Forest Management certification
Certification is
a way of
ensuring that
your careful
and long term
forest
management is
recognised.
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
FSC Certification was developed for all end-uses of wood and
therefore was not tailored for construction.

Supporting the Concrete Industry
Sustainability Performance Report and
the Industry Guidance to BES 6001.
(a) Policy, metrics
“Ready-mixed concrete is the
leading product sector within the
concrete industry in delivering
responsibly sourced products. In
2011 almost 96% of its products
were certified to BES 6001.
Significant progress has also been
made by the precast sector in
increasing the amount of BES 6001
certified products from 67% to just
over 78% between 2010 and 2011.”

Certification
Chain of Custody certification from
forest to end-user ensures that FSC
materials and products have been
checked at every stage of processing so
that customers purchasing FSC labelled
products can be confident that they are
genuinely FSC certified

schemes for construction - Specification
Market: (procurers, specifiers, contractors, etc.) Influences the sector certification scheme
Mandatory relationship Desirable relationship
Sector Scheme council (4.2): develops and runs scheme in conformity with BS 8902 in consultation with its stakeholders (4.4); and oversees certification (4.3)
Accreditation body: (Internationally recognized: UKAS or equivalent) can accredit certification schemes against BS 8902, and certification bodies in implementing sector scheme schedule.
Organisation supplying construction products: applies to scheme for certification of its products as being responsibly sourced. Possible types of organization include: primary product suppliers, constituent material suppliers, product processors and finished product suppliers.
Certification body (4.3): run in compliance with BS EN 45011 to certify applicants organizations’ products against the schedule (4.8)

Issues considered relevant to the
sector
For each issue the sector scheme council, with stakeholders, shall
establish certification schedules(s) with minimum criteria
BS 8902 Relevant sustainability issue identification and reporting
1. For the concrete sector, it provides a simple communication
tool which enables recognition of compliance with UK planning
and legislative requirements.
2. Although only a small percentage of the concrete market
requires suppliers to be responsibly sourced, no supplier wants
to be considered ineligible for any work.
3. BES 6001 is quite practical. It would be difficult not to satisfy
responsible source requirements, where certification normally
carried out by current QMS/EMS assessors. There is little take
up for alternate schemes to BS 8902
4. Initial resistance to BES 6001 ratings, i.e. Excellent, Very
Good… but it works for the companies who only manage a Pass
