SUMMARY: O2 (UK) deploys a number of VET antennas in the network build programme.

These antennas require special procedures and tools when deployed, and when

future optimisation is required. Currently all VET UMTS antennas are

supplied by Kathrein, Jaybeam and Powerwave and Argus. This Datasheet

defines the installation and software configuration of VET antennas using the

Kathrein handheld Portable Control Adaptor (PCA), and also gives details for

configuring the NSN MHA (AISG WMHD version). It should also be noted that

use of the old Sigma VET control software is not longer approved for use on

any O2 antenna system.

This Datasheet (V3.3) has been updated with information regarding VET

Motor configuration for UMTS 900 deployment (Page 8, Paragraph 7)

Target Audience This Datasheet is intended for use by anyone required to install or work on O2 UK

RF antenna line systems.

General Information VET installation work may only be performed by suitably trained personnel. All

rigging engineers must have access to the correct software tools and fully understand

all commissioning and set up procedures prior to working on any AISG controlled

antenna or MHA system

When installing VET antennas, the following items will be required, in addition to

the normal antenna installation tools:-

1. Kathrein Handheld PCA box, part number 860 10046, as shown below

2. VET Control cables of required length (See “VET Control Cable” section

below)

3. VET Cable termination box (See “VET Cable Termination Box” Section

below)

4. Laptop PC with Kathrein Version 2.1.1 PCA Software, with Device Data file

version 2.02. Note: It is important that the software versions given are used, as

antennas currently being deployed by O2 will not be able to be controlled by

earlier versions of software.

VET Antenna Use A VET antenna will generally be the standard antenna type deployed, therefore the

only use of fixed tilt antennas are on legacy deployments and when needed for

maintenance replacement. Although VET antennas will be deployed, a VET motor

and associated leads may not always be required. The guidelines given here are to

assist Radio Planners and build contractors as to when it is appropriate to deploy

antenna which can be remotely tilted

In general, an antenna must be deployed as remote tilt unless the antenna may be

manually optimised using the following guidelines:-

1) No outage is required for any antenna on site

2) The antenna is accessible by a person who is not a qualified rigger

3) The antenna can be accessed with no “access fees” payable i.e. sites such as

Arqiva often incur a charge for access. In this situation, remote VET antennas

should be deployed, even if they follow the above guidelines, as long as the

VET box can be accessed without incurring charges.

In general, this will only apply to rooftop sites where the antenna may be easily

accessed by a non rigger person

VET Control Cable A VET antenna installation will be any combination of single band, Multiband or

Triband antennas on any given site. Each antenna may either use a separate control

cable, or 2 or more antennas may be “Daisy chained” together, using control cables

looped from one antenna to the next, with one main cable back to the BTS

equipment.

Antennas from different manufactures, and of different operating frequencies may be

mixed on site, and daisy chained together onto a common VET control cable

The maximum cable length to any antenna should not exceed 150m. If daisy

chaining antennas together, installers must ensure that the total control cable length

doesn’t exceed 150m (Note: There is not an actual firm cut off point for the length of

the VET cable, and will depend on site specific conditions, however, installers

should note that problems may be encountered if the run exceeds 150m)

Note: Argus antennas, being deployed by O2 from January 2010 for 6 sector

working, don’t have the facility to daisy chain antennas, as they have one AISG port

only. When deploying Argus antennas, the Kathrein AISG splitter box, Part number

860 10002, should be used, as shown below.

Note: The Kathrein junction box must be used in the correct orientation, with

the AISG connectors situated at the bottom, facing downwards.

Tower type installation: The standard configuration would be one master control

cable running from the termination box at the BTS equipment location and up the

tower to the AISG port of the first antenna. The other antennas are then daisy

chained as required. The unused AISG port of the last antenna must be sealed by a

cap or other appropriate method. This is shown in Diagram 1 below. Use of Kathrein

Multiband or Triband antennas will require that a short (typically 500mm) jumper

cable is used to daisy chain the UMTS and GSM motors together.

