I.PREPARING YOUR RESUMEYour resume reflects you, your accomplishments, your skills,

your writing ability, your personality and your potential.

    GETTING STARTED THE BASICS

Use simple, clean typefaces in a format that is easy to read. Place your most important achievements on the page to catch the employers eye. Print your resume and cover letter on good quality bond paper. Limit your resume to one page.

If you are a second career law student, or if you intend to pursue a publicinterest or government career, you may use two pages. This will give you theability to list all prior work experience and/or community service positions.

GOAL: Make a Good First Impression

    SELF ASSESSMENT

Before composing your resume, take the time to write down your work, volunteer and educationalexperiences without worrying whether it fits into resume format. The format comes later and is mucheasier once you have completed the self assessment. Be as detailed as possible, as you will select onlythose experiences and achievements that are most impressive and relevant to your job search.

Make a list of the following:

Educational institutions you graduated from or attended Degrees you have received and ones you expect to receive Awards and/or honors you received at each of your educational institutions Organizations you have participated in and leadership/officer positions held

Hobbies, sports, or other activities you have participated in

Foreign languages that you speak fluently or with a very high proficiency Past employment experience, which includes part-time, full-time, paid or non-paid positions,

legal or non-legal positions, internships and externships

Duties and responsibilities at each employment experience (be sure to describe duties andresponsibilities that show such abilities as: communication, inter-personal skills, leadershipskills, dedication, self-motivation, self-confidence, an ability to handle high pressuresituations, research skills and writing skills)

Study abroad or competitive sports experiences Volunteer or community work and how this work has benefited your personal and

    professional growth

Military experience and achievements Referencespeople who are in a position to vouch for your experience and abilities

After preparing this survey you must condense, edit and capsulate the material into a resume.Ultimately, only the most essential data should be included.

    GOAL: Capitalize on your strengths.

II. SUBSTANCE OF YOUR RESUMEEvery statement on your resume must be accurate; that meansabsolutely precise and correct.

Many employers discontinue consideration of any candidate whose resume contains inaccuraciesrelating to class rank, GPA, work experience or any other matter. Remember, this may also subject

you to disciplinary action by the law school and/or affect your admission to a states Bar if informationon your resume is untrue.

Example: If you list your class rank it must be the mathematically correct percentage. After new ranksare issued you must update to your new rank, even if it is not as favorable as your old one.

The format for a resume follows the basic pattern of:

Contact Information Education Experience Skills or Special Qualifications (OPTIONAL) Community Service or Volunteer Service (OPTIONAL) Interests (OPTIONAL)

Material You Should OMIT from Your Resume:

Do not include an Objective statement Unless otherwise requested by the employer,Objective statements are not used within the legal profession. (Do not include Summaryof Qualifications either.)

Do not include salary requirements on your resume, as this should be included in yourcover letter, and then only when requested.

Do not include references or the phrase References available upon request. Do not include LSAT scores. No personal data (age, marital status, social security number). No prospective items that are not confirmed. Do not include a journal unless you have

been invited & accepted the position (same for Moot Court, etc.). Do not list a clinic orexternship if you are on the waiting list. Do not list an internship, volunteer position orother work position unless you have accepted the role.

Do not include Latin graduation honors (e.g,.magna cum laude) until aftergraduation.

    A. CONTACT INFORMATION

The only personal information that you should include on your resume is your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address, which should all appear at the top of your resume. Example: [email protected] will not be viewed as professional by an employer.Should you be from a geographic location outside of Central New York and you wish to return hometo work, you should include your local address because it shows a tie to the area and the potential torelocate.

    Examples:

    JOHN C. STUDENT222 Cherry Street, Apt. #12

    Liverpool, NY 13088(718) [email protected]

    Kate [email protected]

    555-123-6543Current Address: Permanent Address:

    B. EDUCATION

Even if you came to law school with substantial work experience, you should begin the substantiveportion of your resume with the Education section.

You should list the educational institutions you have attended, degree(s) received, honors and

activities. Be sure to include the month and year of anticipated and previous graduation dates.Syracuse University College of Law confers a J.D. or Juris Doctor.

o It is incorrect to use Juris DoctorateInformation regarding scholastic background should be set forth in the following order:

Legal education Graduate education (if any) Undergraduate education

BE CONSISTENT: If you use J.D., use B.A. or B.S. to describe your undergraduatedegree. Accordingly, if you use Juris Doctor then write out yourundergraduate degree, i.e., Bachelor of Arts.

