As the COVID19 pandemic continues to re- strict the number of people that can gather in a single location, Extension has decided to hold the egg preparation demonstration contest vir- tually. The contest is open to all Kentucky 4-H youth ages 9-18 as of January 1, 2021. The contestants need to prepare a 12-minute long presentation that involves cooking an egg- based dish while discussion egg-related infor- mation. The presentations will be filmed at their county extension office. The virtual contest will be on October 24 at 10 AM Eastern time via zoom. Connection infor- mation will be sent prior to the contest. As part of the virtual contest, each of the videos will be played and the presentations judged by at least two people and awards announced. Contestants will be judged on presentation content and presentation skill. There will be no sensory evaluation of product this year so the score will be out of 70 instead of the normal 100 points for the in-person contest. For each division (juniors and seniors), the top individual will receive $200, 2nd place $100, 3rd place $75, 4th place $50, and 5th place $25. The checks and ribbons for them will be mailed to their county extension office for pickup. If you are interested, contact your Green County 4-H office to schedule your video time on October 14. Ready, Set, Go Collect Leaves Leaf collecting is the first 4-H project for many youth and may double as a county fair entry. A leaf collection not only teaches young people how to ID tree species, but it also can open their eyes to all the benefits trees and forests provide to humans and the environment. Kentucky is home to more than 100 species of broadleaf trees. Broadleaf trees lose their leaves in the fall and make up 95 percent of Kentucky forests. Conifers, or evergreen trees, comprise less than 5 percent. Collecting leaves by soon allows for mature leaves in collections with minimal insect holes, spots or bumps.

Leaves collected during the late sum-mer may be easier to press, but there is an increased risk of leaf imperfec-tions. When collecting leaves, select a small twig on the end of the branch that contains at least two leaves. Mount the best one. Make sure the leaf you select looks very similar to the other leaves on the tree, as some leaves can be more abnor-mal than others. For more details about creating your 4-H leaf collection, contact your Green County 4-H office, or join the Winter Naturalist 4-H club described to the right.
