Client Company Description:

The customer is a big player in North American insurance industry and offers insurance and financial products including fixed and variable annuities, life insurance, individual life reinsurance, and retirement savings plans. It also provides policy brokerage, investment planning, mutual funds, wealth management, and employee benefits administration. The customer administers and manages the life and accident insurance policies underwritten by the affiliates.

Project Description:

a. Windsor-Omni Application is basically a policy and database administration project monitored with Omni application from SunGard in INSURANCE/RETIREMENT SERVICES domain. These policies include 401(K) plans, 403(B) plans, 457 plan etc. where employers buy DEFINED CONTRIBUTION or DEFINED BENEFIT policies for its employees as Retirement Solution.

b. The project mainly focuses on enhancement of the existing Omni system functionalities and creation of new business functionalities based on customer need using Micro Focus Cobol and Omniscript as the main programming languages.

c. The version of Omni used is mainly Omni Plus 5.5 with a relatively smaller part of data kept in Omni Plus 5.05 version as well. The data is maintained patially in Maiframes and in Linux.

d. Another vital agenda of this specific project is the MIGRATION of the total system from legacy MAINFRAME to LINUX platform.

e. I’ve successfully led an UPGRADE and MIGRATION project for one of the data keeping systems of our client from Omni 5.05 Mainframe platform to Omni 5.5 Linux.

f. I’ve worked as a developer in a number of platform migration projects where the data keeping system was migrated from MAINFRAME to LINUX.

g. Currently I’m leading the application development and maintenance (ADM) team which comprises of 7 members.

h. Apart from working as a developer and leading my team, I’m currently working on project estimations (effort and cost).

Roles and responsibilities in the project:

I am involved here as a Team Lead for the Application Development & Maintenance team.

My roles and responsibilities include:

1. Work as a Micro Focus Cobol and Omniscript developer in:a. Enhancementb. Development Release.

2. Prepare elaborate testing plan to conduct thorough unit testing.

Self-Innovation Projects to Effect Major Cost Savings to The Customer:

1. Created a tool single handedly which accepts the input parameters from the user and generates OmniScript to process the request through VBA and provides the results to the user instantly without the intervention of any developer. This accounted for approx $4K/year savings to the customer.

2. Created an automated process to add new funds to the system which previously used to take 7 PD’s of effort every month. By creating this automated tool, I passed a benefit of $20K/year to the customer.

3. Working on creating an impact analysis tool using shell script and Cobol. This tool will take input parameters from the user for impact analysis and will come up with the impact analysis results without the intervention of any developer. Once created, it will save around $25K/year for the customer.
