The highlight of the past months has to be the annual “Restore and Ride” Rally.

But rather than bang on about the success of the rally, I have taken the liberty

of using magazine space to publish a letter from John Carson from Northern

Rivers Classic Motorcycle Club. I reckon that John and the Rob Popplewell, the

convenor sum it up best.

It is always appropriate however to mention our sponsors. As always they supported our rally with wonderful prizes. So it would be great, if members could thank them and draw attention to seeing their names in the magazine when visiting their stores. It is also worth mentioning that you are a member as some of the businesses offer club members a discount! In the past months, there has been a fair bit of feed-back on the Ride Calendar and hopefully it now has something for everyone. There are of course more rallies left in the year, more swap meets, more overnight rides and some new venues for Tuesday morning teas and rides, as well as the return of some old favourites. So keep the suggestions coming, so the rides cover everyone’s idea of the perfect ride and if you want more information on any rides, don’t hesitate to contact the Club Captain or Vice Captains. With regard to communication, Mick Carpenter has started the club’s own Facebook page and it is going great guns with photos, videos and comments and is attracting a large number of “hits”. As was mentioned in the last editorial, the club has limited records of members’ mobile telephone numbers. So if you wish the club’s records to be updated so you can receive these SMS messages and have the magazine emailed to you, then you will need to send your mobile number and email address to [email protected]

The Annual Coffs Harbour Rally. (26th -28th May, 2017)

The letter below is a from John Carson, a Northern Rivers rider who came to our rally “Dear Members of CH&DMR, THANK YOU, I thought last year’s rally was great but it keeps getting better. The rides are interesting, covering just about all types of roads except snow, although we did get a little sleet last year near Dorrigo. And we were rained on coming down from Ulong. A fair array of motorcycles and the fantastic people who ride them. I’m still on a high after Ken Hoad giving me a ride on his Indian. That’s something I have always wanted to do and now, well maybe an Indian 4 could beat that but wow! The food was very good wherever we partook, especially at the club. The amount of prizes and you just gave them away. About the only thing more you could have done, was polish our bikes for us. Thank you very, very much and see you next year, John Carson”

John’s bike with his swag and steam mop wrapped inside at Ulong, ready for his return to Kyogle.

Rob’s Restore and Ride Rally Report 2017 The thing we wanted most for this rally was good weather and we couldn’t have had a better start. Friday’s riders headed out in brilliant sunshine. Up the Waterfall way to Bellingen and across Lavender Bridge towards the Promised Land. But didn’t quite get there for at Gleniffer they were sent left via Summerville then Gordonville Roads on the north bank of the Bellinger River. This section included 3.5kms of unsealed road. There was an option to avoid this, but all were brave and tackled it. It proved to be better than much of the tarred section! Once on Waterfall Way again it was east to Bellingen for afternoon tea at the Butter Factory café. Ned and Errol casting an experienced pair of eyes over the Friday gathering at the Butter Factory after surviving a lap out via the dirt on Sommervilles Road.

Saturday’s ride also set out in great weather. We now have the luxury of the old Pacific Highway being near devoid of traffic from Bonville to Nambucca, where the route took riders west to Bowraville. The Nambucca Phoenix Association provided an excellent morning tea at Bowraville Central School. From Bowraville, it was along the south bank of the Nambucca River to the outskirts of Macksville where we headed out along the road to Taylor’s Arm for lunch at the “Pub with no Beer”. The pub does have beer these days and good food, although late-comers had quite a wait for the latter. Bikes lined up on the terraces in front of the pub for judging.

Col McAndrew’s winning Triumph from the 1950’s class. A worthy winner amongst a very strong class.

Graham Hodgson on the best 1940’s bike and winner of the “Bike of the Rally” trophy. It was great to see him and other Queenslanders make the trip down as in years gone by.

A cloudy morning on Sunday didn’t deter many for there were almost as many starters as on Saturday’s ride. The winding road to Ulong is a local favorite, especially now the rough bends have been smoothed out. The back-up trailer got its only customer of the weekend here when Neil Parker’s bike had clutch trouble. Patchy rain was encountered on the return, so some got wet and some didn’t. All in all it was a very successful rally. Part of the Sunday ride at the Ulong

Café before returning to Sawtell

Caravan Park for a farewell BBQ.

