MAXIMUM SECURITY=SRETURN DOESN=T ANSWER
MANY QUESTIONS
The Week in Review, by Bill Finley Just about everyone was prepared to either love or hate theperformance of Maximum Security (New Year=s Day) in the GIISan Diego H. Saturday at Del Mar. Either he would come backand dominate or he would struggle in his first performanceoutside of the notorious Jason Servis barn. There didn=t appearto be much room for a gray area. But that=s where things have landed. He was good enough towin but not so good that he proved beyond any doubt that he isthe same horse as he was throughout last year and whenwinning the $20-million Saudi Cup in February. The optimist can point to a strangely run race in whichMaximum Security set the early pace, was taken back bysubstitute jockey Abel Cedillo and dropped back to third. That=snot exactly the easiest way to win a race, but Maximum Securityhad a second run in him and just nipped Midcourt (MidnightLute) by a nose. He showed a lot of determination. Plus, it washis first race in nearly five months and new trainer Bob Baffertadmitted Sunday that he didn=t have Maximum Security fullycranked up. AI actually thought he was pretty good right after the racebeing that I only had him about 80%,@ Baffert said. AI didn=t thinkhe=d have to do a stop-and-go movement [during the race] buthe showed what a great horse he is.@ Cont. p3
SOMELIKEITHOTBROWN GOES ALL THE
WAY IN BERNARD BARUCH UPSET Somelikeithotbrown, a sneaky-good third after setting a fast
pace last out, was left alone on a much easier lead in Sunday=s
GII Bernard Baruch S. at Saratoga and parlayed it to an upset
victory, leading home a one-two finish for trainer Mike Maker.
Drifting up to over twice his 4-1 morning-line quote, the bay
figured to take pressure from second choice Halladay (War
Front) to his outside, but instead got loose under Tyler
Gaffalione and walked the dog through pedestrian fractions of
:24.79 and :49.08. Halladay started to turn up the heat nearing
the lane and it briefly appeared as though the frontrunner
would get swallowed up, but Somelikeithotbrown re-broke
outside the furlong grounds and was always doing enough to
hold stablemate Mr Dumas at bay. Cont. p5

Week in Review cont. from p1
Baffert added that he considered the San Diego a small step in
the process.
AIt=s a good starting point, we learned a lot about the horse,
now we=re caught up and he=s ready to go,@ he said
Yet, it wasn=t unreasonable to expect something better than a
nose victory in a Grade II race. This is the horse who was last
year=s champion 3-year-old and right after the Saudi Cup was
widely considered the best horse in training. The Maximum
Security that won the GI Cigar Mile H., the Saudi Cup and
crossed the wire first in the GI Kentucky Derby would have
crushed the type of horses he faced in the San Diego.
That horse, of course, was trained by Servis, and every time
one of his former horses races, everyone is left to wonder if they
will perform for new trainers who are not using performance-
enhancing drugs.
All of which is why one should neither write Maximum Security
off or declare that he is back. There are just too many questions
and there is plenty of time for them to be answered.
Baffert mentioned the GI Woodward S. at Saratoga as a
possibility for Maximum Security, but it=s much more likely that
he will go next in the GI Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 22.
AHe=s got a lot of will to win, he=s courageous and a smart
horse,@ Baffert said. AThere=s just something about him, he=s got
a lot of will to win. He=s got a lot of W=s by his name and there=s
a reason for that.@
But, for Maximum Security, the goal now goes beyond
winning. He needs to not only win the Pacific Classic but to do it
impressively and show everyone that he is the one to beat in
the GI Breeders= Cup Classic.
As for the San Diego, I=ll give him a B- for a grade. That doesn=t
mean there=s not an A+ performance yet to come. Cont. p4

Volatile | Sarah Andrew
Still No News Out of Saudi Arabia
It=s been 138 days since the running of the Saudi Cup and 129
days since Jason Servis was among a long list of individuals
indicted for allegedly doping their horses. That should be more
than enough time for Saudi racing officials to have concluded
their investigation and determine whether or not Maximum
Security will be disqualified and the purse redistributed. The
ultimate decision may rest on whether or not any illegal
medications were found in Maximum Security=s system after the
race, but those tests should have been concluded months ago.
What=s going on? Another week has gone by without any
answers.
Here=s what Director of Strategy and International Racing for
the Jockey Club Of Saudi Arabia Tom Ryan told the TDN in an
email last week: AWork on the Maximum Security investigation
continues. At the moment it looks like we will be able to issue an
official statement as a means of an update over the next week
or so.@
Will Volatile and Vekoma Meet Up?
The expectations for Volatile (Violence) were so high coming
into the GI Alfred Vanderbilt S. Saturday at Saratoga that not
everyone was raving about his victory. A lot did go his way. Rival
Whitmore (Pleasantly Perfect) broke through the gate prior to
the start, which likely compromised his chances. And Volatile
was somehow allowed to set about as slow a pace as you will
ever see for a Grade I sprint race. The first quarter went in 23.46
and the half was completed in 46.67 before Volatile won by 1
1/4 lengths.
But that doesn=t mean this wasn=t a test for a horse who had
never even run in a graded stakes race before, no less a Grade I.
His three opponents had earned a combined $6,091,100 and
Volatile beat them decisively. Cont. p5
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 5 OF 15 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • JULY 27, 2020
After campaigning Mitole (Eskendereya), who ran an
uncharacteristically poor race last year in the Vanderbilt when
third, trainer Steve Asmussen may once again have the best
sprinter in the country.
But there=s at least one outstanding horse standing between
Volatile and an Eclipse Award and that is Vekoma (Candy Ride
{Arg}), the winner of the GI Runhappy Carter H. and the Gi
Runhappy Metropolitan H. The Aug. 29 GI Forego at Saratoga
seems like a logical spot for both Vekoma and Volatile, and if
both show up, that may be the race of the meet.
Keeping An Eye on Kentucky=s COVID-19 Situation
For now, spectators will be allowed to attend the Kentucky
Derby, but one has to wonder if that is about to change.
Churchill Downs made the announcement June 24 that it has
received permission from Governor Andy Beshear to allow fans
to attend the Derby week races during a short September meet
at Churchill. At the time, the state was doing quite well in its
fight against the coronavirus. According to the New York Times,
on June 24 there were only 199 new cases of coronavirus in the
state. On Sunday, 836 new cases were reported, the second
highest total since the outbreak began.
"We're not playing around with the numbers that we're
seeing," Beshear said.
Had there been that many cases on a daily basis back in June,
it seems highly unlikely that Beshear would have given the
green light to having fans. Churchill has said that the amount of
people allowed to watch will be limited, but haven=t said what
sort of number they are targeting.
Around 50,000 seems like a reasonable estimate, which would
be a public gathering that would be unprecedented since
COVID-19 became a fact of life. Considering what=s going on, not
just in Kentucky but around the country, it=s hard to imagine
that happening. Beshear certainly has reason to reverse course.