It is not recommended that you include your HIGH SCHOOL information on your resume.

There are three possible exceptions to this:

    1. You are applying for employment in an area, outside of Syracuse or the New Yorkmetro area, where you attended high school;

    2. You received significant awards and honors, AND you do not have much workexperience to include on the resume; or

    3. You attended a competitive high school with a very well-developed network of alumni. You should list the school, its location and your date of graduation; do not include anyother details (aside from exception #2).

Generally, your high school information should still drop off of your resume after 1L year.Example:

Syracuse University College of Law, Syracuse, NY

    Candidate for J.D., May 2014

Babson College, Wellesley, MAM.B.A., May 2011

University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MIB.S., cum laude, Accounting, May 2009

    GPA/Class Rank

You should express your class standing, as a percentage, e.g., top 30%o If you list your class rank as a fraction (e.g., 16/223), you should also compute

that fraction into a percentage: otherwise you are leaving the employer tocomplete the math.

Round up your class rank: If your class rank computes to 13.6% or 13.2%, you are in thetop 14%; neverround down.

As a general rule, if you are in the top 30%of your law school class you should include thatinformation in the first subheading under your law school entry

ACCURACY IS VITALSome employers find competitive standing (top X%) more meaningful as it allows them to comparestudents from different schools on a similar measure. If employers are interested in actual gradesearned, they will usually request a transcript. If you do not put your rank on your resume, and youhave a 3.0 or above, you should put your GPA on your resume; most employers will assume you havebelow a 3.0 if you do not put a rank or GPA on your resume.

If you decide to put your GPA on your resume it must match your current transcriptto the nearest hundredth. (You must list yourcumulative GPA to reflect all coursestaken in law school.)

    Example: 3.142 = 3.143.146 = 3.143.396 = 3.39

Note: Although grades are an important criterion to some employers, students in the middle tolower half of their class should not obsess over them.

Students can improve their class standing over time or they can augment their academic informationwith law school journals, trial teams and employment experience. For instance, participation in thelaw schools externship program is helpful if you have a limited legal employment background.Furthermore, if you have excelled in a specialized area of legal study and have targeted your job hunttowards that particular market, it might be effective to indicate grades or class standing in relevantcourses in your resume or cover letter.

If your rank or GPA in your undergraduate school or other graduate institutions washigh, list it under the appropriate schools.

    Honors

For any school where you have received honors, set forth a separate subheading entitled Honorsunder the school from which you received them. List each honor separately in order of importance, not alphabetically or chronologically.

For any honor that is not explanatory, include a brief parenthetical description.

Example: Pi Sigman Alpha (Political Science Honor Society)

Include among your undergraduate and graduate honors:

Deans List Honor Societies Scholarships or awards based on academic achievements

Among the law school honors you may list once you have accepted an invitation or been notified

    of such:

Journals: Syracuse Law Review, Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce, TheDigest(Journal of the National Italian-American Bar Association), Syracuse Science &Technology Law ReporterandImpunity Watch

Moot Court Honor Society and trial teams Deans List Scholarships or other awards based on academic achievement

    Activities

Your activities at any of your schools should be set forth as a separate subheading entitled Activitiesunder the school where you participated in such activities.

As with honors, list each activity separately in order of importance, not alphabetically orchronologically. If any activities are not self explanatory include a brief, parenthetical description i.e., SPIN should include that it is the Syracuse Public Interest Network in parentheses.

When listing activities, include the positions or titles held in a particular organization. You mayinclude clubs, law fraternities and student memberships in bar associations. Publications

Publications can either be cited as a separate subsection under your Education section or it can be aseparate heading all together at the end of your resume.

You should cite to any of your writings that have been published using Bluebook form (the accepted

    format in the legal profession).

Any writing which is scheduled to be published should be indicated by at least the titleand name of the journal.

If you have the information, indicate the volume and page of the publication and thedate, e.g., to be published [date] or forthcoming [date].

    C. EXPERIENCE

This portion of the resume is devoted to your work experience. It is not necessary to create thedistinction between Legal Experience and Other Work Experience or Other ProfessionalExperience. You should keep them together simply under Experience.

List your employment in reverse chronological order, i.e., the most recent first, settingforth the employers full name, the city and state where the employer is located, the titleof your position and dates of employment.

o For dates of employment, either use the season (Fall 2011) or months and year(Aug. 2011 May 2012).

Since job titles provide no detail regarding what your job entailed, you will need todescribe your tasks.

