Dear Davidson friends,

I t gives me great pleasure to invite you to Reunion Weekend at Davidson College June 4 – 7, 2015. We are celebrating the 5th – 60th reunions for those with class years that end in “0” or “5.” I hope you will make plans to come back for a fun-filled weekend your whole family will enjoy.

Reunion events begin early Friday morning, with some class-specific programming beginning Thursday evening. Learn from Davidson faculty and alumni on a variety of topics through our back-to-school classes, explore campus with special tours and hear an update about the college from President Carol Quillen. Join us for all-alumni events throughout the weekend, including the Friday Kick-Off Gathering and Saturday’s Cake Race and Lawn Party. Reunite with classmates at your class dinner and other class-specific events planned by your class reunion committee.

2:30 p.m.War Memorials Dedication Behind Elm Row, Near the Old Well

Join us as we dedicate new memorials on campus honoring deceased alumni veterans of World War I, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan. The new memorials were made possible by the fundraising efforts of the brothers of Pi Kappa Phi.

How to Use Art to Spur Critical ConversationClint Smith ’10 is a teacher, poet, and Harvard Ph.D. candidate. He delivered the 2014 TED Talk “The Danger of Silence,” which has been viewed more than two million times online. Come listen to Smith describe how he uses poetry in his classroom as a tool for creating social change.

Collected: Works in Alumni Art CollectionsEnjoy a floating gallery reception for Collected: Works in Alumni Art Collections. Listen to alumni discuss works from their personal collections currently on view. Gallery staff will also offer visitors the opportunity to see Davidson College’s permanent collection area.

Fighting Preventable BlindnessCorneal disease is a major cause of blindness in the world. Join Dr. Woody Van Meter ’75, who will speak about his work with ORBIS International. ORBIS conducts continuing education programs in ophthalmology in developing nations around the world aboard a DC-10 aircraft, which has been converted into a fully equipped self-contained flying eye hospital.

Why the Liberal Arts Matter More Than EverTrina Janiec Jones ‘90, recently appointed as the associ-ate provost for curriculum and co-curriculum at Wofford College, started her first job as a religion professor almost a year to the day after September 11, 2001. Having now taught undergraduate religion courses at two small liberal arts colleges, she will discuss the ways her Davidson education has shaped her teaching, and why the liberal arts are increasingly important in a world punctuated by the promise and challenges of religious pluralism.

What is Cyberwar? Thinking about the Case of the Sony CyberattackEric Rosenbach ‘95, who currently serves as assistant sec-retary of defense and the lead for cyber policy at the Penta-gon, will discuss the North Korean cyberattack against Sony Pictures. Was the attack an act of war? How should the U.S. government respond to significant cyberattacks against the United States? Rosenbach will lead an active discussion on these questions and others related to cyber issues.

A Look at Strategic Philanthropy in Global Development: Catalyzing an Agricultural Transformation in AmericaThe last 15 years have witnessed some of the greatest progress in human development in world history. Adam Gerstenmier ’05 spent seven years working on global development strategy and partnerships for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He recently moved to Nairobi, Kenya, to serve as chief of staff for the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), a dynamic partnership founded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Rockefell-er Foundation to help millions of small-scale African farmers and their families lift themselves out of poverty and hunger.

Davidson Alumni in International Politics: Lou Ortmayer’s LegacyFour Davidson alumni who have pursued careers in interna-tional affairs reflect on current trends in global politics and business and the impact Lou Ortmayer had on their education and worldviews. Ortmayer, who has taught at Davidson since 1979 and who has been at the center of the impressive flow of Davidson alumni into international careers, is retiring this year, and this panel honors his many contributions to the college.

From Colorblindness to Colorbravery: Insights on De-Institutionalizing RacismThis panel examines how America’s basic beliefs helped cre-ate and now sustain a system of inequality. From the media and classroom to the criminal justice system, the panel explores the existence of bias in everyday habits, established policies and entrenched institutions, examining solutions for improving diversity and inclusion.

Panel members include: Janet Stovall Harrell ’85, founder and principal of The Point Communications, Doug Ammar ’84, executive director of the Georgia Justice Project, and Tae-Sun Kim, director of multicultural affairs, Davidson College.

The American Revolution in the SouthAnyone picking up a modern American history textbook will find very little about the American Revolution and what is usually presented makes it appear that the Revolution all took place outside the South. In this presentation, Walter Edgar ’65 will discuss the impact of political and military events that occurred in the Southern colonies from 1775

Welcome CenterStop here as soon as you arrive on campus! Visit the Welcome Center in the Nancy O. Blackwell Alumni House, located at 420 N. Main Street to check in and pick up your registration materials. Short-term parking for those checking in is available in the Smith House and Admission parking lots.