I’d like to thank the rally committee for their work leading up to and at the rally, also the marshals, back-up drivers, cooks and others who helped to make it a great rally weekend.

Rob Popplewell, the convener, addressing the dinner at Sawtell Bowling Club on

Saturday night.

Out and About

Overnighter to Tenterfield with Rappville Pub on the Return.

“And gentlemen in England now a-bed Shall think themselves accursed they were not here” Henry the Fifth, Act 4 Scene 3

From pouring rain to bright sunny mornings and days. It was a wet ride to Tenterfield, but with quality roads and vistas of misty valleys and mountains, far from unpleasant. The turn-pike tanks meant that there was only one stop at Jackadgery for refreshments, so the riding was pure uninterrupted joy. The return trip down through Drake and Casino was in Winter-crisp sunshine, and Rappville pub provided a big welcome with sumptuous food and beverages to the three Tenterfield returnees and the six adventurous Coffs riders who broke free of the Shire. Wayne could not work out how he got ahead of the

pack! A new venue for most riders and well worth another visit. The ride back down through Pringles Way and Lawrence along the river was most scenic and fine weather all the way home.

Concours d'Elégance

“Often the competitiveness of a Concours d'Elégance forces restoration of a

vehicle to surpass "mint" condition. Mint condition would be the state of the

vehicle when it originally left the factory. Concours-quality cars are often given

upholstery, paint, plating, and mechanical restoration to a standard far

exceeding that of the car when it was new.” Ex Wikipedia.

One of our annual events is the Concours which gives members a chance to bring out their bikes, and in past years it has been well patronised. By combining with the Timber Festival, there should be not only a good audience of our members but the general public as well. The details are “Glenreagh Timber Festival. Static Display at the Festival starting at 8.00am. If later than 8.00am, meet at 9.00am at Caltex and ride up and explain to the gate that you are part of the display. This will be the annual Concours d'Elégance for the club and judging will be at 11.00am followed by lunch at the Golden Dog with a Treasurer’s lunch subsidy of $10 for all entrants!” Remember, it doesn’t have to be a flash bike, just a club registered bike, so bring what you have, and enjoy the day. There are no sheep station prizes!

Membership Renewal

If you have not paid your membership, then your bikes are not registered!!! The club gives you 2 months grace to renew, but the RMS does not. This means you cannot ride a conditionally registered bike after the 30th June unless you have paid your 2017/2018 membership subscription. As far as the RMS is concerned, if the owner of the vehicle is not financial with his or her club, then the bike is no longer attached to a club and is unregistered, irrespective of when the bike’s registration runs out! The current fees are $40 a member (as per the decision of the AGM) or $45 for a couple. The fees can be paid in cash to the Treasurer, by cheque in the mail to the PO box or by direct credit to the Club’s account but make sure you put your name on the Payee section. The account details are: C.H. & D.M.R. Club Inc. BSB: 533-000 Account Number: 36013 S-11 Make sure that you put your name in the Payee advice

Support for Men’s Sheds After a great showing of hospitality on our last visit, the Stuarts Point Men’s shed is going to welcome CHMRC members and all motorcycle riders in the region to take part in a motorcycle show on Saturday, 2nd September. Details of the proposal are attached at the end of the magazine. To support this event, a number of us are going to book some cabins at the Stuarts Point Caravan Park for the Friday night and go down on Friday during the day or after work. Book your own cabins or campsites., but don’t forget to mention you are from the Coffs Motorcycle Restorers. We will then have an informal cook-up and dinner. On the Saturday morning, it is planned to ride over to the Rusty Iron Rally at Macksville showground and return in time for the bike show, afterwards retiring to our cabins for Saturday night. On Sunday, those with Fathers’ Day commitments can dash home early, while others can have a leisurely return via Scotts Head. For details and more information, contact Nick Hiller and let him know of numbers for the Friday night cook-up.