    Describing Your Responsibilities & Contributions

Your descriptions should emphasize your responsibilities and contributions, rather than your routineduties. Most importantly, focus on those tasks that use skills relevant to the practice of law.

Focus on skills such as research and writing, negotiating, analyzing data, decision-making,communicating and supervising

Action verbs, such as directed, managed, and negotiated, create the image of anachiever

Use past tense verbs for former jobs and present tense verbs for current jobsNever use I, my or any other form of first person in describing your tasks Use active phrases, e.g., negotiated real estate contracts Avoid phrases such as Duties and responsibilities included

When describing your experience, write with the potential employer in mind. Highlight projects youhave worked on that are most relevant to the work you seek. Be sure you give some specific details, sothat the employers can see more fully the breadth of your experience. Do not be too generalgivethem an idea of the substance of that work.

However, you need not provide a long discussion of legal issues in your resumedescriptions.

SeeAppendix B for a list of buzz words that can assist you with drafting your jobdescriptions.

  • 7/27/2019 Resume Guide 2011-2012 (1)

    11/35

10 Office of Professional & Career Development

With respect to non-legal employment, you should exercise discretion in listing past jobs.

It is not necessary to set forth every part-time or summer job ever held.o But you should list those that helped you develop management, client relations

    or other skills.

See Appendix A for additional examples.

    Example: Experience Section

NEW YORK STATE ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE New York, NYLegal Intern, Consumer Frauds Bureau Summer 2012Conducted legal research and writing. Drafted a pamphlet on the legal rights of consumers. Assisted inpreparing for mediations of consumer complaints in matters involving the New York Lemon Law,landlord/tenant disputes, unfair trade practices and other consumer matters.

    Military Service

Military service can be a separate section after your Experience section. Or, military service may beindicated in the Experience section. Regardless, be sure to include any noteworthy service and anycitations or commendations. If you are presently in an active reserve unit, you should indicate thatinformation as well.

If you attended Officer Training School, it might be more appropriate to list thisinformation under the Education section.

    D. SKILLS OR SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Some employers find it important to learn that you are fluent in a second language or have specific, unique computer expertise. These items should be included under the heading Skills, SpecialQualifications, or Foreign Languages.

With respect to language skills, you should only include these when you are fluent, orhighly proficient in the language.

Computer skills should only be listed if they relate to litigation management software orhighly technical programs. Do not include your proficiency with Word, WordPerfect,Lexis and Westlaw, etc. because familiarity with these programs is assumed.

  • 7/27/2019 Resume Guide 2011-2012 (1)

    12/35

Office of Professional & Career Development 11

    E. COMMUNITY SERVICE OR VOLUNTEER SERVICE

If you are, or were, involved with any community organizations, you may include them under asubheading entitled Community Service. Other types of volunteer work that are not community-based, may be listed under a heading entitled Volunteer Service. Those considering careers in thepublic interest sector should be especially mindful to include such a section. Caution should be

exercised in dealing with controversial affiliations: differences of opinion, unless fundamental, can beresolved after you are hired.

Highlighting your commitment to community service or volunteer work is often veryimportant to public interest and government employers.

    F. PUBLICATIONS

As mentioned above under Education, publications may instead be listed in its own sectionappearing before Interests. Publications must always be listed in Bluebook format.

    G. INTERESTS

The extracurricular activities in which you participated in law school and college, as well as past non-legal employment, will usually suggest what your outside interests are, e.g., drama, tennis, politicalorganizations. There may, however, be times when the education and employment sections of theresume do not seem an appropriate place to mention some important aspect of your background. Youmay then add a section labeled Interests.

Try to be specific in describing your hobbies and interests; entries such as readingandcooking are too general. Something like West Indian literature and French cooking

    would be more appropriate.

Remember that the purpose of these entries is to make a connection with interviewers and spark livelyconversation in your interviews. However, you should realize that any interest that you list is fairgame and an interviewer may very well ask you pointed questions about what you have listed.

Example: If you list reading Hemingway as an interest, you must be ready to discuss his works.

    H. REFERENCES

Employers often want independent verification of a job applicants abilities.

It is not recommended that you state References will be furnished upon request at thebottom of your resume.

If an employer wants references, the employer will ask for them.o You should know in advance who would serve as your references in the event a

prospective employer requests you to furnish that information.

o When a prospective employer asks for references, be ready to furnish the names, addresses (mailing and e-mail) and telephone numbers of your references.

Before starting your interviews, make sure that the individuals you intend to use asreferences are willing to serve as such.

o You never want references you list to be unaware that you will be relying onthem, and you never want to use anyone as a reference who is only willing togive faint praise.