Dietary Restrictions Our caterers will do their best to accommodate individuals with special dietary restrictions; however, they must know in advance. It is imperative that you submit your registration by Friday, May 22 so we can provide you with the meals you need. Last minute requests may not be possible to accommodate.

Parking Parking throughout the weekend is available in the Baker Sports Complex parking lot off Concord Road. Short-term parking for those checking in is available in the Smith House and Admission parking lots.

Shuttles Prior to and following the signature events of the weekend, golf carts will be available to shuttle guests to and from the Baker Sports Complex parking lot as well as between event locations. If you need a ride to or from campus, please call Yellow Cab of Lake Norman at 704-664-3232.

Emergency Information If an emergency arises while you are attending Reunion Weekend, family and friends may contact the Davidson College Campus Police at 704-894-2178. Please make sure they know the class with which you are associated.

Weekend Photos A photographer will be on campus throughout the weekend to take candid photographs. These photos, along with your official class photo, will be available online for viewing and purchase shortly after the weekend at davidsonalumni.smugmug.com. Davidson College reserves the right to use

these photos in future promotional materials. If you have privacy concerns, please email us at [email protected].

AttireDress for the weekend is casual. The class dinner attire is dressy casual unless indicated otherwise by your reunion committee. Please note that many of the weekend events will take place outside on lawns or under tents. Please check the weather forecast as the weekend approaches.

Refund PolicyIn order to grant a refund, we must receive notice of cancel-lation. No refund requests will be accepted after Friday, May 22. Refunds requested prior to the deadline will be processed following Reunion Weekend. Please contact the Office of Alumni Relations with questions at 704-894-2110 or [email protected].

ScholarshipsDavidson tries to keep reunion costs to a minimum while of-fering a wide range of quality activities. General Information

Special AssistanceIf you require special assistance during Reunion Weekend, we are happy to help! Reunion Weekend facilities and on-campus housing locations are ADA-compliant. Please contact Judith Rowles in the Office of Alumni Relations at 704-894-3003 or [email protected] to arrange any accommodations.

Nisbet Fitness CenterThe Nisbet Fitness Center will be available to alumni and families throughout the weekend. It is equipped with tread-mills, bikes, elliptical machines, Nautilus equipment, exercise balls and stretching mats. The fitness center is located on the first floor of the Alvarez College Union and will be accessible from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 7 a.m. to noon on Sunday. (Note: Baker Sports Complex will only be open and available on Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

Reflection and Memorial Space We invite you to visit the Oasis, a new reflection, meditation, and prayer space provided by the Chaplain’s Office, located on the fourth floor of the Alvarez College Union. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Lake Campus Open for alumni between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily during Reunion Weekend. Bring a bathing suit, picnic and your name tag to present to the gate attendant for admittance. As a reminder, no alcohol is allowed.

To reach the Lake Campus (152 Lake Campus Drive) from Davidson, take I-77 north to exit 31 (Langtree Road). Go left/west on Langtree Road for .7 miles. At the traffic circle take the second exit to stay on Langtree Road and proceed .3 miles to Lake Campus Drive. Take a right on Lake Campus Drive and follow to the gatehouse entrance. Parking is avail-able and free.

Tee Times Available at River Run Country ClubFor anyone wishing to play golf on Friday, June 5, River Run Country Club will be providing tee times for Reunion Weekend attendees. River Run is a private golf club three miles east of campus and is home of the Men’s Golf team and host site of the Chiquita Classic, a web.com playoff event. For more information, please call the River Run Pro Shop at 704-896-7355.

Alcohol PolicyOpen containers are not permitted outdoors on the Davidson campus. Davidson Campus Police will enforce this policy throughout the weekend.

You will receive no more than three messages prior to the weekend and no more than five during Reunion Weekend. Message and data rates may apply.

On-Campus Housing Information Residence halls will be available Friday and Saturday nights for those returning for Reunion Weekend. As a courtesy to Davidson and each other, please treat the residence halls with respect. The residence halls should not be used for parties. Damages on the hall, lost keys or lost CatCards will result in extra charges. Please return all keys and CatCards upon checkout to avoid extra fees.

How do I reserve a room on campus?Request forms for on-campus rooms can be found online at www.davidson.edu/reunion beginning April 2. You may submit a request for both Friday and Saturday evenings or just Saturday evening. Note that for family apartments or double rooms, one person will need to be responsible for making the reservation and payment to the college.

What should I bring with me if I stay on campus? Guests will receive sheets, towels and a pillow upon arrival as well as a swipe card for access to the building. Please bring any additional amenities (alarm clock, iron, hair dryer, etc.) that you require during your stay. Note: restrooms are shared with others on your hall.