Narrow chalk Good Governance edged Halladay in a photo for
third.
Third after leading to deep stretch in the GI Breeders= Cup
Juvenile Turf, the bay annexed the John Battaglia Memorial S.
and GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks to start his sophomore campaign, but
headed to the bench for the rest of the season after running
fourth in the GII Toyota Blue Grass S. Last in a Gulfstream
optional claimer upon return Jan. 20, he captured a Turfway
allowance Feb. 21 and was runner-up in the TwinSpires
Kentucky Cup Classic S. there Mar. 14.

Somelikeithotbrown | Coglianese
Showing the way through sharp splits in the GII Fort Marcy S.
June 6 at Belmont, he held well to fill the trifecta behind next-
out GI Manhattan S. hero Instilled Regard (Arch).
AI thought his last race, he went a little too quick and opened
up a little too much. There was a loose horse getting him a little
more in the bridle than what we wanted. But I thought it was a
very credible race,@ Maker said. AOn paper, I was concerned that
he and [Halladay] might hook up, but Luis [Saez, aboard
Halladay] took back a little bit and let us have things our own
way.@
AI was a little surprised down the backside when I was all by
myself,@ added Gaffalione. AI thought there would be a little
more pressure, but I was happy with where I was and how he
was running. All the credit to Mike and his team, they had him
ready today. Every time I reached back and threw a cross and
when I got into him a little bit, he kept on responding and giving
me more, so I was pretty confident coming to the wire.@
Pedigree Notes:
Somelikeithotbrown is one of 31 stakes winners and nine
graded stakes winners for 2008 GI Kentucky Derby and GI
Preakness S. hero Big Brown. His second dam, Summer Scene, is
a half-sister to champion juvenile Stevie Wonderboy (Stephen
Got Even). A $255,000 weanling buy at Keeneland November in
2010, dam Marilyn Monroan is responsible for a juvenile Temple
City colt and a yearling colt by Palace Malice and foaled a Hard
Spun filly Apr. 26.

Mr Ritz, who picked up his first graded stakes win in last year=s
GIII Seagram Cup S. at Woodbine, successfully defended his title
in Sunday=s renewal with a frontrunning score.
An upset victor of the Caesars S. on the Indiana Grand turf as a
sophomore, the homebred was third in the GIII Ontario Derby
before running second by a nose in the local GII Eclipse S. in his
4-year-old bow. Fifth in the GII King Edward S. back on grass, he
went wire to wire in the Seagram Cup and repeated in the
Presque Isle Downs Mile S. Runner-up in the GII Autumn S. to
close his 2019 account, he was third at odds-on when making his
seasonal debut in the Eclipse July 4.
Made the clear favorite here, Mr Ritz dictated terms while
pressed by longshot Explode (Trappe Shot) through splits of
:24.28 and :47.95. Cut loose by Patrick Husbands three furlongs
from home, he was confronted by another longshot in Cooler
Mike approaching the lane, but made short work of that rival
once turning for home and stayed clear down to the line.

ALEX RIETHMILLER, VP OF
COMMUNICATIONS, NFL MEDIA
This month=s column focuses on messaging and the
importance of a clear communication strategy as a crucial
element to successfully promote and grow a sport. In the U.S.,
the NFL sits atop the sports apex and, similar to racing, the
league has had to address a variety of controversial issues that
challenged the integrity and popularity of the sport.
After graduating from the University of Virginia, my
roommate, Alex Riethmiller, and I decided to embark on careers
in Sports Business. While my first job was producing events for
the NBA, Alex began a career in PR working for the newest
franchise in the NFL, The Jacksonville Jaguars. From there, Alex
went on to work with the Atlanta Hawks and then ran
communications for the sports, news and entertainment brands
of CBS Interactive.
Currently, Alex is a VP in the NFL=s Communications
department.