Your references should include a law professor who is familiar with your work. Other referencesshould be from employers listed in the employment section, or in some cases, a professor from yourundergraduate studies who may be familiar with your work. Your references should be people whopersonally know you and your work. You should NOT use the person with the most senior title if theyare only an acquaintance and have only heard about your work from others. In most instances, youmay also use a reference that no longer works for your previous employer. Simply include the updatedcontact information for your reference.

Relatives, doctors or clergy whom you have not worked for are not appropriate references. If asignificant amount of your work experience was gained at a family business, make an appointment tospeak with a Professional Development counselor about how to list your references. Three referencesshould be sufficient, in most situations, and can be listed on a separate sheet using the same stationeryand masthead used for your resume and cover letter.

For a sample References page, seeAppendix C.

III. THE PROFESSIONAL LOOK OF YOUR RESUME

You should use an outline approach, listing your education and experience under the appropriate topicheadings as described above. Brevity and simplicity are essential since employers are too busy towade through an ocean of text. On the other hand, do not be so brief that you do not give the employerenough information.

The key, as with most things in life, is to strike a balance.

You can be your own best critic: look at your resume and ask yourself what impression your resumewould make on you if you were the employer. You should do this to determine not only whether yourtext is clear and concise, but also whether the overall appearance of your resume will make a goodimpression. Keep in mind the effective use of white space, headings, spacing, indenting, italics, underlining, capitalized and bold lettering. Remember, your resume is a professional document.

The basics of resume formatting are:

8 1/2 x 11 paper of good quality, 20-25 lb., which is at least 25%cotton White, off-white or cream colored paper (forget the grays & pastel blues) Black ink Use a block-style font such as Times New Roman or Arial

12 or 14 point font for your name 11 or 12 point font for the remainder of the text Avoid going smaller than a 10 point font

Neveruse the Courier font For a resume that is more than one page: it must be stapled and your name and the page

number must appear in the top left- hand corner of each extra page

Left and right/top and bottom margins should be of equal size (0.5 inch -1 inch) Use a laser printer to print or have it prepared by a professional printing firm or copying

    service

  • 7/27/2019 Resume Guide 2011-2012 (1)

    16/35

Office of Professional & Career Development 15

    Consistency

Consistency in format is essential. Once you choose to format a section of your resume in aparticular way, you must format all other sections similarly.

Example: Consistency issues to look for include:

If you use bold lettering for Syracuse University College of Law, you must use boldlettering for all other schools and the names of your employers.

If you indent the headings Honors and Activities under Syracuse UniversityCollege of Law, you must indent those headings the same way under all other schools.

When abbreviating state names you should use the post office designations, i.e., twocapital letters with no periods.

Try to spell out names and months, but if you abbreviate months, be sure to abbreviateall other long months in a similar manner.

Avoid numerical entries for dates, such as 06/08.

    Accuracy

ACCURACY IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE. Not only must the data be accurate, but theresume must also be free of typographical, grammatical and spelling errors.

    GOAL: NO TYPOS!

Remember, attention to detail is an important element of an attorneys craft. Although no one isperfect and everyone makes mistakes, it is inexcusable to have an error on your own resume. Ifemployers detect an error in a resume a highly personalized document, which you have unlimitedtime to prepare they may conclude that you will be equally sloppy and careless about impersonal

work prepared under time pressure. Accordingly, you are urged to review your resume with thegreatest care. It is your responsibility to proofread your resume.

Give your resume to at least one friend or family member to checkfor typos or other errors.

IV. TIPS FOR COMMON FORMATTING PROBLEMS1

YOUR RESUME DOESNT FILL ONE PAGE

Content Solutions: Consider moving some items from the activities section of your education block to your

experience block. This solution works if you have had a responsibility for a project or aset of tasks within an organization. Describe the activity and your role as you would apaying job or a volunteer position. Talk to a Professional Development counselor forassistance.

Include a Community Service/Volunteer section or include volunteer activities in theExperience section. You need not limit the experience section to paid positions.

