RETRIEVERS FLUSHING DOGS
Retrievers, flushing dogs and water dogs are the three types of canine that make up the FCI
Retrievers group, (which happens to be eighth of the
ten categorisations).
Originally, the retriever was bred to retrieve game without damaging it.
Hence their soft mouths and ability to please, learn and obey...though some
owners may of course disagree!
Flushing dogs are a type of gun dog bred to flush out game, drawing the attention of the
hunter to the location of the game, rather than actually retrieving it, like the aptly named
retrievers.
Water dogs are even easier to remember - they’re a gun dog bred to retrieve game from water. These include the Chesapeake Bay Retriever and the pleasingly named Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, the latter which is pictured below. Time to get learning, I think!