Based out of the League=s offices and studios in Los Angeles,

CC: What is your favorite racing memory?
AR: I would have to say attending my first live racing experience,
the 1999 Breeders' Cup with you and your family. In the last
race, the Classic, I picked the winner, Cat Thief, who was ridden
by Pat Day and took a nice little price. I took my winnings and
bought a Breeders' Cup poster that I still have hanging on my
wall in my house.
CC: Briefly explain why the NFL owns a network and the
advantages of having one when the sport is already so well
covered through other channels.
AR: I think for some other sports, it might make more sense as a
marketing tool. And it certainly is a marketing tool for the NFL as
well, but going all the way back to 2002 when the NFL decided
to start their own network, they were really trying to extend
their footprint into the off season and make the NFL 365 days a
year. Basically, bridge the gap between everything that happens
between the Super Bowl and the next time the regular season
kicks off. The Scouting Combine is a perfect example of the type
of off-season event the NFL has built using NFL Network.
CC: A change in the sports landscape is the advent of legalized
betting. How does NFL Network plan on addressing the
growth of legalized betting on its platform?
AR: For a very, very long time the league had a pretty strong
stance against gambling to protect the integrity of the game.
And to be sure, that stance on protecting the integrity of the
game hasn't changed. At the same time, obviously the reality is
that the landscape is changing in the United States towards
sports betting and of course, we need to adapt to that. Clearly a
lot of our media partners are asking us how comfortable we are
with them talking about things like point spreads. I'd say it's an
ongoing evolution.
CC: Speaking of changes, what do you see as major trends
outside of legalized betting that would affect the television
landscape?
AR: Obviously we're in the midst of the COVID pandemic, and
that's changed so many things. To me, the best example of
something that could have a long-lasting change is how we had
to adapt for the NFL Draft, which for the first time ever had to
be done completely remotely. Cont. p13

The Commissioner was in his basement and all the coaches
and GMs around the league were at home. There was definitely
some trepidation about whether we were going to be able to
pull it off, not only from a technological standpoint, but if fans
would enjoy it. We found that it worked extremely well. We had
very few issues on the technological side and the feedback was
that fans enjoyed seeing people in their homes in this type of
presentation. From a production standpoint I think that's going
to change a lot of how things are done across the entertainment
industry in general.
CC: How has COVID changed your business and operations at
NFL Network?
AR: I think that we're going to find various efficiencies in the
way that we do business because of this experience, and there
will probably be permanent changes in the way that media is
produced. Now that we've gone through this whole experience,
there's going to be some major changes for the better, and
certainly that are going to be cost-effective changes going
forward.
CC: I'm sure everyone is asking, but obviously you have a
season coming upon you pretty quickly. How do you control
that message with the uncertainty around how the season will
be conducted?
AR: I think the NFL has been fortunate on the timing of this
because we've been able to see how others ports that needed
to go before us have reacted. We're a couple weeks away from
training camps opening. All along Commissioner Goodell has
been very solid about, "Hey, we're going to start the season."
We're going to obviously listen to all the medical experts and
we're going to adjust as we need to, but we still feel very
confident about having the season. There may just be a few
wrinkles along the way.
The big question is really how many fans are going to be able
to attend some of these games. I think some of that is going to
be determined by different state regulations. I know some news
is already starting to come out in places like Kansas City, where
they've already said that they're not going to have full stadiums.
I think probably some places will be empty, and some places
you'll have partial fans. It remains to be seen.
CC: The NFL, like many other sports, has challenging issues to
address, whether it be about health issues with concussions,
violence with domestic abuse and cultural revolutions like the
BLM movement. Do you have a philosophy or best practice on
how to address challenging issues?
AR: When big issues come up, the NFL and Commissioner
Goodell often look at it as an opportunity to take a leadership
position in society and make some very positive change.
Sometimes we're directly involved in it, for instance the Ray Rice
domestic violence issue that obviously brought the problem of
domestic abuse to the forefront. I think we've tried to be very
thoughtful about how we respond to it.
The best thing you can do is try to stick to your values.
Although the NFL has caught a lot of criticism for things, I do
honestly believe that they have a good set of values and
priorities. And when we get to these issues that bubble up, I
sincerely think that we try to do the right thing and try to
convey that through our communications practices. If there's
issues that need to be addressed and fixed, we try to do that as
quickly and fairly as possible.
CC: How do you manage covering negative stories about the
sport or league when you own the network?
AR: That is a question that we get all the time, and there is
definitely a balance between strictly being a PR mouthpiece for
the League and then being a Hard News organization. I can tell
you that a lot of folks that work for NFL Network and our digital
properties in Los Angeles are long-time journalists that have
broken a lot of big stories at other outlets and they certainly
aren't here just to be regurgitating press releases from the NFL.
At the same time, I think everybody understands that we are
owned and operated by the NFL. The general line that we try to
stay on is we will report the newsB both the good, the bad and
the ugly. I think if you look at some other outlets dealing with
negative news, they will go on for hours speculating about it.
NFL Network is going to report the news as long as it's relevant
and as long as there are confirmed facts, but we're going to stay
very factual. We're not going to speculate and obsess for hours.
CC: Horse racing has had its fair share of negative coverage in
the last few years. If you were running the PR strategy for the
sport, what would your suggestions be on how to address
these matters?
AR: I don't have a vast depth of knowledge of the sport, but
being in Los Angeles and close to Santa Anita I have heard a lot
about the health and safety issues the sport has faced. I don't
know if you can draw any parallels to the issues that the NFL has
had on the player health and safety front with concussions, but I
know for Commissioner Goodell and everybody on down, our
number one priority, no matter what we're talking about, is the
health and safety of our players. I can=t speak to if that has been
mare the number one priority in horse racing in terms of not
only the horse, but the jockeys as well.
From my standpoint, you really need to make sure that these
tracks have the latest state-of-the-art safety measures.