Roof type installation: For rooftops, it will often be more appropriate to use

individual control cables for all antennas. In this situation, a single cable is run to

each antenna AISG port, and the unused AISG connector sealed by a cap or other

appropriate method, as shown in diagram 2 below.

Junction box: Where appropriate, or when deploying Argus antennas with one

AISG port only, rather than running 3 main VET cables back to the termination box,

a Kathrein 3 way junction box (Available from Kathrein UK, address as previously,)

may be deployed at a suitable location in the VET cable run to connect all 3 VET

cables, and a single cable then run from the junction box to the Termination box, as

shown in diagram 3 below.

In some situations, it will be appropriate to use a mixture of the above methods.

When for example 2 antennas on a roof top are closely spaced, then these antennas

can be daisy chained, and a third antenna which may be somewhat further away, will

have a separate control cable.

Control cables should be clamped along with the main feeder run using appropriately

sized clamps, as defined in D&S6130 and spaced at the same distances as the feeder

clamps. Where the control cable is fixed directly to the feeder cable tray, then the use

of tie wraps is allowed. Care must be taken when fixing the control cable directly to

the feeder tray that any sharp edges which may cut into and damage the cable are

avoided, or suitable protection applied. The cable should as a minimum be fixed

every 1m, however, in some situations (i.e. on corners or bends) closer tying may be

required, and common sense must be used. In all situations, the control cable must be

fixed so that no potential trip hazards are present, and to help avoid this, wherever

possible, should be fixed to the inside of the tray, not the outside.

VET Cable Termination Box A VET cable termination box (pictured below) must be used to terminate the control

cable on all new build sites deploying VET antennas. The box must be deployed in

the nearest location possible to the BTS equipment, and within 3m of a suitable

240v Power supply. VET termination boxes are supplied by both GCA and ICD

(Address as above), and are supplied with a number of mounting options.

VET Motor Serial Numbers Kathrein antennas use a separate VET motor for each individual frequency band. It

is vital that the VET motor and UMTS MHA locations are known, and the

serial numbers are correctly recorded on the ASICC sheet. When configuring

the VET Motors after antenna installation, the motor serial numbers and

locations will be required

VET Motor Connection All Kathrein antennas are delivered as manual VET versions, and the motor must be

obtained separately at the time of order. The detailed installation instructions

provided with the antennas and motors must be followed. With the exception of the

800 10314 antenna with integrated motor – See page 20 for further information, all

Kathrein antennas will require the VET motor to be configured with the correct

antenna data information. To ensure installers have the correct antenna information,

the latest Device Data software file must be used. As of Jan 2010, this is version

2.02. Kathrein VET motors are supplied with a termination connector which must be

fitted to any unused ports

Jaybeam and Powerwave antennas have the VET motors factory installed and

configured, and should not be removed prior to installation. Argus antennas have pre-

configured, integrated VET motors which cannot be removed.

VET Motor Configuration Note: The screen shots 2 to 21 below show an earlier version of the Kathrein

software, however, the procedure is the same as when using V2.1.1 software.

The MHA configuration section shows the correct V2.1.1 software version.

When configuring the antennas the following step – by – step instructions must

be followed.

Note: The following notes show a single Kathrein triband antenna

configuration process, however, all Kathrein antennas, and other non Kathrein

antennas are all generally configured in the same way. Where different

procedures are required, these are given in the Section “Use of Kathrein V2.1.1

Software with non Kathrein antennas” commencing on Page 26

1. Connect up all VET motors (using appropriate daisy chaining where more

than one motor per antenna is required) and the main antenna to VET

termination box cable, using a short VET control cable to connect the

PCA controller to the termination box.