Tip: Review your application for admission to law school for some ideasFormat Solutions:

Put contact information into a block format Use a larger, but not too large, (14 point max) font for your headings Add a line of space after each heading Use bold headings; bold typeface takes more space Use bullets instead of block text

YOUR RESUME IS OVER ONE PAGE

    Content Solutions:

Consider whether all honors and activities need to be included, especially those fromyour undergraduate education

Consolidate similar activities Omit less recent/relevant experiences (look out for gaps) Review descriptions for conciseness

    Format Solutions:

List contact information horizontally on one or two lines instead of in a block format Reset margins to three-quarters or one-half inch Reduce spacing between entries to 8 point Omit extra spacing after headings List items in a string instead of as a list

o e.g., Activities: Mentor; Corporate Law Society

    V. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    1. I am a joint degree student. How do I reflect this on my resume?Your legal education should appear first, followed by a separate entry for your graduate school. We highly recommend separate entries, especially if you have law school honors and activities. If

you combine the degrees it will be confusing to see law school activities appearing under yourentry for graduate school.

    Example:

    EDUCATION

Syracuse University College of Law: Syracuse, NYCandidate for J.D., May 2012GPA: 3.1Honors: Syracuse Law Review, Executive Editor

Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs: Syracuse, NYCandidate for M.P.A., May 2012

Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania:Bloomsburg, PAB.A. in English, cum laude, May 2009GPA: 3.50Honors: Deans List; Sigma Tau Delta English Honor SocietyActivities: Pre Law Society; Theta Tau Omega Social/ Service Sorority

    2. I have secured a position for the upcoming school year, but have not yet started. Can I update my resume now?

Yes. You can add positions such as externships and research assistantships to your resume prior tostarting the position. Your job description should be brief and start with Will ______. The entryshould appear first under your Experience section.

    Example:

    EXPERIENCE:

    3. Does my resume have to be all on one page?Unless you are a true second career student with specific experience, your resume must be all onone page. There are some exceptions: applying for fellowships, certain government & publicinterest positions as well as intellectual property positions for someone who has conductedscientific research.

Typically, it is best to have more than one version of your resume, tailoring the information youinclude to a specific type of employer. Your resume to a government employer may look differentthan your resume for a law firm as it might highlight your volunteerism or research in a certainclass.

If you are having trouble fitting everything onto one page, try one of the following:

Change your margins. Your margins can be as little as .5 inch all the way around. Just besure that your left margin matches the right and the top margin matches the bottom.

Change your font/font size. Be sure to only use Times New Roman, Arial or similar fonts.Your font size should be no smaller than 10 point.

Be sure to delete anything that references something you did in high school. Check sample resumes for various examples to see which format maximizes your space.

    4. How do I show that I held 2 different positions within the same employer?List the employer once and put all positions held under that heading with the appropriate dates. The positions should be listed in reverse chronological order, most recent first.

    Example:

Grove Manor Waterbury, CTRecreational therapist October 2010 July 2011Assisted disabled nursing home residents by adapting their past leisure activities to their currentdisabilities. Formed group which focused on special needs of male residents. Tracked patient progressin medical charts and federal paperwork.

Recreation Aid February 2009 October 2010Provided assistance to Recreational Therapists as requested. Transported residents to activities. Set uprecreational activities and assisted with activities.

    5. My article was chosen as an alternate for publication in a journal or LawReview, can I put this on my resume as a Publication or Honor?

No, this information should not be included on your resume. However, if you think it should be onyour resume because the topic of your article may be of interest to an employer, set-up a meetingwith a Professional Development counselor to discuss.

    6. I met with a Professional Development counselor about my resume. Do I haveto upload my resume to Symplicity?

After meeting with a counselor, you should upload your resume onto the Symplicity system, especially if you plan on applying to positions that require you to apply via Symplicity. Note thatall resumes uploaded to Symplicity must be approved even if you have already met with a

Professional Development counselor which can take between 3-5 business days. Andremember: proofread your final version.

    7. I just uploaded my resume to Symplicity, but I dont see it on the system?Check the Pending Documents tab: Once you have uploaded a resume to Symplicity, it goes tothe Pending Documents tab until it is reviewed by a Professional Development counselor. Allresumes uploaded to Symplicity must be reviewed and approved by a counselor before you can useit to apply to job postings. Office policy is to review resumes within 5 business days of posting.

    8. What are some common formatting issues that I should look out for whenreviewing my resume?

Consistency is the biggest formatting issue with respect to resumes. Always print your resumebecause it makes it easier for you to revise and proofread.

If you abbreviate a state in your job description, then the states in your contact informationand education section should also be abbreviated.

Microsoft Word often auto-formats hyphens making them different sizes ( vs. -). Be sureto look out for this.

If you abbreviate a longer month like January in one place, abbreviate the other longermonths. Do not abbreviate months such as May, June or July. Make sure your resume is balanced on the page (i.e., the same amount of blank white space

at the top and bottom of your resume).