There need to be regulations in terms of medications these
horses are being given. I think making the health and safety of
the horses and their riders a priority has got to be something
that is at the forefront of every decision that=s made in the
industry.
CC: What are the unique traits about the sport of horse racing
that need to be exploited by stakeholders to promote and
introduce their sport to a larger audience?
AR: I don=t think it=s any secret that the sport of horse racing is
tightly intertwined with sports gambling, and it does have the
benefit of being something that is available pretty much every
day at any time. So as sports gambling continues to become
more prominent across the United States, there is an
opportunity for the horse racing industry to piggyback off of the
increased popularity in sports betting and see if the rising tide of
that can help lift their boat as well, so to speak.
CC: Is there a business mistake that you try to avoid at all
costs?
AR: A lot of what I do is constant communication with the
media--whether that=s texting with reporters, phone calls or
trading emails with them. Those relationships can be harmed
pretty seriously if you=re not up front with them, or if you don=t
deal with them in a way that is fair. I=ve probably made that
mistake over the years and I=ve definitely learned from it.
You=re not going to always be able to tell the media everything
that they want to know, but if you=re honest and you let them
know the reasons why you can=t speak to a certain thing or that
you need to avoid the subject, I think you=ll always have their
trust. Having that trust, transparency and honesty with the
media is something that=s not only important to me, but it=s
something that can be translated into other industries and
relationships that people have in business.
CC: What=s the best advice you have received on how to be
good at PR-related issues?
AR: It was from a former boss who used to say, AIf you have to
eat@--well, let=s just call it horse manure. AIf you have to eat
horse manure, don=t nibble.@ And what he meant by that is if
you have some bad news, don=t try to downplay it or put a little
of it out there at a time. Instead, just go ahead and rip the band-
aid off, get it all out there at once. The quicker you get out there
and the quicker you own up to it, if that=s what the case is, the
sooner that you can start to move forward and not suffer a
death by a thousand cuts.
CC: If you were the commissioner of horse racing, what would
you look to change to improve the image or perception of the
sport to reach a new audience?
AR: Well look, I don=t pretend to know all the distribution and
media deals that racing has. I do see racing on NBC Sports and
FS1. Of course there are networks like TVG that focus on the
product seven days a week, but they=re also owned by a third
party. It is unfortunate that the sport does not have its own
platform to generate content focused on fan development and a
channel to entertain avid fans not exclusively through the lens
of wagering, but the story-telling side of the game.
I know in this environment where there are a million different
ways to consume content, it can be a challenge to cut through
the clutter. But I think for horse racing, if it=s going to continue
to grow and be more popular, it=s not only the sports gambling
angle on it, but they really need to increase their distribution on
all forms of media platforms and have better control of its
message and the content that is being disseminated.
If you look at the horse racing fan base, it=s considered a sport
that attracts an older generation. A big challenge for horse
racing stakeholders is how are they going to develop that new
generation of fans? Which is going to be important and frankly,
something that we face at the NFL. When you look at kids now,
they have so many options. So how can we get in front of that
younger generation and get them interested in what our sport is
or what our entertainment is? When we think about that as the
NFL, we think a lot about our presence on social media.
So, what is horse racing doing about social media? Because
let=s be honest, that=s the way a lot of kids consume content
these days. I think some of the older generation is a little
dismissive of those social media platforms, but they are
important for getting in front of a younger generation, which
again is the first step towards building fans for the future

Media distribution, control of content platforms like a network
and a vibrant presence on social media are all important things
that horse racing needs to lean into, with the overarching value
of never compromising on the health and safety of equine and
human athletes at the forefront of it all.

SUPER SAVER COLT STAYS TWO TURNS;
EARNS RISING STARDOM AT SARATOGA Wertheimer and Frere homebred Happy Saver (Super Saver)
made good on a flashy debut last month and handled nine
panels at Saratoga like he was just getting going to garner the
>TDN Rising Star= moniker Sunday afternoon. The Todd Pletcher
pupil aired by 5 1/2 lengths at first asking going seven furlongs
at Belmont June 20, and was even-money against a solid-looking
group of winners this time around. He broke alertly, but was
out-footed into the first turn and took up a ground-saving spot
in third. Ridden along to avoid getting shuffled back into the
second bend after a :48.25 half, he looked briefly like he might
be coming up empty as Irad Ortiz, Jr. was all over him to get
going as noses pointed for home. Happy Saver tipped out wide
while figuring out his leads, soon found another gear and kicked
on with a flourish to inhale Beau Luminarie (I Want Revenge)
and canter away a geared-down four-length winner in 1:49.93.
AHe=s been training great--he=s [GI Belmont S. runner-up and
GI Haskell S. third] Dr Post (Quality Road)=s workmate and
they=ve been working head and head, so we had confidence that
his first out [effort] was legitimate,@ Pletcher told Acacia
Courtney on the Saratoga Live broadcast. AYou=re always a little
concerned when you=re stretching out off of one race to a mile
and an eighth, but he=d trained really well and he=s got a great
personality--he=s very relaxed. I got a little worried around the
first turn, it got a little crowded and we weren=t exactly where
we thought we=d be, but he seemed settled and I was really
impressed with his last eighth of a mile.@
While Pletcher acknowledged that the GI Runhappy Travers S.
in two weeks would likely come up too quickly, he mentioned
the GII Jim Dandy S. Sept. 5 as a possible next spot for Happy
Saver.
The winner=s dam, Happy Week (Distorted Humor), was a MSP
sprinter for these connections and was disqualified from a third-
place run in the 2011 GII Shuvee H. over a one-turn mile. She
produced a Candy Ride (Arg) filly in 2019 and sold for $30,000 to
John Ropes at last year=s Keeneland November sale carrying a
full-sister to Happy Saver. Happy Saver=s third dam is Weekend