2. Connect the PCA controller to the PC and launch the Kathrein software.

The screen will show “SCANNING” as it is finding the VET motors

3. It is important to check that the expected number of motors are actually

detected and shown. i.e. for a 3 sector site using triband antennas, 9

motors will have been installed and should be displayed, with serial

numbers corresponding to those previously recorded. If the correct

number of motors are not shown, then the missing motors should be

checked for correct connection. It should also be noted that the serial

number will not be shown in any predefined order, but will be

random, even if they have been installed in sequence. The motor

serial number is the only indication of the location of the motor,

which will correspond to the previously recorded motor / antenna

location.

4. Once the Software has read the information from the VET motors, the

“Status” boxes will show “ERROR” as shown below, as no antenna

configuration information will have yet been entered into the motors. With

the exception of the UMTS only antenna, type number 800 10314 (See

page 20 for configuration details of this antenna), the “Antenna Type”

boxes will also be empty, as no antenna type will have yet been entered.

The motor serial numbers shown on the screen will correspond to the

VET motors connected to the relevant antenna ports as shown on the label

on the motor. The motor serial numbers MUST be entered into the

ASICC sheet in the relevant space in the “System Information” page.

5. Once the software has detected all 3 motors, click on the Wizard Setup

tab (Top LHS of screen). Which will take you to a screen as shown below

6. Enter Sector ID, Basestation ID (Site CSR), Installer ID and Antenna

Type as per steps 7 to 11 following.

7. The Sector ID’s must be labelled as follows

GSM 900 nG09

UMTS 900 nU09

GSM 1800 nG18

UMTS 2100 nU21

Where a 900 MHz antenna is transmitting both UMTS 900 and GSM 900,

then the sector shall be identified as follows:-

UMTS 900 + GSM 900 nGU9

Where “n” is the sector number the antenna is connected to.

8. The Basestation ID must be filled in with the O2 6 digit site CSR number

9. The installer ID must be filled in with a code which identifies the

installation rigger and rigging company (Maximum of five digits allowed)

10. The Inst Date will be filled in automatically with the date of the antenna

install assuming the PC is set to the correct date. If this is not the case, the

correct date should be entered

11. The antenna type must be filled in with the correct frequency information

for that motor from the drop down list on the screen. The motors have a

unique serial number, shown on the label on the motor, and will appear on

the screen in the “Serial Number” boxes. The example shown below is

taken from a 1.5m 742 270 Triband antenna. Multiband antennas (2

motors per antenna), and single band antennas (1 motor per antenna) will

be similar. It can be seen from the screen shots below that there are 3

configuration files for this antenna. One for the GSM 1800 band (Shown

as 742 270 1710-1880 MHz) one for the GSM 900 band (shown as 742

270 806-960 MHz), and one for the UMTS band (Shown as 742 270

1920-2170 MHz). It should be noted in the example below that the motors

are ordered 1800, 900, UMTS, however, the motors will not necessarily

be in this sequence, but will be random, and different for each install. The

motor controlling each set of ports must be filled in with the correct

frequency band for that motor. i.e. in the example given, motor serial

number CS62705016 controls the GSM 900 band ports and the 742 270

806-960 MHz information must be selected

12. Once all the data has been entered correctly, click on the “Set Data”

15. Click the “FINISH” button to return to the “Device Status” screen as

shown below. The “Status” window will still show “ERROR” this is

correct, as the motors have not yet been calibrated.

For each of the frequency bands of a particular antenna, select “Details” button for each antenna in turn which will bring

up the page as shown below. The Error Status box will show “NOT CALIBRATED” as indicated below. Click on the

18. In the antenna Serial Number box, enter the Serial number of the antenna,

and click on the “Set” button

Status page. When each motor has been correctly calibrated, there should

be no errors, with the “status” boxes showing “OK”, as indicated below

20. To set the required tilt value, enter the required downtilt, and click the

“Set tilt” button. The Status box will show “MOVING” then “OK” as

indicated below

21. Once sector 1 has been configured, then move on to sector 2 and 3 in turn

and configure using the same process (Assuming a 3 sector site)

22. Once all 3 sectors are configured, check with the software that all motors

can be seen, are configured correctly, and can be adjusted, each antenna

frequency band is set to the tilt angle required by the SSF, and the motor

serial numbers are correctly entered onto the site ASICC form

23. The software configuration procedure is now complete

Report File The Kathrein Software has a feature called “Report File”. This allows the antenna

configuration for all antennas on a site to be stored in a “.txt file”. It is a requirement

of O2 that this Report File is stored and returned to O2 with the ASICC form.

