• Occurs:

– At start of each half or each period of overtime

– After a goal has been scored

• Referee

– Position: Just outside center circle on left side and behind ball

– Signal: Blow whistle once

Kick-Off Requirements

• All players must be in their own half of the field

• Opponents of the kicking team must be 10 yards from the ball until it is put in play (outside the center circle)

• Ball must be stationary on the half line

• Ball must be kicked forward (at least slightly) by kicker

• Ball is in play as soon as it is kicked and moves forward

• Ball cannot be played again by kicker until it has touched another player

– Yes, but very unlikely for any age group

• Can players be offside?

– No, since all players must be in their own half of field

• What can go wrong?

– If ball does not go forward into opponent’s half, then retake

– If kicker plays ball again before it touches another player, then award indirect free kick to opponents

• Occurs:

– When the whole ball crosses the entire touch line, either on the ground or in the air

– Usually best judged by the Assistant Referee

• Referee

– Position: About 20 yards toward the center of the field from where the throw-in will be taken, keeping expected position of ball between yourself and the nearest Assistant Referee

– Signal: Raise arm at 45o angle to point in direction of throw

Throw-In Requirements

• Thrower faces the field with part of each foot on the touch line or on the ground outside the touch line

• Thrower (1) holds ball with both hands, (2) delivers ball from behind and over his head, and (3) releases ball from where it left the field of play

• Opponents must stand at least 2 yards from where the throw-in is taken

• Ball is in play as soon as it enters the field of play

• Ball cannot be played again by thrower until it has touched another player

– No, it must touch another player first

• Can players be offside?

– No, but only for the first player to touch the ball after the throw

• What can go wrong?

– If ball does not enter the field of play or touches the ground first, then retake

– If the thrower plays the ball again before it touches another player, then award an indirect free kick to the opponents

• What can go wrong (continued)?

– If an opponent unfairly distracts or impedes the thrower, then Caution the opponent for Unsporting Behavior

– If the thrower does not deliver the ball from where it left the field, then award a throw-in to the opponents

– If a goalkeeper touches the ball with his hands inside his penalty area after receiving it directly from a throw-in taken by a teammate, then award an indirect free kick to the opponents

• Corner flag must not be moved

• Occurs:

– When referee stops play temporarily for any reason not mentioned in the Laws of the Game

– Typically occurs when a player is injured while the ball is in play

• Referee

– Position: Drop ball where it was located when whistle was blown to stop play

– Signal: No signal necessary

Dropped Ball Requirements

• Referee typically allows one player from each team to participate

• Fair Play practice: If the ball was held by a goalkeeper when play was stopped, then the referee may drop the ball to that goalkeeper

• Ball is in play as soon as it touches the ground