NYQUIST FILLY RELISHES STRETCH OUT TO
BECOME SIRE=S FIRST WINNER C&H Diamond Racing LLC & Baccari Racing Stable=s Dream
Quist (Nyquist) improved significantly on the stretch out at Ellis
Sunday to become the first winner for her freshman sire (by
Uncle Mo). A debut fifth as the favorite sprinting in the Churchill
slop June 28, the $265,000 Fasig-Tipton October yearling was off
as the 5-2 second choice this time, but was bumped from both
sides leaving the gate. She moved up in between horses to sit
perched in third and tugged her way up to challenge the
pacesetter heading for home after a half in :48 flat. She started
to wear down the frontrunner at the quarter pole, and spurted
clear as they straightened to kick away convincingly by
3 3/4 lengths. Odds-on favorite Bahama Mischief (Into Mischief),
a $300,000 KEESEP yearling who was a close second on debut at
Churchill June 26, rallied to complete the chalky exacta.
Dream Quist, who sold on the final day of the final major
yearling sale of 2019, is out of a mare who earned a 95 Beyer
Speed Figure when taking a Lone Star sprint stakes race as a July
juvenile.

horses--especially on turf--is well documented, and he proved to
be the Aright@ Ward while providing his first-crop sire (by Uncle
Mo) with a second winner and first on the lawn. Irad Ortiz, Jr.
had ridden Outadore=s stablemate River Tiber (War Front) to a
fourth-place run on debut at Belmont June 12, but landed on
Outadore this time off a fairly unassuming worktab and it was
soon clear why. Away well in typical Ward fashion, Outadore
chased two-time runner-up filly Mad Maddy (American
Pharoah) through an opening quarter in :21.63 and half in
:44.77. The grey had his head cocked towards the stands a bit as
he challenged for command in upper stretch, and he took over
while racing greenly before pulling away to a 2 3/4-length
graduation. Mad Maddy held off River Tiber to be second.
Outadore is half to Piedi Bianchi (Overanalyze), MSW &
MGISP, $476,700. His dam, who was at one point claimed for
$12,500 before finishing a close third at long odds turf sprinting
in the 2007 Buffalo Trace Franklin County S. at Keeneland, is a
half to a stakes-winning juvenile who was second in the 2012
GII Adirondack S. over the local main track. Outwork was also
responsible for the debuting runner-up in Sunday=s second race,
a maiden special weight for New York-breds on the dirt.
Outadore is bred on a version of the same Uncle Mo over
Storm Cat as Sunday=s Ellis romper Dream Quist (Nyquist). Sales

bay found his best stride in midstretch to out-kick Silver Token

EFFINITY (c, 2, Effinex--Letshootpool {SP, $154,147}, by Freud)
was runner-up while facing state-bred company in his five-
furlong debut at Belmont Park June 19. The even-money
favorite pressed the pace three wide through an opening
quarter in :23.36, grabbed the lead after a half in :46.85 and
strode clear to graduate by four lengths. He is the first winner
for his Grade I-winning freshman sire Effinex (Mineshaft), who
died in 2017. Work Out (Outwork), at 11-1 the longest shot on
the board, was second.
Effinity was a $10,000 FTNMIX weanling and a $60,000

FRIAR'S ROAD (c, 3, Quality Road--My Sugar Bear, by Giant's
Causeway), last seen finishing sixth in the GI Runhappy Santa
Anita Derby June 6, uncorked a big turn move to break through
back in the maiden ranks Sunday. Fifth sprinting behind MGSW
Thousand Words (Pioneerof the Nile) at Santa Anita last
October, the bay resurfaced to be second going a mile in Arcadia
Mar. 15, earning an 87 Beyer Speed Figure behind the well-
regarded Shooters Shoot (Competitive Edge). He was second
again over nine panels at Oaklawn May 2 and earned a similar
speed figure in the June 6 Santa Anita Derby, only against much
tougher foes. Installed as the even-money while drawn to the
far outside, Friar=s Road broke slowly and was hung wide around
the first turn towards the back of the pack. He got plenty of pace
to set up his late kick despite camped out off cover, and was
given his cue by Victor Espinoza to get going around the turn for
home. He challenged for command at the top of the lane, and
while briefly looking like he might have run out of gas, called on
his class to edge away in the final sixteenth by 1 1/2 lengths.
Charlito (Fed Biz), a $725,000 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream grad,
completed the exacta of high-dollar horses. The winner is
campaigned by the same connections as $5.6-million City of

fourth on the Delaware sod July 15. Backed down to 7-10 this

route to a 2 3/4-length victory over longshot firster
Morethanaconqueror (Artie Schiller). The winner=s 2-year-old

MAGICAL STROLLS INSECOND GOLD CUP
With racemares like Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), there is a
sense of point-and-shoot and Wayne Lordan had little trouble in
steering her to a sixth top-level success in Sunday=s G1
Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh. Sent to the front almost
from the outset, the 2-9 favourite merely had to repeat her
effort when winning the course-and-distance G1 Pretty Polly S.
June 28 and she gave generously to issue another beating to
over-matched rivals. Kicking off the home turn, she stayed on
strongly as expected as stablemate Sir Dragonet (Ire) (Camelot
{GB}) earned second, 2 1/4 lengths behind. He was in turn two
lengths ahead of last year=s G1 Irish St Leger heroine Search For
a Song (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who was putting up her best effort of
2020.
AIt went perfectly--she=s top-class,@ Lordan said. AShe=s very
straightforward and gets into a lovely rhythm--she went by the
line not in top gear. She=s a massive mare to ride and has a big,
powerful action so with a small field with not a whole lot of pace
I opted to keep it simple. I was riding the best horse and she=s
uncomplicated with a great attitude. As we know, she can fight
when she has to but she hasn=t had to in her last two starts.@
Were it not for Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), Magical would
have another three Group 1s to boast of and in this era of the
supermares she stands as one of the trailblazers for her sex.