The Report File function should be used as follows:-

1) Click on the “Report File” Button

2) Enter any comments relevant to the site or configuration of the antenna. For all

installations it is an O2 requirement that the SCF Issue number and date is

entered into the Comments section as a minimum. For optimisation the source of

the work required (i.e. e-mail, name of O2 radio planner etc.) must be shown

3) Click the “Save” button

4) Store the Report File by highlighting and overwriting the “*” only (Leave

“.txt”) giving the file the Site CSR number and name

Kathrein 800 10314 UMTS only antenna with integrated VET motor

Software Configuration The Kathrein UMTS only 800 10314 (O2 Quantum code 65XV10UR13K) VET

antennas require a slightly different set up procedure to other Kathrein antennas. Due

to the use of an integrated VET motor, the antenna is pre-configured from the

factory, and does not required the antenna type to be selected from the drop down

box. When configuring this antenna type, the following instructions must be

followed.

1. Connect the PCA controller to the PC and launch the Kathrein software.

The software will initially show “Scanning…..” (see Screen shot below)

2. Once the antenna(s) has been found, the “Status” bar will show

“Scanning” for RCU status as shown in the screen shot below (Note, only

1 antenna is shown in this example).

3. Once the scan has finished, the antenna details will be displayed as

indicated in the screen shot below. As the antenna is already factory

configured, then the antenna type will already be displayed, and the status

should show “OK” Note: if “Error” is shown, see step 15 below. It is

important to check that the expected number of antennas are actually

detected and shown. i.e. for a 3 sector site using 3 antennas, 3 antennas

will be displayed. The serial numbers will correspond to those shown on

the rear of the antenna. If the correct number of antennas are not shown,

then check all connections before proceeding. It should also be noted that

the serial numbers will not be shown in any predefined order, but will be

random The motor / antenna serial numbers (In this example, the antenna

serial number D36801429 is being installed, as indicated in the “Serial

Number” window) MUST be entered into the ASICC sheet in the relevant

space in the “System Information” page

5. Enter Sector ID, Basestation ID (Site CSR), Installer ID, and Antenna

Where “n” is the sector number the antenna is connected to. (Note, For

O2 UK, this antenna is used for UMTS only, therefore only UMTS sector

information is required)

7. The Basestation ID must be filled in with the O2 6 digit site CSR number.

8. The installer ID must be filled in with a 5 digit code indicating the

rigging company and installation rigger

9. The Inst Date will be filled in automatically with the date of the antenna

install assuming the PC is set to the correct date. If this is not the case, the

correct date should be entered

10. Once all the data has been entered correctly, click on the “Set Data”

button.

14. Click on the “Details” button, and the screen will show the status of the

antenna(s) as shown below

be calibrated. To do this, click on the “Calibrate” button, and Status will

show “MOVING” as indicated below, otherwise go to step 17

16. Once all motors have been correctly calibrated, then return to the “Device

Status” screen by clicking on the “Back” button (Bottom LHS of screen).

There should now be no errors showing, with the “Error Status”

windows showing “OK”.

17. To set the required tilt value, enter the required downtilt, and click the

“Set tilt” button. The Status box will show “MOVING” as indicated

below.

Use of Kathrein V2.0 Software with non Kathrein antennas

General Information Kathrein V2.1.1 Software may be used with Jaybeam, PCTel (Sigma) and

Powerwave antennas, albeit with a few limitations. Note: The V2.1.1 software has

solved many of the issues of compatibility with non Kathrein antennas over the

older V2.0 software previously used.

