Save the Malayan Tiger with
kindness is like yoga
It’s healthy, it nourishes us
outside and in, it feels
good and it takes practice!
Karma yoga retreats
provide an opportunity to
flex those kindness
muscles whilst reaping the
benefits of a regular yoga
practice in a beautiful,
natural setting, soaking up
the local culture and giving
back to the community.
Love tigers? Enjoy yoga? Fancy an adventure that will boost your karmaand invigorate your body and soul?
Practice Karma Yoga or ‘selfless service’ in the Malaysian rainforest as you share
English and conservation knowledge with the indigenous Batek tribe and help to
protect endangered species, including tigers, leopards, elephants, rhinos, tapirs
and sun bears.
Malaysia has a tiger population second only to India. These magnificent
creatures and many other species are dependent on the ‘wildlife corridor’ – the
last rainforest connection between Taman Negara National Park and the Main Range in West Malaysia. This project, a collaboration between Ecoteer and
MYCAT, aims to reduce poaching in this area to allow safe passage for these
animals on this critical highway.
As you trek through the lush jungle, your sheer presence acts as a deterrent to
poachers and you will also be collecting valuable data as you learn to decipher
animal tracks and signs. You will discover the region’s limestone caves and visit
a local tribal village, learning about their lifestyle and teaching their children
Conservation English. The Batek are the eyes and ears of the forest and their
participation is vital in protecting the wildlife corridor.
To deepen your spiritual connection with the forest you will begin and end each
day with yoga asana practice, restoring your body after the daily trekking and
encouraging a heightened awareness of the world both within and around you.
• contribute – track and protect tigers and other wild animals by deactivating poachers’ snares and share conservation knowledge and English skills with the local Batek tribe• practice – twice daily yoga to keep your mind and body perfectly tuned for your daily adventures• explore – a truly wild rainforest region, plus spend half a day searching for paintings in the limestone caves

Past volunteers’ commentsI spent a week on this programme and my group was made up of 7 volunteers aged 19-40 something and we were a mix of English, Chinese and Singaporean. We spent 5 nig hts in single-sex dorm rooms in a small, basic chalet. Had access to everything you needed like a a shower, Malay + western style toilets, wifi and a little kitchen and lounge area. The place was clean and I felt really safe. The owners and their friends were always popping in and out and they're all really friendly and welcoming. One nig ht was spent camping in the rainforest, tents / hammocks are provided. We went to the local store at the start of the week for supplies for breakfast and we had access to drinking and boiling water, tea, coffee etc. lunch was delivered every morning for us. It was always rice and chicken or fish with a sauce and it was delicious! Dinner we ate at a local restaurant every evening which served Malay food. No complaints, I liked it all!We spent 4 days walking throug h the rainforest, following poacher trails and looking for animal prints and general signs of animal presence. The treks were long , up to 7 hours, and some of them were quite physically demanding so I'd say you need a relatively good level of fitness to be able to enjoy it. The leaders from mycat were really helpful, paitent and knowledgable throug hout all of the walks. The hig hlig ht for me was the English lesson. The teenagers/ young adults that came to our lesson were really keen to learn from us so it was really fulfilling I'd never done anything like this before, I didnt really realise what I was going to be putting myself throug h (long , tiring walks) but I ended up having an unforgettable week. I feel like the work we did was beneficial and ive come away from it with a bunch of new friends and knowledge so I'd definitely recommend it, just be prepared for your clothes to get destroyed and your body to be dinner to leeches!