HOLLIE DOYLE BECOMES RETAINED JOCKEY
FOR IMAD AL SAGAR Hollie Doyle has been appointed the retained jockey for ImadAl Sagar of Blue Diamond Stud. Al Sagar has been part owner ofClassic-winning colts turned sires Authorized (Ire) (Montjeu{Ire}) and Araafa (Ire) (Mull Of Kintyre), as well as MG1SWDecorated Knight (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) among others. AWe are thrilled to add Hollie Doyle to our team,@ said Al Sagarin a statement. AWe have all been impressed with how Holliehas risen to become one of the best of her profession. She is anextremely dedicated, strong and astute jockey. We have somelovely horses to run for us this season and I look forward toHollie becoming an invaluable member of our team.@ Added Doyle, AI am delighted to be teaming up with Imad AlSagar for the near future. I hope that we will have plenty ofsuccess.@ The Newmarket-based Blue Diamond Stud is home toapproximately 45 broodmares and there are an additional 30horses in training.

Wayne Lordan & Magical | Racing Post
G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup Cont. from p1
Her career has particularly taken off since September, when
she captured the first leg of a notable G1 Irish-English Champion
S. double at Leopardstown. Forcing connections into keeping her
in training for one more season, she now has four Group 1 wins
from her last five starts and has
justified that decision in no
uncertain terms. Now that she is
accustomed to making her own
running, it could be that she is
able to put it up to the
Juddmonte sensation the next
time their paths cross.
Lordan is of the opinion that the
change in tactics is beneficial.
AShe jumped and she bowled
away, she has a big easy action.
She made it the last day and
zinged along, today she was a
little bit more relaxed out there in front,@ he added. AI felt if
anyone got to me, it would only help me. From the minute you
sit on her till you get off, she feels like she has a presence. She=s
a high-quality filly and she is definitely up there with the top
ones, we know that by her form.@
Aidan O=Brien was at home and told the Racing Post, AShe is a
great mare. The only reason she is here now is because of the
progress she made over the winter and she had progressed
again from the Pretty Polly, so we are delighted the lads kept
her in training. She might get a little bit of an easy time of it
now, but the options would be
the [G1] Juddmonte International
and the [G1] Irish Champion S.
She could wait for the Irish
Champion, but we=ll see.@
Pedigree Notes Magical=s dam Halfway To
Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who
was bred by Trevor Stewart, won
the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, G1
Nassau S. and G1 Sun Chariot S.
and is making her own special
mark within the Coolmore
broodmare band. Covered by Galileo throughout her second
career, she has produced the G1 Lockinge S., G1 Fillies Mile and
G1 Prix de l=Opera heroine Rhododendron (Ire), as well as the
G3 International S. scorer Flying the Flag (Ire).

Halfway To Heaven is out of Stewart=s triple group-winning
sprinter Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), who also
produced the G3 Summer S. scorer Theann (GB) (Rock of

throwing the GI First Lady S. and GI Rodeo S. heroine Photo Call

scorer Land Force (Ire) (No Nay Never). Halfway To Heaven=s
daughter Tickled Pink (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) raced for her
owner-breeder and took the G3 Abernant S. and G3 Sandown
Sprint S.
The third dam Rahaam (Secreto) was responsible for the
notable sire Verglas (Ire) and the listed scorer Persian Secret (Fr)
(Persian Heights {GB}), who is the ancestress of several classy
performers. Her daughters Seba (GB) (Alzao) and Do the
Honours (Ire) (Highest Honor {Fr}) were decent types, with the
former capturing the Listed Chesham S. and finishing third in the
GI Mother Goose S. and Do the Honours winning the G3 Prix de

hero Cross Counter (GB) by Galileo=s son Teofilo (Ire). Halfway
To Heaven also has a yearling full-brother to Magical.

BARNEY ROY ON TOP IN BAVARIAN BATTLE Godolphin=s well-travelled Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration
{Ire}) began this latest European
campaign with a third in Royal
Ascot=s G1 Prince of Wales=s S. last
month and the gelded bay was all
heart to claim Sunday=s G1 Grosser
Dallmayr-Preis--Bayerisches
Zuchtrennen at Munich. The even-
money favourite sported
temporary headgear during the
preliminaries of the
10-furlong contest and the
soothing effect contributed to a
smooth passage off the clear
leaders in rear for the most part.
Making headway in the straight when ridden along with a
quarter-mile remaining, he joined the front rank, despite rolling
around, entering the final furlong and was driven out to earn a
third elite-level success in game fashion. Try as he might, last
term=s G1 Deutsches Derby fourth Quest The Moon (Ger) (Sea
The Moon {Ger}) could not find a way past in the latter stages
and was denied by a neck, with Joseph O=Brien-trained G3 Meld
S. victor Patrick Sarsfield (Fr) (Australia {GB}) running on well to
finish 1 1/4 lengths adrift in third.
AWe were a little concerned when the rain came this morning
as all of his best form is on fast
ground,@ said William Buick of the
2017 G1 St James=s Palace S. and
this year=s G1 Jebel Hatta hero. AI
thought the German horses set a
very good standard, it was a very
tough race and he struggled with
the conditions from a long way out.
He=s a high-class horse and his
courage and ability got him to win
the race. We thought the pace
would be good and he jumped a
little bit slow from the gates. We
were positioned one place further
back than where I wanted to be, but he was comfortable and
relaxed. I followed Quest The Moon as I knew he=d take me into
the race and I got a nice lead off him.@

