Retaining Wall SystemsArmtec entered the retaining wallmarket in 1934 with the Bin-WallGravity Retaining Wall System.

Since those historic beginnings,Armtec has not stood still, but hascontinually improved its in-houseretaining wall systems and as appropriate, Armtec has added newland recovery systems which utilizegeosynthetics.

Today, Armtec is able to provide thecontractor, owner and consultingengineer with numerous optionswhen selecting a retaining wall orgeosynthetic reinforced slope.

Steel Based SystemsArmtec has three steel retaining wallsystems.

Sheet PilingArmtec manufactures a lightweightmetric sheeting profile that can be used in cantilever or tie-back configurations. Typical applicationsare shore protection, headwalls andcutoff walls as well as trenchshoring. Armtec’s unique profile optimizes the balance between light-weight, strength and drivability. Thisinterlock sheeting is available in

several thicknesses and finishes, including hot dip galvanized.

Bin-WallAfter seven decades of use, Armtec’sBin-Wall has evolved into the mostversatile gravity retaining wall systemin Canada. Formed from lightweightcorrugated galvanized components, this modular system has been used innumerous applications includingbridge abutments, shore protection, supporting road and railways, marinas, loading ramps, solid wastetransfer units and jet blast walls atmilitary bases. Bin-Walls are readilytransported and assembled in anylocation. Its design is resistant tohigh or differential settlements.

It has also been used with alternativefacings such as timber and pre-castconcrete.

Bridge-PlateIn lieu of steel sheeting, Bridge-Platecan also be employed as a headwallor cut-off wall.

Geosynthetic Based SystemsArmtec has been providing geosynthetic solutions to theCanadian civil engineering and construction markets since 1983.Today, Armtec is able to offer numerous retaining wall and steepened slope solutions.

Steepened SlopesGeosynthetic reinforced over-steepened slopes, reinforced withuni-axial geogrids or high strengthwoven geotextiles, are often able to substitute for retaining walls at asubstantial cost saving. These structures are often constructedusing native fill materials and arefinished with a vegetated fascia.

Gravity WallsGravity retaining walls can be built quickly on less than ideal soilsutilizing Geoweb®’s CellularConfinement System. One of themore common systems actually utilizes two infill materials. Theexposed Geoweb cells are infilledwith topsoil, then planted with anappropriate flora. The balance of the

cells are infilled with free draininggranular materials. Depending uponthe customer’s colour preference, theGeoweb facing can be supplied ingreen, tan or a standard black.

Composite WallsGeosynthetic reinforced retainingwalls continue to grow in popularity. These retaining walls combinegeogrid soil reinforcement with a

variety of facing options, to create a reinforced soil mass capable ofresisting the driving forces.

Pre-cast concrete block facings, combined with geogrid reinforcementare particularly popular in urbanareas. Numerous composite retainingwalls have been built in Canada usingMirafi® XT Geogrid as the reinforce-ment and shallow Geoweb panels asthe fascia.

Vegetated Wire WallsThe combination of a wire basket facing, secondary reinforcementwrap, and primary geogrid soil reinforcement produces a green over-steepened slope. These systems arecost-effective while providing an aesthetically pleasing structure. The geogrid reinforcement providestensile strength to the slope whilethe facing systems provides long-term vegetation growth controllingerosion at the face. The wall facescan be seeded conventionally, hydro-seeded, sodded or sprigged.

Rock Faced Wire WallsThe combination of a wire basket facing, biaxial geogrid, and primarysoil reinforcement produces anaggregate facing. These systems arecost-effective and reliable. AggregateFaced Systems are best suited forstructure geometries that are toosteep to support vegetation and forareas like detention ponds wherehard armor protection is required.Aggregate Faced Systems may be more economical than vegetated slopes depending on proximity to

aggregate quarries.

Temporary WallsGeotextile wrapped faced retainingwalls are an outstanding solutionwhen temporary roadway protectionis required.

The use of jumping forms and geotextile reinforcement make for a very economical installed cost. If site conditions warrant, the wallcan be simply left in place and buried as needed, thus eliminatingthe cost of removal.

SummaryIn addition to providing design services, retaining wall system components and on-site assistanceduring construction, Armtec can provide the drainage, filtration and erosion control componentsoften required in retaining wall andsteepened slope applications.

Regardless of your requirements,Armtec has a retaining wall system tomeet your site-specific parameterswhether aesthetics, infill materials, differential settlement, shipping

constraints, high loads, impact resistance or the need for vegetatedfascia govern.

Armtec Retaining Wall Systems arenot limited to those outlined. Contactyour local Armtec sales office to discuss your particular application.