In general, the instructions given above for use with Kathrein antennas is also

relevant for use with other manufacturers antennas.

The following notes give indications of differences that will be encountered and

solutions.

Items Relevant to all Non Kathrein Antennas

Initial Device Scan Problem. When the software is opened, and the initial Device Scan starts, an error

message “No Devices!” may be shown (See Screen shot below) Note: This is usually

shown with Sigma antennas only, however, may also be shown with other non

Kathrein antennas

Solution. Click on “OK”, and click the “Devices Status” tab, which will re-start the

device scan, and find all connected motors. (Note:, if “No Devices!” message shows

again, click on “OK” and repeat the “Devise Status” scan

Items Relevant to all Sigma (PCTel)

Antennas

Sigma AISG V1.0 Antennas Problem . Older Sigma antennas using AISG version 1.0 will not work correctly with

Kathrein V2.1.1 software due to a pin configuration change. These antennas were

supplied until approx end 2004. If the Kathrein V2.1.1 software is being used with

older Sigma antennas and they cannot be seen by the software during a normal scan,

then it is likely that the antenna is an AISG V1.0 antenna.

Solution. A modified VET cable with a reconfigured PIN connection from GCA

must be used. This cable comes with a red coloured jacket, and are marked as “O2

AISG 1.0 to 1.1 Pin reversal cable” (See photo below) These cables have 2 of the

pins reversed, which in effect changes an AISG V1.0 into V1.1 configuration. It is

important that this cable is only used with Sigma V1.0 antennas, as if is used on

standard AISG V1.1 antennas, then they will in effect be turned back into AISG V1.0

antennas which will not be recognised by the Kathrein software. If Sigma V1.0 and

V1.1 antennas are mixed on site, then the VET reversal cable should be permanently

installed at the V1.0 antenna only. If access to the antennas is not possible, then the

AISG antenna should be set with no crossover cable used – at this point only AISG

V1.1 antenna will be seen. The Crossover cable should then be added at the output of

the PCA, and the software re-started, at which time the V1.0 antennas will be seen.

Note: Only early Sigma antennas (Up to approximately end 2004) were deployed as

V1.0. No other manufactures antennas were deployed with V1.0 software. If any of

these antennas are removed from site (i.e. for maintance or upgrade work) then

they MUST NOT be re-installed in the O2 network O2 REB 068 gives further

information on this requirement.

Items Relevant to all Jaybeam Antennas

CMD_TIMEOUT Problem . Jaybeam antennas have been known to occasionally come up with

“CMD_TIMEOUT” errors during tilt setting functions, particularly when going to

the extreme ends of the tilt ranges.

Solution. The Software should be closed down and re-opened, and allow the motors

to be rescanned. Once this has been completed, the Error Status box should show

“OK” , and should show the correct tilt setting. If the correct tilt setting is slightly off

(i.e. reads 9.8 Deg rather than 10.0 Deg), then the user should attempt to move the

antenna to the required value using the normal “Set Tilt” function. If

“CMD_TIMEOUT” occurs again, then the VET motor should be left at the tilt

position (i.e. 9.8 deg) to perform the required System return loss test, the software

restarted to clear the error, and a note to this effect added to the comments box of the

Report File. The normal configuration should then be continued, and the antenna set

to its final required tilt setting.

NOTE. A simple “Device Status” rescan will not correct the “CMD_TIMEOUT”

error. The software MUST be closed down completely and re-opened to solve this

problem

Note: ALL JAYBEAM ANTENNAS ARE SELF CALABRATING AND

DON’T REQUIRE FIELD CALIBRATION.

Items Relevant to all Powerwave Antennas

Configuration File Problem . Powerwave antennas which do not have the configuration file loaded into

the VET motors

Solution. There is no direct solution to this problem, as the Kathrein software is not

capable of loading the configuration files into the Powerwave antennas VET motors.

