The PasTor’s Desk

Dear Friends,May the Lord give you peace!

(The Pastor’s Desk is continued next column)

Pace e Bene,

Fr. Frank Sevola, OFM, PastorFr. Frank can be reached at [email protected]

We are certainly well into the Season of Lent and hopefully by now you have made your Lenten resolutions. In case you haven’t, or if you are looking for something additional, I have some ideas for you. You may remember these from last year, they are worth repeating. So throughout the season I will print the suggestions for the upcoming week in my Pastor’s Desk. Here are the suggestions for March 1 through March 7. Sunday: Do something fun and special with your family at home. Monday: Offer help to people in need all day. Tuesday: Smile at everyone and anyone all the time. Wednesday: Bring home something special for everyone. Thursday: Pick up trash wherever you go. Friday: Pray for your family, the church and friends. Saturday: Give away things and clothes that you do not need. These are terrific and simple ways to deepen your relationships with the people around you and ultimately with God, and that’s what Lent is all about!

The gospel for this Second Sunday of Lent is the story of the Transfiguration. This is the great story of Jesus taking Peter, James and John to the top of the mountain to pray. During that time, he is transfigured before them and they see Jesus in all his glory as the Son of God.

The story of the Transfiguration that we hear today is the story of a passage. It is the story of the passage of Jesus from the ordinary to the glorified. It is the story of the passage of Peter. It is the story of the passage of you and me. Peter wants to freeze the perfect moment. He wants to erect those booths so that the perfect moment he experienced along with the others will never go away. Sisters and brothers, how often have we tried to freeze those perfect moments? Haven’t you wished that a perfect evening could last forever? Don’t you wish that youth could last forever? Don’t you wish that the promise of new love could last forever?

None of those things last forever. Not in their original forms, anyway. No, sisters and brothers, we must experience the passages of life. We must revise our dreams. We must let go of what is no longer good for us. We must move on when the time comes. We can’t freeze the perfect moments. We have to allow ourselves to go through the passages of life. We have to allow ourselves to be transformed, and sooner or later we realize that there will be many perfect evenings, that age has many advantages over youth and that the promise of new love may just turn out to be an eternity of love. The Transfiguration is Jesus in glory. We read this story as people who believe in the Resurrection. We know how the passage is going to be for Jesus. We know the tragedy of death and the triumph of the Resurrection. We know that Jesus’ passage is ultimately successful and glorious. We can’t say the same thing about our own passages. We don’t know how they will turn out. All we know is that we must allow them to happen. We must welcome the ups and downs in our lives. We must accept the challenges and work at the solutions. By doing this, sisters and brothers, I truly believe that we will be

transfigured and ultimately glorified. By allowing yourself to be transfigured you will ultimately rest comfortably with the people who love and understand you - and you will discover once again how much God loves you.

Don’t forget about this year’s Parish Mission; it starts tomorrow (Monday)! Fr. Joe will present Exploring the Fifth Gospel, a reflection on his time in the Holy Land. There are many other great spiritually enriching programs being offered during Lent. Check the rest of the bulletin for all the details.

Please don’t forget about Operation Starfish! Operation Starfish is a great program that the whole family can participate in. Teach your children about fasting, almsgiving and prayer and encourage them to offer some loose change at the end of the week. Last year the parish raised $6,176. Wouldn’t it be great if we could raise $10,000 this year for our Outreach Ministries? That would make an incredible difference to the many people we help all year long. Thank you for your commitment to the needy and for your generosity to Operation Starfish!

Finally, I am happy to tell you that we will celebrate a bi-lingual mass on Sunday, March 8, at 9 AM in church. The Spanish speaking and English speaking communities will come together to celebrate the 3rd Sunday of Lent and give thanks to God for our unity as one, diverse St. Mary’s community. Please join us!Thanks for a great week and best wishes for a great one to come!

The Eighth Grade class entered the Law Adventure Competition sponsored by the New Jersey Bar Foundation. This is a Mock Trial Competition. Mock Trial immerses students in the law by allowing them to portray traditional

courtroom roles. To enter the competition, our students, under the direction of Mrs. Cedrone, were required to write and submit an original case based on school and/or community-based sports team liability as a civil case. The students chose the sports theme and wrote a case entitled The Case of the Flying Bat, Battington vs. Nimble. The case was written after much research and with the advice of several attorneys. Our students are awaiting the results of the competition, which will be released in late March.
