Return of a PolarVortex?

BRRRRR! AFTER A FEW WEEKS of fairly ‘moder-ate’ winter weather, it seems that, once again,we’ve been plunged into a deep freeze, as thisweek’s daily temperatures are expected to dropsignificantly below what we’ve come to think ofas ‘normal’ for this time of year. And it’s not justus here in Northern Ontario. It’s also happeningin Southern Ontario and, in fact, right down intothe U.S. Midwest and through both the Americannortheast and southeast, where they’re seeingrecord low temperatures.

And of course, we’re once againhearing that oh-so-familiar line“due to a mass of cold air comingdown from Canada.” So who orwhat do we Canadians blame inturn? Why, the Arctic of course!

Although we’re no weather ex-perts, we have been hearing quitea bit lately about a phenomenonknown as a Polar Vortex beingthe cause of this huge deepfreeze. More specifically, a dis-torted Polar Vortex. It’s not reallya ‘storm’ like a winter hurricane, but it can be the cause of somepretty nasty weather as its off-spring.

As its name suggests, a Polar Vor-tex is the circulation of strong, high altitude winds in the troposphere and stratosphere around the Earth’s poles. It’s really a huge, dense polar low-pressuresystem that, in the northern hemisphere, spins in a counterclockwise direction. These winds tend to keep the bitter cold airlocked in the Arctic regions. Sometimes however, the upper-level winds that make up the Polar Vortex decrease in strength, al-lowing the vortex to expand and oscillate, usually resulting in a jet stream that plunges deep into southern latitudes, bringingthe cold, dense Arctic air spilling down with it.

The experts call this an Arctic Oscillation and it can switchfrom a positive phase, with strong upper-level winds, to a neg-ative phase with weaker winds, a few times per year.Whenthat happens, it can bring major cold air outbreaks through-out the northern hemisphere … and when it happens in win-ter, it can get seriously frosty – as in ‘Niagara Falls freezingover’ kind of frosty!

Although sometimes referred to as a ‘polar cyclone’, it’s not re-ally a storm, but a cold air outbreak caused by the Polar Vor-tex is much more widespread and can last much longer than asingle storm.Widespread drops in temperature, lead to thedevelopment of significant winter storms, especially when thecold air is advancing into a previously warm region.

Last March for example, much of Europe recorded their cold-est temperatures in over 50 years. The cause? Polar Vortex. Here in North America, the first two weeks of the new yearbrought us a cold slap in the face, while places farther southhad their ‘coldest weather’ and snowfall records shattered. What caused it? Right! Polar Vortex!

Now, meteorologists in the American northeast are nervouslywatching their computer models, as the possibility of anothervortex rears its ugly head, just in time for the NFL Super BowlXLVIII at the MetLife Stadium, just outside New York City …the first Super Bowl in history that will be played outdoors ina northern city. If the weather models hold, bitterly cold tem-peratures should descend on the city the week before the biggame… and stick around for a while.

Environment Canada is presently expecting that this newblast of dense Arctic air will hit Ontario, Quebec and Mani-toba with much-colder-than-normal temperatures, but thingswon’t likely be as cold as early January, when wind chills hit-50 C in some regions. Toronto, for whom the average tem-perature at this time of year is -2 C, is forecast to hoveraround -20 C. The bitter cold will likely stick around Ontario

and Manitoba until the end of January but continue to hangover Saskatchewan and Alberta until mid-February.

Our recent bouts of cold weather have also had a major im-pact on the Great Lakes and the shipping industry, which inturn has significantly affected the steel industry, which de-pends heavily on a steady supply of raw materials - iron ore, coal and limestone, all of which come by ship.

Bitterly cold winter weather caused the St. Mary’s river andthe Straits of Mackinac to start freezing over in late Novem-ber, the earliest in recent history. Since early December, manyIslanders have been able to watch American and CanadianCoast Guard icebreakers opening up the shipping channel, only to have the ice re-freeze as soon as the ships passed by.

According to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Ad-ministration and the Canadian Ice Service, Lake Michigan isnow more than 35 percent frozen over, a level of iciness atthis time of year that has not occurred in five years.

In an average winter, about 55 percent of Lake Michigan’ssurface gets covered with ice. This year, the extreme cold mayfreeze as much as 62 percent, and perhaps more. Lake Erie, being much shallower, is already reported to be close to 90%frozen over, while Lakes Superior, Huron and Ontario appearto be following a similar trend in freezing faster and fartherthan usual.

