Calming the Storm Mark 4:35–41 (ESV) Jesus Calms a Storm 35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” The problem isn’t YOU being in the STORM... The problem is THE STORM being in YOU! Two types of storms... Two different responses: 1. STORMS YOU CREATE (POOR CHOICES, SIN, ETC.) Right Response: REPENT 2. STORMS JESUS LEADS YOU TO Right Response: FAITH 1:10 HOMEWORK Do you think that the disciples really understood who Jesus was? From both their actions and words, what leads you to this conclusion? Matthew and Luke also recount this event. Read Matthew 8:23-27 and Luke 8:22-25. What are some of the differences in their accounts? Why do you think they’re slightly different? Read Psalm 107:23-32. What parallels do you see here with Mark 4:35-41? Read Jonah 1:1-17. What parallels do you see here with Mark 4:35-41? What are some of the differences? What challenge or hardship is in your life right now that is causing you to question God’s care and compassion for you? Is it a storm you brought on? Or one God brought you to? How should you respond? How has your faith grown as a result of difficult circumstances? How might your present experiences lead to the further growth of your faith?
