WALT: Use a wide range of clause structures

Can you name the planets in order? Watch the Pandora clip, have you seen the film Avatar? I highly recommend it. Watch the clip – Pandora https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBGDmin_38E#action=share Use a dictionary to find the definitions of the technical vocabulary like, toxic, uninhabitable, etc Record facts from the clip in books or on a piece of paper

Look through your Pandora fact sheet and choose 6-8 facts, which you think are important to add to your introduction, ie, it is located…, how many light years from Earth, where, how it orbits… Focus on *relative clauses, relative, **fronted adverbials and ***subordinate Look at resource 1b to help you. Write an introductory paragraph about the planet/moon Pandora

Wednesday

WALT use adverbs, preposition phrases and expanded noun phrases

Read through your work from yesterday (at home to an adult, in school to the rest of the class)Have you used higher level vocabulary? Use a thesaurus for synonyms. Can you change any words? In class record for WW Watch the clip again from 1 minute to 2m and 10 secs – listen for vocab that links to the anatomy of the creatures – look at the resource sheet “Alien creatures’ and using resource 2a, can you orally describe the appearance of the creature?

Look at resource 2b – look at the use of expansion, prepositional phrases and adverbs Resource 2c – inspiration for your own hexapod, combine different features from different insects to create your own hexapod Design, draw and label your own hexapod, giving details about its anatomy – no colour, as this should referenced in labelling.

Thursday

WALT: use a range of cohesive devices, including adverbials

Watch the clip again and listen to the descriptions of the creatures, children to finish anatomy of insect Features of a NCR – See resources Think about your subheadings

Using ideas and designs from yesterday, now create a paragraph Write a paragraph about the anatomy of the Hexapod, ensure the use of at least six features of the hexapod. Use resource 3a to look at cohesive devices, eg, repetitions, adverbials, conjunctions, use of pronouns, etc. Complete paragraph about the anatomy of creature *6 features, use of conjunctions **7 features with deails of their function, conjunctions and adverbials, ***8 features and their function, conjunctions adverbials

Before tomorrow, think about what you would like your final paragraph to be about.

Friday

WALT: use features of formality required in a non-chronological report

Look at resource 4a – Read it Water Scorpion report – your report needs to be formal. Answer the questions, can you use this report to inform your own? (In school with Mrs B – use slow sentence strategy. Use 4a to help in writing today and Monday)

Create a paragraph about your hexapods diet Use the internet to research insects and their diets Consider what the insect eats and also how they eat. Write the paragraph under a subheading. Before Monday, think about your concluding paragraph. Will it be to describe its habitat, threats to its existence or perhaps its life cycle?

Resource 1b Relative clause Pandora’s toxic atmosphere, which is highly noxious and deadly to humans, makes the planet uninhabitable without specialist equipment. Fronted adverbial clause Located in Alpha Centauri system over 4.4 light years from Earth, Pandora orbits the gas giant Polythemus.

Fronted subordinate clause While dense rainforests cover most of the surface of Pandora, the Hallelujah mountains float almost one kilometre above land and are held in flux by strong magnetic fields.

Using adverbial phrases, prepositional phrases and expanded noun phrases

It has proboscis.

The creature’s long proboscis extends over its jaws and acts as a feeding tube for swallowing liquids.

It has a stinger.

To the rear of the abdomen is a short barbed stinger, which is used for administering a toxic venom to its victim.

It has compound eyes.

Compound eyes allow several thousand lenses to be used in a single eye and enable the creature to see with precision.

The Banded Lumipod Beetle Resource 3a

There are many hexapods (six legged creatures) on Pandora including a great number of insects. One such insect is the lumipod beetle. This beetle has six, jointed legs, which carry it across the ground at an impressive pace. It has a thick exoskeleton covering its broad abdomen and thorax, and protecting its retractable bioluminescent tail. The sizeable tail is almost double the length of the beetle and mimics an electric ground viper when seen at night. This ingenious adaptation ensures that larger predators are less likely to pursue the creature in the dark, due to the snake-like appearance of the tail. Lumipods have two compound eyes at the front of their head, which also glow with a bioluminescent light. Their eyes are made up of several thousand individual unit lenses, consequently enabling the creature to see a much wider area than the human eye, despite not being particularly large. Sharp, forked mandibles above the mouth allow the beetle to crush its food, though it also has a second set which are jagged and used when fighting. The banded lumipod gets its peculiar name from the black and grey bands around the abdomen, which are dual function: they help with camouflage but also secrete a toxic venom if ingested. There are around 20 species of lumipod on Pandora, including banded, flying and spotted.