Winning trainer Charlie Appleby added, "Barney Roy and
Spotify flew in yesterday and stabled well overnight, but we
came here looking for good-to-firm ground and the rain was a
negative for our two horses. There was a strong pace from the
start, the local horses ran very well and stamina really came into
play."
He continued, "I'd like to thank Munich for putting the race on
and allowing us to come. I'd also like to thank the sponsors very
much for sponsoring the race at such challenging times for
everybody. We're delighted to be here, at Group 1 level, for
Godolphin and very much appreciate everybody's support."
Pedigree Notes Barney Roy is the first of five foals and one of three winners
produced by a daughter of G3 Ridgewood Pearl S. and G3

LADY BOWTHORPE TAKES THE VALIANT BY
STORM Sunday=s G3 Betfred Valiant Fillies= S. may have been robbed
of Billesdon Brook (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) with the ground
gone against her, but as the race=s star turn fell away there was
at least an impressive winner in Lady Bowthorpe (GB)
(Nathaniel {Ire}) to boost the Ascot contest. Only fourth in
Pontefract=s Listed Pipalong S. last time July 7, the 12-1 shot was
anchored in last early by Kieran Shoemark and delivered a
potent surge in the straight to overhaul Miss O Connor (Ire)
(Roderic O=Connor {Ire}) approaching the furlong pole. Drawing
clear from there, she had 4 3/4 lengths to spare over Farzeen
(GB) (Farhh {GB}), who held off Look Around (GB) (Kingman
{GB}) by a head.
Trainer William Jarvis said, AShe=s been unlucky this season and
things didn=t really work out for her at Pontefract, but she=s very
smart and is the second-best filly in training in Newmarket by
Nathaniel! She swept by the whole field and was impressive.@

Lady Bowthorpe | Racing Post
G3 Betfred Valiant Fillies S. Cont.
Runner-up in mile handicaps at Sandown and Newmarket in
September and October, Lady Bowthorpe returned to win one
on the Polytrack at Lingfield June 6 before being denied a clear
run when sixth back at Newmarket June 28. While her latest
effort in the Pipalong was an improvement, there was little to
suggest that she was capable of a performance of this nature in
a race as competitive.
Jarvis revealed that he had some guidance. AI=ve always
thought she is good, but all credit to James Toller as he said we
should run her in this race. I prepared her and trained her and
he pushed me to go for the race,@ he explained. AShe hasn=t
quite achieved what we hoped she would, but she is owned by a
very patient owner. It is her first group winner and she is a
valuable filly now. She was drawn nine of nine at Pontefract
which was not great for her, but it has all come good for her
today.@
Pedigree Notes Lady Bowthorpe is the second foal out of Maglietta Fina (Ire)
(Verglas {Ire}), with the first being the high-class sprinter Speak
in Colours (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}). Already successful in the G3
Phoenix Sprint S. and G3 Renaissance S. and third in the G1 Prix
de la Foret before this term, he has now added the G2
Greenlands S. and G3 Ballycorus S. to his tally and is still on the
up. Her third is the 3-year-old filly Pretty In Grey (GB) (Brazen
Beau {Aus}), who looks a surefire black-type performer having
won four in a row including a Newmarket handicap on Saturday.
A half-sister to the G2 Sandown Mile, G3 Diomed S. and G3
Sovereign S. winner Tullius (Ire) (Le Vie Dei Colori {GB}), her 2-
year-old filly by Mayson (GB) unfortunately died last year but

SANTOSHA PROVIDES COULSTY
BREAKTHROUGH IN THE PRINCESS MARGARET
Providing another boost to the form of the July 10 G2 Duchess
of Cambridge S., Santosha (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}) stepped up to
capture Sunday=s G3 Princess Margaret Betfred S. at Ascot and
provide her Rathasker Stud-based first-season sire with his initial
black-type winner. Sent off at 5-1 coming off a third placing
behind the G3 Albany S. scorer Dandalla (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire})
and the subsequent Listed Star S. winner Fev Rover (Ire)
(Gutaifan {Ire}) in that contest at Newmarket=s July festival, the
bay was reserved off the early pace by Thomas Greatrex and
delivered to lead approaching the final furlong. Despite veering
left in the closing stages, she was always doing enough to hold
Hala Hala Hala (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) by 3/4 of a length,
with the winner=s stablemate Caroline Dale (GB) (Lethal Force
{Ire}) the same margin behind in third.
Trainer David Loughnane was enjoying his red-letter day. AIt=s
great to have my first group winner at Ascot. It=s the Mecca, isn=t
it, everyone wants to train winners here,@ he commented. AWe
work very hard and we have had a lot of luck along the way, but
it=s the icing on the cake that our first group winner is here.@
Santosha, the sole progeny out of a relative of Gold Academy
(Ire) who captured the Listed Strensall S. and was third in the G1
Queen Elizabeth II S. and G1 St. James=s Palace S., went up
against Dandalla and co as the 50-1 winner of a six-furlong
median auction novice at Lingfield June 26. Also 50-1 there, she
got within 3/4 of a length of a major upset and could arguably
have been closer had the winner not veered across her path late
on. Staying true to Thomas Greatrex, Loughnane=s decision was
rewarded by a ride belying a lack of experience in this company
as Santosha was guided to a breakthrough success.
The occasion was not lost on the jockey, who said, AIt is what
we work towards. It is something I never really thought I would
be doing and it=s great to get the opportunity from Dave and the
team at home support me a lot, so it=s great to give them a
group winner. We got a lovely run into the race and she has
really stuck her head down and galloped. She got a bit lonely in
front in the end, but she was brilliant. Stepping up in trip will be
no problem at all--she stayed really well. I was running in
snatches during the race, but once I got hold of her at the
two-furlong pole she actually went down a gear and took off.@
Loughnane was celebrating a rare first and third in Pattern
company for a lesser-known trainer, with Caroline Dale holding
on for third having forced the pace. AI sat on them both
Wednesday or Thursday morning and I told both owners I
wouldn=t be able to split them,@ he added. ACaroline Dale=s run a
blinder. She has got headed and she has stayed on and galloped
all the way to the line. She is a very tough filly and has got so
much speed. Hindsight=s a great thing and maybe we should
have gone for the [G3] Molecomb S. [at Goodwood], but this felt
like the right race. She will have her day. The ground was
probably quick enough for Santosha. The race ran to suit her just
a little bit better.@
ASantosha should never have been the price she was--my
surname might have something to do with it, but we are looking
to change that. She was still a touch green today, but she is a
very progressive filly and we=ve got a lot to look forward to. I
think she will probably be a nicer filly next year, stepping her up
to seven furlongs and a mile. She travels so sweetly, she never
overdoes herself. She does what you want her to do and is
push-button. Today was the plan, but the [G2] Lowther [at York]
would have to be one of the next on her list. There are quite a
few options in France for her.@ Cont. p8

