Page 2: Restoring the Meaning of Education

It's not about how much homework you have to do, it's about whether or not it's an outstanding assignment.

Page 3: Restoring the Meaning of Education

Teachers need to give students assignments that will impact them, make them think outside of the box, and prepare them for the future.

Page 4: Restoring the Meaning of Education

Teachers need to give less busy work and start giving work that students will have to do when they leave school.

Page 5: Restoring the Meaning of Education

Students should have more group projects because in the real world they will have to work with other people.

Page 6: Restoring the Meaning of Education

They’ll learn how to negotiate, how to treat others, and hear other perspectives.

Page 7: Restoring the Meaning of Education

Homework should incorporate the vocabulary terms, concepts, and formulas from class.

Page 8: Restoring the Meaning of Education

Homework should integrate technology and use websites like Moodle.

Page 9: Restoring the Meaning of Education

Moodle allows students to have discussions, upload projects, and get feedback on their work.

Students can make videos. If they can teach a topic, then they definitely know the material.

Students will have to do research and cite their sources.

They’ll also be proud of themselves.

According to a 2004 national survey of 2,900 American children conducted by the University of Michigan, the amount of time spent on homework is up 51% since 1981.

Page 14: Restoring the Meaning of Education

An academic study found that whereas students ages 6 to 8 did an average of 52 min. of homework a week in 1981, they were toiling 128 min. weekly by 1997.

An admittedly less scientific poll of parents conducted this year for AOL and the Associated Press found that elementary school students were averaging 78 min. a night.

Studies found that kids who do some homework in middle and high school score somewhat better on standardized tests.

But doing more than 60 to 90 min. a night in middle school and more than 2 hr. in high school is associated with, gulp, lower scores.

Give students a homework log to see how many assignments they have missed. They will also know how well they’re doing in the class.