All Powerwave antennas which are required to be remote tilt versions should be

purchased with the motor already fitted in the factory. This will ensure that the

configuration file will have already been pre-loaded in the factory, and the antenna

can then be configured as normal. If a new clean motor which has not be configured

is used, (i.e. a faulty motor has to be replaced) please contact Dave Westrup (07860

Configuration of NSN WMHD UMTS MHA’s

General From January 11th

2010, O2 will introduce an additional requirement to configure all

NSN supplied AISG UMTS MHA’s (Version WMHD only) to minimise incorrect

sector identification, particularly in respect to 6 sector working. These MHA’s may

be configured with the same Kathrein PCA box and software as for VET antennas,

and broadly follows the same labelling format as for VET antennas and feeders [1]

MHA Configuration Method The MHA may be configured prior to, or after installation, however, as with VET

antennas, it is vitally important that once an MHA has been configured with sector ID

information, then the MHA must be installed on that sector, otherwise when the

MHA is scanned by NSN during integration, then this will result in crossed sectors

which will involve a site visit by the rigging contractor to resolve.

When configuring AISG MHA’s, the following items will be required:-

1. Kathrein Handheld PCA box Note: If using the older PCA, then the 15V power

input must be used, otherwise the PCA is unable to read the MHA.

Additionally, if using the earlier PCA, then the current draw option is not

available.

2. VET Control cable

3. Kathrein Smart Bias T, Part number 782 10253

4. Laptop PC with Kathrein Version 2.1.1 PCA Software, with Device Data file

version 2.02.

MHA Configuration All AISG MHA’s must be configured with the Kathrein Software V2.1.1 and

handheld PCA controller as for VET antennas. The VET control cable will now be

connected to the Smart Bias T as shown below.

When configuring the MHA’s the following step – by – step instructions must

be followed.

1. Connect the AISG lead to the Kathrein Smart Bias T “Port DC RCU”, and

the RF lead to “Port 2 Feeder” as shown below. Note: no connection is

made to “Port 1 Antenna” If the MHA is being configured after

installation, then the Smart Bias T “Port 2 Feeder” is connected to the

BTS end of the main RF feeder. If the main feeder is terminated in a

female connector, then a short Male to Male jumper will be required.

2. Connect the other end of the RF lead to the MHA “BTS 1” port as shown

below.

3. Connect the PCA controller to the PC and launch the Kathrein software.

The screen will show “SCANNING” as it is finding the MHA. Note, if

the Smart Bias T is connected to the wrong MHA port, then an error

message showing “No Devices Found!” will be shown.

4. Once the MHA is detected, the screen as seen below will be shown.

5. Click on the Wizard Setup tab, this will take you to a screen as shown

below.

6. Configure Sector ID-0 and 1, Installer ID and Basestation ID, in the same

format as for configuring VET antennas. Both Sector ID-0 and ID-1 must

be configured with the same information, i.e. 1U21. Follow the same “Set

Data – Write Data – Finish” procedure as for VET antennas. Once

completed, click on the “Details” tab, and the following screen will be

shown. For a correctly working MHA, the Status should show as OK, as

below. If ERRORS are shown, then click the “Reset” and “Clear Errors”

tabs. If the MHA still shows errors, then the MHA should be swapped for

a new MHA. For the WMHD MHA currently deployed by O2 UK, the

“Get Mode” and “Get Gain” tabs are not settable functions. The Serial

number shown will correspond with the serial number shown on the side

of the MHA (as shown in Photo below), and is the number which must be

entered into the ASICC sheet.

7. If required, the MHA current draw test, as required for ASICC

completion, may be determined by transferring the Smart Bias T to the

MHA BTS 2 port, and clicking the “View [V]/[mA]” tab, as shown

below. Once this has been completed, the MHA is configured ready for

use.

Note: This function is currently only available when using the later

Kathrein PCA box, version A01

8. As with VET antennas, an additional report file will need to be generated

and returned with the ASICC