ENABLE EXITS KING GEORGE WELL Fresh off the back of her 5 1/2-length victory in the G1 King
George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. on Saturday, Enable (GB)
(Nathaniel {Ire}) emerged from the Ascot showpiece in good
condition, trainer John Gosden confirmed.
The next start for the formidable Juddmonte colourbearer is
undecided, but she is targeting a pair of races at York--either the
Aug. 19 G1 Juddmonte International S. or the Aug. 20 G1
Yorkshire Oaks. The former features a rematch with Ghaiyyath
(Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), while the outstanding dual Classic heroine
Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is slated to take part in the latter. The
Coolmore representative demolished the G1 Investec Oaks field
by nine lengths on July 4 and will receive a break in the weights.
A two-time winner of the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe, Enable=s
12-race winning streak was snapped with a runner-up
performance in very soft ground in last year=s Arc, and she found
Ghaiyyath 2 1/4 lengths too good on the day in the G1 Coral-
Eclipse S. at Sandown last time.
"Enable is in good form,@ trainer John Gosden told the Ascot
Racecourse notes team on Sunday morning of his triple King
George winner. AShe ate up and had a nice lead-out, jogged up
well, had a pick of grass. I was clear that she wasn't wound up
for the Eclipse, and I didn't see the point of jumping out the gate
and trying to go head to head with Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire})
first time out--I didn't think that would be any help to her, so
she ran great and she has come on for the race."
QATAR GOODWOOD FESTIVAL TO UTILISE
TURFTRAX The upcoming Qatar Goodwood Festival will provide live
weather data from TurfTrax, the Cambridgeshire-based
technology company announced on Sunday. Developed in
conjunction with a number of leading UK racecourses, the
system provides horsemen, media and the general public with
up-to-the minute GoingStick readings, going maps, irrigation and
rails positions, as well as detailed live weather data comprising
wind speed and direction, rainfall and soil moisture content via a
dedicated webpage. This technology was previous used with
success at Royal Ascot and Newmarket=s July Cup Festival.
AWe have been delighted with the response to the live
weather data app so far,@ said TurfTrax Managing Director Mike

He added, AThere certainly seems to be increasing demand for
accurate data and the benefit of the TurfTrax weather system is
that the information it measures comes direct from the course
and not a weather station in the nearest town which could be
several miles away.
AThe information delivered by the app has been available to
racecourses using the TurfTrax weather system for a number of
years, but investment in the front-end now enables them to
make the same information available to a wider group of
stakeholders.@

pace in rear until turning for home, the odds-on favourite made
stealthy headway in the straight to launch her challenge wide
approaching the quarter-mile marker and was ridden out to
deny Gold Wand after a prolonged duel with that rival.
AWe didn=t actually go that fast and it turned into a two or

THUNDER BEAUTY (IRE) (f, 2, Night of Thunder {Ire}--Quiania
{Ire}, by Dansili {GB}), a 12-1 shot on this debut, broke well and
was professional racing towards the fore throughout the early
stages. Gaining a narrow advantage approaching the furlong
pole, the bay lugged left and bumped Harannda (Ire) (Invincible

success and was allowed to keep the race by the stewards.
Elizabethan (War Front), the daughter of Misty For Me (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}) and full-sister to U S Navy Flag and Roly Poly, was
unable to land a serious blow in seventh. AWe seem to have a
nice bunch of 2-year-olds, particularly fillies, and she had been
showing up well in the past three or four weeks,@ trainer Ken
Condon said. AIn the spring, she was showing a lot of pace but
just got a little bit of a setback. She had a problem with her
wither and needed a bit of time. She=s from a staying German
family and it might not have been any harm that she had an
enforced break for a while. We hope she=s stakes class and she=s
by a very good sire. She has a very professional way of doing it
and she went to the line strongly, so I=d say seven should be

clear of toiling rivals in the straight and maintained a high tempo
to easily hold the rally of Stardevote for a career high. Cont. p13
