We Suck at collaboration Ron Mader - planeta.com
Which is how we developeda tourism industry...
• Lack of foresight & planning• Insensitive development• Marginalisation, alienation• Massive carbon footprint
Which is characterised by...
...Fail!
People traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes UN World Tourism Organisation
Tourists
• Holidaymakers• Businesspeople• Conferences
• Events (Sport, religion, culture)
• US$ 919 billion in export earnings in 2010
• International tourist arrivals grew by more than 4% to 980 million in 2011
When the world hurts,
tourism hurts• Tourism grew by 7% in 2007• Then grew by 5% in the first half of 2008• Then slumped in the second half of 2008 • And the year ended on only 2% growth• 2009 (remember the H1N1 flu virus?) = a decline of
4.2% to 880 million international tourists arrivals – and a 5.7% decline in international tourism receipts
UNWTO: international tourist arrivals will increase 3% - 4% in 2012...
But it’s climbing back...
... To... More... Than... One... Billion!...
This is gonna kill us!

Integrated tourism, economic, and spatial planning is the key to unlocking the potential
of tourism in destinations
Responsible tourism means successful social development
To transition from business as usual is a matter of will. With the right vision,
planning and collaboration around ideas that provide genuine win-win-win outcomes,
we all benefit. – Tom Walter
