John’s College has been blessed by having some of the finest scholars and teach-ers as Fellows of the College, by a dedicated and caring support staff, by spiritual underpinnings and sup-port, by wonderfully rich and well-established traditions, by an ener-getic and engaged student body, and by alumni and friends who care about the future of these students and are committed to their suc-cess. To this last group, I especially extend my gratitude for the many ways, both financial and otherwise, that you show this support.

I would close with a Gaelic phrase as well but, alas, that will have to wait for my return. In the meantime, best wishes to you and your families for a life filled with love, laughter and learning.

Fàilte! As of this writing, I am about to embark on a month long trip to Scotland with my daughter, included in which will be two weeks at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the Gaelic college on the island of Skye. Madeleine is completing an honours degree in Celtic Studies and is taking up a travel scholarship to study ad-vanced Gaelic. I am registered for a very introductory level course. Maddie and I are “travel buddies” and I am very much looking for-ward to sharing this experience with her. Clearly we will not be in the same class though, so with-out diminishing our shared time, my days could have been filled very pleasantly by enjoying the

60’s Reunion

Faculty of Theologyby John Stafford, Dean of Theology

The Faculty of Theology has held a unique and valued place in the life of St John’s College over its many years. Traditionally, the formal study of Bible and theology has been viewed as accessible and important mainly to those seeking ordina-tion. However, many people have a desire to study theology and this can make a very great difference to the strength and vigour of parish churches and their ministries.

Our present programs—the Diploma in Applied Theology and Advanced Certificate—have matured over the six years since their inception and given students access to high level theological education while maintaining their livelihoods. Some students go on to

be ordained while others find their present work and contributions to parish ministry greatly enhanced and informed. This works out in all sorts of ways, from parish education and discipleship groups, liturgical leadership, preaching, mission and evangelism, pastoral care, and so on.

Behind this lies the vision that theo-logical education is indispensable for all forms of Christian ministry. It is the “joyful” discipline which combines intellectual rigour as well as practical implications for living inside the Christian narrative.

Our students come from many dif-ferent backgrounds and we are very proud of the effort and sacrifice they make to increase their under-standing of the Gospel. Students

also bring the wisdom and skills they have ac-quired from their work and existing vocations, and this helps pro-vide context for grappling with theology. This is part of a process of life long learn-ing and one task of the Faculty of Theology is to encourage that love and appreciation for theology.

We look forward to another excit-ing year and I invite you to consider your support for the Faculty. I hope you have a marvellous summer—if you happen to be in the College, come by the theology offices and say hello.

I am very pleased to be able to share so much great work in my first update as Dean of Studies. Even as the

temperature rises and things seem to slow down, the Fellows at St John’s are hard at it and doing some really fascinating things.

Several Fellows have recently begun research leaves. Dr. Chris Trott, our previous Dean of Studies, is current-ly on research leave in Panniqtuuq, Nunavut. Dr. Trott is one of the central organizers of the annual Panniqtuuq Summer School. Dr. Brenda Cantelo has also just begun a year’s research leave. She will be in Mexico, working with faculty at the Universidad Latina de America to study the Mexican Christian celebrations of the Day of the Dead. Dr. Gabor Lukacs has been very active on the conference circuit during his leave, speaking at several European and North American conferences: Valencia, Spain; Calais, France; in Erice, Italy, and North Bay, Ontario.

Closer to home, the Fellows not on leave have also been busy with exemplary work, and have had that work recognized. Here are just a few of the highlights shared with me:

Mr. Ryan Eyford, has been award-ed a three-year Graduate Student Fund scholarship from Rannis – The Icelandic Centre for Research. This award is valued at $104,000 Cdn and will support his doctoral dis-sertation. We congratulate Ryan on

the Orthodoxies of Standard Academic Discourse(s), currently in press with Taylor and Francis Publishers.