    9. I am still currently working for an employer. How do I reflect this in myresume?

For dates of employment, your end date is Present. Current employment should be the first entryappearing under the Experience section. Be sure that verbs for current employment are in the

present tense, even if you are referring to skills you used in the past.

    Example:

United States Department of Justice Binghamton, NY

Extern, United States Attorneys Office, N.D.N.Y. Aug. 2011 Present

Research and draft legal motions and memoranda. Assist attorneys in the Criminal Division in trialpreparation and settlement negotiations. Observe civil and criminal court proceedings.

    OTHER DOCUMENTS TO PREPARE

    Writing Samples

Writing samples must consist only of your own writing.Writing samples should not be heavily edited works and should not be from a group project.

You should have a writing sample prepared and bring it to every interview. There are a fewimportant things to remember about writing samples.

If your writing sample was prepared in conjunction with a course, make sure thatit is reprinted so that the instructors written comments are not included in thecopy submitted to employers. You can also change the font style Yourprofessor may require one style, but for employment purposes, if you upload

your writing sample to Symplicity, using a font style other than Times New

Roman or Arial will cause formatting issues.

If you are using a writing sample developed during employment, you must firstobtain your employers permission to do so. Be sure that the names of theparties, along with any other identifying information are removed or

    changed, whichever is appropriate.

Employers appreciate (and often specify) writing samples that are brief.

GOAL: Five to seven pages is ideal. Ten to twelve pages should be the upper limit.

If you are offering only a portion of a document, or if the documents context is not clear, youshould begin with a brief introduction (formatted consistently with your resume, cover letter andreference list). You can include the following information (where applicable):

Whether the sample was submitted for class or during the course of your employment; That you received permission from your previous employer to use the writing sample; and That due to the length of the original writing sample, you have omitted certain sections (you

can outline the sections that you omitted).

    Examples:

This is an excerpt from an appellate brief written for a legal communications course; severalissues have been omitted in the interest of shortening the sample.

The following writing sample is being used with permission of the supervising attorney.

    Writing SampleFall 2011

This is an excerpt from an Appellate Brief concerning a fictional restrictive

    covenant written for my Legal Communications and Research II class;

several issues have been omitted in the interest of brevity.

    PRELIMINARY STATEMENT

On February 4th, 2010, the plaintiff-appellant Adam Bronson brought suit against Jackson

Michael for the breach of a restrictive covenant and refusal to pay the liquidated damages specified in

an employment contract. Both parties moved for summary judgment. Bronson now appeals the

Decision, Order and Judgment of the Supreme Court, County of Tyler (the Order) granting the

defendants cross motions for summary judgment and declining to enforce either the restrictive

covenant or the liquidated damages provision. This brief is submitted on the behalf of Jackson

Michael, who now asks that the decision of the Supreme Court be affirmed.

    QUESTIONS PRESENTED

    1. Did the lower court properly determine that a restrictive covenant is unenforceable as a matter

of law when a professional who hires an associate and experiences a large increase in his business

prohibits his former associate from working for a period of five years at his expensive, newly-

constructed home office within thirty miles of the employers office to support his wife and disabled

son in an area where there is a need for more professionals?

    2. Did the lower court properly hold that a liquidated damages clause is unenforceable as a matter

of law when a professional attempts to collect $175,000 in damages after hiring an employee, who

helped to double his business, and then experiences only a 10% drop in his newly-enlarged revenue

when that employee leaves in violation of a restrictive covenant?

    Transcripts

Whether or not you offer to provide a transcript, many interviewers will inquire about your grades. You should always have a transcript available for the interviewer. It need not be an official one unlessspecifically requested. You should also always have a copy of your undergraduate/graduate transcripts sincesome employers require them and they can sometimes take a long time to obtain.

Transcripts are available free of charge through the University Registrar located at Steele Hall, First Floor. (Ifyou go out of the law school with Hendricks Chapel directly in front of you, it is the Gray Stone buildingimmediately to the right of the Chapel.)

    Transcripts and Symplicity CSM

Syracuse University College of Laws online system for job and event postings, Symplicity CSM, cannotsupport a scanned version of your official transcript. Most employers e-mail systems also cannot accept theselarge documents. Therefore, you will need to create a Grade Sheet. This is a Word document that can befound in the Document Library of Symplicity. You will have to download the document and manually typein your classes and grades (using the information on your official transcript). Then you must upload the

document to Symplicity CSM and designate it as an Unofficial Transcript.