What information will I need to request on-campus housing?To make a request, you will need to know how many nights you plan to stay and which type of room you prefer. If you will be staying in a double room, confirm with your room-mate who will make the reservation and payment. One request per room will be processed.

Can I request hall mates?Yes, and we will do our best to accommodate requests for alumni to share a hall with their friends. These requests are made on the online housing form.

What if I bring kids?Four-bedroom apartments available in the Davis Residence Hall are reserved for families with two or more children. Our rooms are limited, so register early!

What are the on-campus housing options and prices? Single Room (one twin bed) for Friday and Saturday: $90; for Saturday only: $70 Double Room (two twin beds) for Friday and Saturday: $150; for Saturday only: $110Apartment (four twin beds, kitchen, and living area) for Friday and Saturday: $210; for Saturday only: $175

Damage BillingGuests are responsible for the return of both the CatCard and the room key upon checkout. There will be a $10 charge for each lost CatCard and a $40 charge for each lost room key. Should damage occur to individual rooms, the cost will be charged to the credit card on file. If damage occurs in a common area and the individuals responsible are unidentified, costs will be shared among all guests with credit cards on file. The Office of Alumni Relations will notify each guest before a charge is made. All guests must agree to the terms of a credit card authorization form prior to their arrival to campus.

What is the deadline to request on-campus housing?The deadline is Friday, May 22. Please note that the apartments reserved for families generally fill up within the first week of registration.

Children’s Activities and Childcare

Bring your kids along! Reunion Weekend is structured with families in mind. There will be plenty of on-campus activities that will appeal to both children and teens. Several athletic and classroom back-to-school classes on Friday are designed to be family friendly. The family-friendly events for the weekend are denoted by a paw print throughout the brochure.

RECREATE

BabysittingA list of Davidson community members will be provided to alumni interested in hiring a babysitter during Reunion Weekend. Please email us at [email protected] for a copy of the list. The baby-sitters listed are recommended by members of the Davidson com-munity. All questions regarding scheduling, availability and payment should be made directly with the babysitter. Please note that the college does not provide training or supervision of the babysitters, nor has it performed background checks on the babysitters listed. Camp Reunion For those with children ages 4 -16, we are pleased to offer specific events through Camp Reunion on Friday and Saturday evenings. Children and teenagers will be provided dinner and a variety of age-appropriate activities throughout the evening. Please see the sample schedule on this page. If your child has special dietary restrictions, you are more than welcome to pack a special dinner. Davidson students who have completed back-ground checks will supervise Camp Reunion. Pre-registration is required in order to maintain a safe adult-to-child ratio. Keep this in mind when registering children of different ages. We must group them based on age (4-6), (7-11), (12-16) to maintain the ratio. We are unable to accommodate walk-ins, children who are under the age of four or children who are not potty-trained.

The price is $30/child/night. This includes dinner and snacks. Dinner on Friday will be pizza and Saturday will be chicken nuggets. Both dinners will come with drinks, fruit, etc. Movies for ages 4-11 will be PG and for ages 12-16 will be PG-13. Limited space is available.

Registering ChildrenChildren must be registered in order to be accounted for during the weekend. Most events throughout the weekend are free for children to join; however, meals are offered at a reduced cost for children under the age of nine. When completing the registration form, be sure to denote which meals kids will attend and if they will attend Camp Reunion. (Note: It is not encouraged to bring children to class dinners.)

Registration Guide

1 Online registration is available for all 12 Reunion classes at www.davidson.edu/reunion. The classes of 1970, 1965, 1960 and 1955 have the option of completing a hard copy of the registration form (enclosed in the Reunion brochure) or registering online. For those without access to a computer or a paper registration form, please call 704-894-2110 to register.

2 Be sure to pay the registration fee only once. The fee is per household, not per person.

3 The Reunion Weekend Packages include different sets of meals. Pay careful attention to register only once for a specific meal.

4 Note any dietary restrictions for each person. It may not be possible to accommodate on-site requests.

5 Class Hotels are already accepting registrations for Reunion Weekend. On campus housing fills up quickly, particularly the apartments. Make those reservations assoon as registration opens on April 2!

6 Reunion Weekend is family friendly. Each family mem-ber, including children, should register for the weekend. Registration and corresponding costs for kids’ meals and Camp Reunion can be found on the registration form. All other events are free for them to attend.

7 Children eight and under are eligible for the kids’ prices on meals. Depending on the meal, this will be either a smaller adult portion or an alternative kids meal. Kids nine and older are not eligible for the kids meal prices.

8 Children are welcome to attend all events; however, Saturday class dinners are usually best suited for adults.

9 Camp Reunion reaches capacity quickly, so register early.