Dr. Dennis Cooley spoke on ‘The postmodern Canadian goes abroad’ and gave a reading at the (Re:)Reading the Canadian Postmodern confer-ence at the University of Ottawa in May. In September, Dennis will have a new book of poetry, Correction Line published. He will be travelling to Germany in October to give a talk and reading at a poetry conference in Saarbrucken.

Dr. Sharon Alward recently received a 2008 University of Manitoba Creative Works Grant for the LUXOR Project. The project focuses “on their individual experiences of the desert, Las Vegas and Los Angeles” and in the theme of redemption.

Dr. Rod Clifton had his article ‘Residential Schools: Another View’ published in the May 31st issue of the National Post. In this piece he argues, from fact-based evidence and his own experience, that residential schools were not the ‘unmitigated disasters’ they are made out to be in the current political climate.

Dr. P. Penner co-authored two papers, scheduled for publica-tion in Algebra Colloquium and Demonstratio Mathematica 41 (2008).

Dr. Bonnie Hallman, is a co-inves-tigator in two very recently funded, large, interdisciplinary research proj-ects. The first is a 5-year, $1million proj-ect based in the entitled Age-Friendly Community Alliance. The second is a Canadian Institutes of Health Research Operating Grant, valued at approxi-mately $239,000 over three years, to investigate ‘Geography of Care: Using the Therapeutic Landscapes Concept as a Framework for Understanding Families with Medically Complex

this substantial award. We are also pleased to congratulate Ryan on his marriage to Aleisha Reimer on April 26th of this year.

Dr. Susan Close had her book, Framing Identity: Social Practices of Photography in Canada (1880-1920), published in 2007 and listed for the following Manitoba Book Awards: Manuala Dias Book Design Award; Ellen McTavish Sykes Award for Best First Book, and; the Mary Scorer Award for Best Book by a Manitoba Publisher. Currently, she is, among other things, co-editing a new book on social activism and design with Prof. Kelley Beaverford, the Director of Architects Without Borders Canada.

Dr. Diana Brydon has recently co-edited, with W.D. Coleman, Renegotiating Community: Interdisciplinary Perspectives, Global Contexts. In June, her guest-edited special issue of Studies in Canadian Literature was released, entitled ‘Poetics and Public Culture in Canada’. Diana will also be serving on the international and interdis-ciplinary advisory committee for a new research project led by Jan Aart Scholte (Warwick/London School of Economics) on ‘Building Global Democracy’.

Dr. Sandie Kouritzin has recently co-edited and written three chapters in, Qualitative Research: Challenging

The last few months have proved to be a busy and exciting time in the Development Office.

We welcomed Nicole Lamothe, who was hired for the summer through a Services Canada grant. She conducted criteria research on Foundations en-abling the College to apply for appro-priate funding for scholarships/bursa-ries, buildings and general operations. Madeleine Hoskins was hired to scan all our historical yearbooks used for research purposes, reducing wear and tear on some very old publications.

From all reports, the 60’s and Before Reunion was a highly successful event. The debate, which was both lively and humourous, proved to be a winner once again. The topic was: To be or not to be is not the question. Anthony Waterman and Mel Wiebe represented the affirmative and David Crawley and Kira Tomsons the negative. Chris Trott acted as the moderator. The debaters

received a hearty round of applause. Another reunion highlight was our SJC photo display, asking those present if they could identify the people in the photos. This proved to be great fun and nearly all persons were identified. Our special guest, Marjorie Ward celebrated her 80th birthday on May 9th. From your generous support $1854 was raised in support of the Marjorie Ward Lecture.

I am very grateful to Judy Jayasuriya our fabulous Event Coordinator. Judy came on board three weeks prior to the reunion and did an amazing job of co-ordinating the work. Judy, the SJC Staff and volunteers worked assiduously to make everything come together, result-ing in an excellent event. Kathy Mitchell assisted with both the beginning stages of the reunion, as well as the reorganiza-tion of the former Development Officer space, which has been converted to a wonderful resource room. Kathy left us for a full-time position off campus.