There’s not much you can do to prevent these occasionalblasts of extra-wintery cold air, aside from staying warm in-side and, when you must go out, to dress appropriately forcold weather and extreme wind chills. After all, we’re Cana-dian! With all due respect to our friends down south who arelining up to buy emergency supplies and learning how todrive in snow and ice, we still think of it all as just ‘winter’.

These polar vortices and the horrible winter conditions thatthey cause have been around for a long, long time. Our ownparents, as we all know, regularly walked 20 miles each way toand from school, in minus 40 degree weather, hip deep insnow, and uphill both ways to boot! And that was in July!

We’re Planting a Community Garden!

By Jennifer Woods

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY GARDEN? It’s a group of peo-ple coming together to nurture, develop and sustain a grow-ing space in their community. This type of garden reflects thearea it serves; engaging, educating, building and strengthen-ing a community in a significant way. It’s a way to make ourcommunity more vibrant and beautiful!

Community gardens provide fresh produce and plants, aswell as satisfying labour, neighborhood improvement, a senseof community and a connection to the environment. In orderfor a garden to be sustainable as a true community resource,it must grow from local conditions and reflect the strengths, needs and desires of the local community. You’ll enjoy the ca-maraderie of like-minded people, reap the physical and psy-chological rewards of regular activity and be blown away bythe delicious taste of fresh, homegrown vegetables.

“Community gardening is a holistic activity,” says Sean Cos-grove, an urban planner in Toronto who has written on thesubject for 10 years. “It engages people at many levels—itprovides food and flowers, it’s healthy, outdoor exercise, itconnects people with nature and it builds communities bybringing people together.”

Diverse participation and leadership at all phases of gardenoperation enrich and strengthen a community garden and allcommunity members have the ability to contribute some-thing. This process offers a way for community stakeholdersto be involved even if they are not currently a part of the gar-den’s organizing group.

In a community garden, people work together; different agesand cultures mix. There are a number of benefits that resultfrom community gardening:

• Better quality of life for those involved

• Improved neighbourhood and community development

• Neighbourhood beautification

• Provision of nutritious and budget-friendly food

• Conservation of resources

• Preservation of green space

• Opportunities for cross-generational and cross-culturalconnections

The Township of St. Joseph is having their first communitygarden committee workshop on Wednesday January 29th at 7pm in the Council Chambers. All members of the communityare welcome to attend if they would like to be a part of thisgreat project!

The cold is bringing out the amateur scientists. Throwingboiling water into the frigid air is a popular experiment. Oneperson found that when you put boiling water in a SuperSoaker it becomes a freeze ray. But if you're going to do this, please be careful! You can burn yourself badly.

Make SnowWhen very hot water reaches very cold air, the water vapor-izes, and some of it turns into small chunks of ice. Snow, basi-cally. This can lead to camera-friendly visuals. Thetemperature should be -21F (-29.4C) with a wind chill of -51F (-46.1C),

Be careful make sure the wind is blowing away from you andthrow the water away from you not over your head, so youdon’t burn yourself. Kids don’t do this at all get your parent todo it for you and you can take the pictures.

MUCH SAFER...Make Ice BubblesTake bubble solution out into the cold and make an amazingseries of frozen-bubble photos. They have been widely sharedthese last few days. The science is pretty simple: the water

freezes in the bitter air but the soapy solution allows it to re-tain its bubble form. As soon as you touch them though, theheat from your fingers will melt the bubble. The largest ofthem make for great photos while the smallest ones can rollaround on the ground like tiny marbles.

Be Careful of your Pets & LivestockVeterinarians say the smaller the animal, the higher the riskof freezing to death. In dogs and cats, shivering and lethargyare the first two signs of trouble.

“The smaller you are, the more body surface you have, andthe quicker you will lose body heat,” said Dr. Douglas G. As-pros, immediate past president of the Illinois-based AmericanVeterinary Medical Association.

Subzero wind chills have been widely registered and they area big factor because wind strips heat from pets faster.

If you need to warm a shivering animal, a quick and easy wayis to heat a towel in the dryer and wrap it around them.

Rule of thumb: If you don’t want to be outside for an ex-tended period of time, your pets probably don’t want to be either. Very cold weather can be deadly to dogs and cats.

Frostbite is the biggest concern for animals that are livingoutside during a blast of frigid air like the one that has de-scended on the area.

That’s why straw is just as important for animals this week asshelter from the wind, access to water and extra food thatgives them energy to keep warm.

A thick layer of straw will help horses in stalls, calves orheifers in a hutch and any other animal seeking a way to staywarm.
